Introducing the Fallout Network's Lore FAQ

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 06:22 AM PDT

As frequents of r/falloutlore may know, many repeat questions get asked here. So, the mod team has put in some time to create a list to help of hand written answers to these questions, along with references to posts on the subject for further reading.

    Fallout Network's Lore FAQ

This list isn't intended to answer every question ever asked on the sub, just the most common. r/falloutlore strives to foster discussion, and the last thing we would want to do is shut that down. Additionally, if you think something on the list should be updated or added, please message the mod team here.

Special thanks to the users who suggested topics for the list and u/UpgradeTech, whose excellent comment about the music timeline of the Fallout world was better than anything I could have came up with.

Reexamining Colonel Autumn and The Enclave by extension with an often missed line of dialogue

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 04:30 PM PDT

We know that President Eden's plan was to eradicate all irradiated life. Thats evil ofcourse, and we all know that. However we also know that this plan is a source of great friction between the Eden and Autumn, the President says as much and we also know that things must have reached a critical mass so to speak for Autumn to outright betray Eden/Disobey him by attempting to have the Lone Wanderer killed after Eden orders their release.

We also know that when it comes to brass tacks, the Humans of the Enclave choose to follow Autumn, not Eden who is their supreme commander (and whose true identity is a secret)

You may be wondering what this has to due with the title and we'll get there in a moment.

We know that Autumn's plan was to utilize the Purifier and the free water to leverage the various settlements into submitting to Enclave authority. He says as much IIRC during the final confrontation at Project Purity. What changes this plan from simple desire for power to something more altruistic is a line of dialogue I dont think I've ever seen mentioned in discussions like this. The conversation goes like this:

LW: "Why do you need the purifier code anyway?"

Autumn: "You know why. We cant start the Purifier without it. The longer the purifier isnt running, the more people suffer."

Why would he say this? The Enclave isnt suffering, Raven Rock is a self sustaining facility. He can only be referring to the Wasteland in general, but more than that, theres something in there that you only notice if you're really paying attention. Something that breaks with every previous depiction of The Enclave. Did you catch it? He calls the Wastelanders PEOPLE. He acknowledges them as human or at the very least as not being mutants. Thats a gigantic 180 from The Enclave of FO2 and if Autumn believes this, its not a leap to think many others do as well. Further evidence is that he never refers to non Enclave personal as subhuman, even when he shoots the LW if they provide the code, there are no platitudes about genetic superiority just that they dont need you anymore.

None of the generic Enclave NPCs spout such things either.

Using the above, and what we do know about Autumn's goals I think its safe to extrapolate his plan was to use the Purifier to get the Weasteland to submit to a central government in exchange for free water and protection by the Enclave, whereby they could begin rebuilding some sort of civilized society.

Taking all this into account, I believe Autumn was likely the head of a more tolerant faction that could have reformed the enclave and that his faction are firmly in the category of Anti-Villain (That is, Characters with noble, well intentioned goals who use questionable methods to achieve them) as opposed to just villain

Editing on my PC since this was posted via mobile and my phone was dying:

Autumn has no real reason to lie to you at any stage of this either, he could just threaten to kill you if you dont tell him what he wants, but instead he appeals to the idea that helping The Enclave (who he refers to as The Good Guys) helps the Wasteland. Given all this, I think long term the Wasteland would have been better served by Autumns Enclave winning out over both Eden and The LW/BoS.

Fallout 4's overall theme: Is it about Love or is it about Paranoia and Fear?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 05:33 AM PDT

I felt that Fallout 4's theme seemed to boil down to the dangers of Paranoia, prejudice, fear of "The Other" and maybe some elements of McCarthyism in there as well.

Anyone remember this Twilight Zone ending narration?

"The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices...to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill...and suspicion can destroy...and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own—for the children and the children yet unborn. And the pity of it is that these things cannot be confined to the Twilight Zone."

This really does seem to be something that runs through Fallout 4, even if it came off a bit muddled. The fears of who is and isn't a Synth turning brother against brother, the fears people have of the Institute and the prejudices the Institute have of the surface, how paranoia and being unable to trust one another partially led the Minutemen to their first demise. The prejudices that drove the Ghouls from Diamond City. The way Maxson so quickly turns on Danse.

And really, that IS a good theme isn't it? That even after a Nuclear War that led to the destruction of the old world people just can't seem to let go of things like prejudice and paranoia, they just transfer it from one form to another. Now it's not over differences in appearance or nations, it's over who is human.

War isn't the only thing that never seems to change in Fallout. It's like a never-ending cycle of self-destructive attitudes.

What I'm wondering is why this doesn't seem to be brought up more, was this as well executed a theme as it could have been? Could there have been other ways of addressing this?

Am I reading into this too much? Am I seeing something that isn't there? Is the theme of Fallout 4 really supposed to be something more along the lines of "What a parent would do for their child" and this is something unintentional?

Why do some of the outfits in Fo4 have wristwatches?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 07:07 AM PDT

I've noticed over the years that a couple of the outfits from Fallout 4 (like the Cage armor and Drifter outfit)) seem to have wristwatches on the gloves, complete with hilariously oversized straps. Being a watch guy myself I don't understand having one in the wasteland; I would expect a good majority of them being damaged beyond repair or otherwise needing a service, which would require a skilled watchmaker (who are already hard enough to find in real life, let alone in a post apocalyptic wasteland) and/or some sort of battery that you couldn't reliably find out in the Wastes. Even if it did work you'd probably get attacked by raiders or scavengers who are looking to melt your timepiece down for whatever scrap metal they can get out of it.

How rich are the richest people in the known fallout world

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 12:59 AM PDT

People like Mr House for example. How much could he have made in the few years he's been awake and in control of Vegas. Or maybe some of the big bosses of games past like Gizmo or John bishop and the other families of New Reno. Millionaires? Pimp boy 3 Billionaires??? TRILLIONAIRES????????? Is Mayor mcdonough secretly a quadrillionaire which is why he's always so "busy" joking aside, it would be interesting to also know how people keep track or safe of their caps and NCR money. Do banks exist yet? Or do people just stuff their caps and money in a mattress. If so I'd hate to sleep on the mattress of someone keeping thousands of caps in their bed sheesh talk about lumpy, sharp and possibly sticky

Is the entirety of the NCR Military during New Vegas in general weak or just overstretched?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 01:13 AM PDT

I may have missed some essential dialogue during my return to NV but is the NCR Military in its entirety from the Mojave to its home states, comprised of conscripts and ill-equipped men? Or is it just the Mojave Front that is beset by these issues?

What’s the difference between the glowing sea and other hit zones?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 05:15 AM PDT

In other games, when we can see where nukes actually touched down, it's never nearly as, wastelandy as the glowing sea
