Do common wastelanders know what caused the Great War?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 09:37 AM PST

Like would they know that China and the United States went to war before and such?

I'm curious if the average wastelanders know that some country across the ocean dropped the bombs on us 200 years ago. Do they even know why the bombs were dropped?

How should the minutemen/ncr equip themselves to best fight against power armored forces like the east coast brotherhood that utilize both semi-auto laser tech and full auto assault weapons?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 08:58 AM PST

Recently I have been reading up on on the role and defensive capabilities of power armor as well as the offensive capabilities of the laser musket. From what I understand power armor is highly resistant to ammunition like 5.56 x 45 and anything that produces around 2500 joules or less. As well as being highly resistant to laser weaponry. I also gather that power armor was such a game changer mainly due to it enhancing the abilities of its wearer and allowing the one man use of crew sized weapons. I got that info from the following thread:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/falloutlore/comments/dcxr26/power_armor_direct_missile_impacts_chewing/

I know very little about military equipment or how a rifle effects it's ammunition's penetration power but if I'm understanding this correctly that would mean that power armor (T-51B specifically) would be invaluable against the 7.62 X 39 ammunition the Chinese assault rifles would actually have used (if based on the ak-47) as well as being highly resistant to the 5.56 x 45 mm service rifles of the ncr and the laser based muskets of the minutemen.

    I found one interesting source here though;

Honestly? I can't wait to see if one of those helmets can stop a hollow-point round at 100 yards. I'm thinking... not.
Knight Dusk of Lyons Pride - on the enclave power armor

Knight Dusk uses a .308 sniper rifle, which supports the thread I posted above which also mentions that .308 or 7.62 x 51 Nato is well beyond what power armor can defend against reliably.

Though this line doesn't exactly confirm that .308 hollow point can punch through power armor it still seems worth mentioning.

We also see in the DC enclave conflict brotherhood members are armed with; Assault rifles .308 sniper rifles Laser rifles Missile launchers Fat man launchers And miniguns

Later in the conflict they also adopt the use of plasma rifles. Further when liberty prime is brought out there are snipers posted outside the citadel firing at the enclave. This likely means plasma is effective against power armor, and again provides more proof of .308's effectiveness.

Another in Lyons Pride - I think Knight Irving Gallows mentions that the Enclave often die in higher numbers than the brotherhood. This is important because it shows us that despite power armors resistance to laser weaponry the brotherhood could still contend in a firefight.

Briefly I'd like to mention that it's been said on this sub that the laser musket is a very powerful rifle which boasts both infinite ammo and a shot that gets more powerful per crank which should let it outdamage a laser rifle per shot but obviously be fired less quickly.

With all of this in mind how do you think the modern minuteman army(or ncr army I guess) should be equipped? Assuming they expect conflict with power armored forces like the brotherhood, full auto using forces like the gunners, and robotic foes like the institute?

It seems to me that laser muskets should stay in the minutemen's arsenal since it is incredibly useful against most wasteland creatures. But considering the minutemen will also be facing raiders, gunners, and brotherhood who will have superior suppression capabilities due to utilizing fully automatic weaponry and considering that power armor is resistant to laser tech - what weapons should the minutemen adopt to fix these weaknesses.

My first thought would be that if they have access to manufacturing new fire arms - which I believe the sole survivor can provide - is that they should begin producing M-14's and .308 (or 7.62) hollow point rounds. If the ncr can produce service rifles I think this should be possible for the minutemen. Assuming m-14's exist in this universe if not they could go with the M1 Garand mabye? Putting some soldiers in each squad with these might be a nice counter to power armored troops, if the minutemen can greatly outnumber the brotherhood or enclave which I think they could similiar to the ncr.

Lastly they should adopt some form of fully automatic weapon for dealing with your typical raider/gunner. For this I was thinking they could perhaps adopt the cheaply made institute laser rifle/laser pistol and produce them as full auto's. This way they get all of the advantages of laser and full auto weaponry minus a bit of the punch, and they can still afford it. Besides that I'm not sure what could fill this role besides full auto combat rifles or assault rifles(though I prefer thinking of bostons version as .50 cal machine guns).

A quick Google of squad sizes says the army used squads of 6-10 soldiers I think this sort of equipment variety might be achievable considering that. I have no idea if equipping soldiers like this is actually viable though so I'd love to know from you more knowledable people. I assume there is a good reason almost every member of an ncr squad uses the service rifle, as opposed to the equipment variety I've described. But I don't think it's uncommon to have one or two soldiers carrying different loadouts in a U.S. army squad than the typical M4?

And I also wanted to mention that if the point of power armor is to carry large weapons, aren't the brotherhood misusing it? Most of their troops carry small laser rifles. Though I could see it being used for it's superior damage resistance to combat armor if they can afford it.

Also considering the sole survivor's manufacturing abilities how likely is it that we could see t-45d power armored units and servomech scrap bots in minutemen units? Would the minutemen primarily use combat armor?

    Thanks for y'all's time.

Edit: Forgot to mention minutemen seem to utilize gauss rifles to some extent as well. Mabye switch veteran or elite members utilizing them since you can get one from Ronnie Shaw. I'd imagine these would be a strong counter to power armor if able to be reliably supplied.

What happened to the universities in Los Angeles CA?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 07:12 PM PST

There was an experimental vault under the cathedral but I had hot heard much about the public transportation system or the universities there. What happened to USC and UCLA as those two are major research centers?

What is the cheapest, most bare bones vault/shelter which succeed in protecting its inhabitants?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 12:33 AM PST

There's a couple homemade shelters that look like they worked and of course some folks survived in caves.

    How old is Mama Murphy?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 11:17 PM PST

She seems to be old enough to be infirm, but not cripplingly old. I can't find anything on the wiki about it. Might be about 60 or so, but does anyone have anything solid?

What happened in the weeks and months following the bombs?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 08:29 PM PST

They should really make a game where the player doesn't get into a vault and gets to see everything that happened after the bombs fell.

Confusion about Joshua Graham's "Gun that one the west" remark, and the origin of the model 1911 in the fallout universe

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 04:17 PM PST

So according to follows-chalk, Joshua graham insists on adorning the dead horses war clubs with .45 (ACP) shell casings because in his words, they are "from the gun that won the west". this confused me for a few reasons. If he was referring to the gun that won the west in our world, it'd be .45 Colt and not .45 acp, The Colt model P rather than the 1911 as they're talking about. When Joshua refers to the west, what exactly is he referring to?

Also second observation, Joshua states that the .45 automatic pistol, which is clearly a 1911, was designed by one of his tribe centuries ago. Is he referring to a mormon? A new Cannonite? John Browning? (the actual designer of the pistol.)

These statements resonated with more for some reason.

    The Frontier and vertibirds.

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 12:38 AM PST

Kimball having the only working vertibird is a big flex. In the frontier there's so many! So how the hell did these guys take so mamy resources with them without the Ncr knowing? From what I remember they're no longer part of them so no way they were "allowed" to take so much.

    Dean Domino: Mr. Yesterday

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 02:08 PM PST

So, I suppose this post toes the line of the "speculation" rule, but I would argue there's plenty of evidence and it simply hasn't been stated in a wiki. But I posted similarly before in a different sub and think a lore-specific sub may have better perspective.

I refer to Dean Domino of the Dead Money dlc. And I believe the intention of the writers was that Dean is the shady "Mr. Yesterday" from the various terminal entries around the Villa. Dean was scamming Sinclair, but speaks in the Cantina about how he was going to show him "some things you don't get back up from", which suggests an insurmountable ruining of his life. It fits the character completely that Domino would also be sabotaging the Villa, since a simple heist of what's in the vault would leave him with a decadent resort and casino with which he could recoup his money.

Dean also knows a LOT about the Villa, things that don't make much sense for a singer, even one who's been living in the Villa. How does he know about the issues with power distribution, for example?

Then, there's the fact that they're not mentioned in the same terminal entries. Out of all the entries mentioning Mr. Yesterday, none use any other name, and it's pretty obvious that he's not on payroll as Mr. Yesterday. It even talks about him meeting with the foreman, so it couldn't be him, but would have to be someone who has access to the Villa before it's open to the public. And Dean Domino's big song that he's known for is "I Saw Her Yesterday". Also, as another user has pointed out to me, they're the only two in the dlc who use the term "ace in the hole"

I had to see if anyone else had come up with this, or heard any reference to it from the dev team, because there's basically nothing I find referencing it, but it seems obvious to me every time I play Dead Money.

Do suitcase nukes exist and can you use a mini-nuke and or one of Liberty Prime's without a launching system? Is that the same used by the suicide mutants?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 08:18 AM PST

I'm wondering if those smaller nukes are pre-armed or something.

Like if you made it to the Glowing Sea and that underground stash, could you just toss one at the wall and the whole place would go up or do they need to be activated first? Could you throw two mininukes together and have them both go off? Can you shoot one (assuming VATS is correctly showing how that works)?

How come there aren't more repaired cars in the wasteland?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 08:09 AM PST

Why is the car in FO2 the only case in the fallout universe of a car being repaired that we hear about? Given that people in the wasteland have repaired almost everything else, you'd think that there would be more than a few examples of running cars.
