Fallout | The life of a raider

    The life of a raider

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 08:54 PM PDT

You are born in an apocalyptic hell-scape, your friends and family are addicted addicted to Jet, and all you ever witness is violence. You were orphaned at an early age, your parents killed by supermutants. Danger lurks around every corner, you live your life in a constant state of apprehension. You look at the people in Diamond City with envious eyes, you will never get what they have. The lights are a visible reminder that you have nothing, and will never be nothing. All you can do is survive another day, humans are like any other cornered animal, afraid and will do whatever it takes to survive.

You are able to afford a little security with your raider family and friends, they will watch your back, and protect you. When food gets low, you will rob and steal. When chems get low, you will injure or kill. You are doing what humans at their most basic instinct do, survive.

Then some asshole in power armor comes along, the weapons and armor he has is worth more caps than you will ever see in a life time. You talk it over with your people and decide that if you can take this person down, you can all move to the big city, and finally be safe. You grab your pipe pistol that you trust with your life and ready the ambush. Everyone opens fire, the person in the power armor walks over the landmines, which shake the world in violence. Yet this person doesn't even seem phased. He takes out some weird contraption, but even you know a mini nuke when you see one. In less than a second, your entire family is dead, melted into the asphalt. You were far enough away to not be killed instantly, but you are nearly dead. You see this person in power armor slowly walk up to your dead family, and take what little possessions they had in life. That instinct to keep on living has never left you, surrender is the only choice. He pulls out a pistol and pulls the trigger. While on the ground inches, from death, you see a supermutant run up next to the person in the power armor. With darkness closing in on you, the last thing you hear is "Strong getting hungry. Want someone to eat."

I just properly finished Fallout 3 for the first time. It's way better than I ever expected.

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 03:06 PM PDT

I got Fallout 3 for free when I bought Fallout 4 at launch. As such, my only experience with Fallout 3 was a brief playthrough when I was 14, where I didn't even find Dogmeat or visit Tenpenny Tower, I basically sprinted to the purifier and finished within 8 hours and went back for my 3rd playthrough of FO4. As such, I've always firmly believed that 3 was the weakest Fallout (76 excluded) and have always believed New Vegas is superior to 3 and 4.

A few weeks ago, with nothing to play I thought I'd give it another go and experience it properly. I did every single quest I could and took the story slowly. By the 8 hour mark I had barely scratched the surface of the game. I turned on the purifier after 35 hours, but realised I had to see the real ending. Reluctantly, I payed the £3.39 and started Broken Steel. Another 10 hours later I watched the Enclave Command Centre blow up from the roof of Adams Air Force Base. After that, I went back to Megaton, put all of my weapons and armour in a locker and put my 101 jumpsuit back on. I then walked the entire distance back to the Jefferson Memorial, looked at the statue and saved the game for the last time, coincidentally on save file 101.

I was completely wrong about this game, it's not the same game as New Vegas and the two shouldn't be compared so much, 3 is perfect in its own right. There was way more player choice than I remember, and it's certainly not a fully linear game like I've seen people claim. I felt like my actions actually mattered and in the end I didn't even care that there wasn't multiple faction endings. I would have preferred a closing slideshow like New Vegas, but 3's ending is perfect for the story. After all, you're not an unaffiliated drifter, you're a character with a set backstory and a solid goal, a more extensive faction system isn't really required. Honestly, I think this sub gives it an unnecessary amount of criticism, and we should appreciate it for far more.

In a year or so I'll go for another playthrough, as an evil character this time and play the other DLCs, and I know I'm going to enjoy it even more.

I'll never forgive Bethesda for F76 for very personal reasons

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 12:14 AM PDT

I'm a West Virginian. When I heard a fallout game was being set in WV, I was ecstatic. I watched the trailer over and over. I honestly prefer the 76 version of Country Roads over the original (but nothing will ever beat the Johnny Cash version).

It is a perfect setting for a Fallout, especially with its political history. WV has always been frought with class struggle and warfare. Some of the most violent Labor v Pinkerton firefights happened in WV. Miners bombed railroads to fuck up the infrastructure their abusive bosses were using against them. Hell, the pepperoni roll, the iconic WV food item, was invented by a miner's wife to be a nutrient dense, slow to spoil food that could be quickly wolfed down while working so the miners wouldn't be reprimanded for taking too long to eat. And let's not forget WV came into being when it seceded from the secession. So anti-confederate it left Virginia just to rejoin the Union.

And how do they portray this area? Do they have a faction of proud laborers who survived in the mines, passing down distrust of the powerful? Do they have a story about Vault Tec astroturfing support in the face of local protests of vaults being shady? Do they have stories of the poorer areas being used to build the vaults but then not having vaults built in their neighborhoods?

Nah its fuckin zombies and dragons for basic enemies, and factions that shouldn't even exist yet for the real plot.

My ass is still chapped over this years later.

The only reason that keep me from playing New Vegas over and over again

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 04:32 AM PDT

Roleplay? Guest? Amazing story? Obsidian good, Bethesda bad? - Nope

I came back just for the amazing western cowboy vibe and to use Cowboy weapons, revolvers, level-action, caravan shotgun. Only in New Vegas that i can feel this great gunslinger fast hand cowboy Western feeling.

Nothing feel better than pumping an entire tub of 45-70 into those Legion scum or a .44 bullet right in the noggin

Medicine Stick with Hollowpoint just rekt every thing, even Deathclaw.

The combo of Graham Armour with a cowboy hat scream modern day Texas Ranger, tacticool body armour but still using the six shooter, YEEHAW

I love the power armour in Fallout 4 so much!

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 01:35 AM PDT

I am so glad that they decided to revamp it from the last games. Sure, the fact that you can't interact with workbenches or wait in Power Armour is a little annoying, but there is no better feeling than walking around in upgraded Power Armour with a Jetpack.

Not to mention how cool it feels to put it on. It feels like you just became the deadliest creature in the wasteland every time you get inside. It feels weighty, and it looks like actual heavy armour, not some anorexic metal armour with a weird helmet from the last games.

The Jetpack itself is an addition that I can't believe I survived without in the last 2 games haha. It's such a useful tool, it feels broken

In the fallout universe is it just America that is apocalyptic or is it other countries as well. Will there ever be a fallout game set outside America

    So I tried Fallout 76

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 03:16 AM PDT

So far I really am having fun, sure it has some bugs but overall it is what really should have been at the beginning. Im glad they didn't abandon the game.

Do the FO76 player characters have any title like the rest of the FO protagonists?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 12:28 AM PDT

I mean, FONV had "The Courier/Courier 6", FO3 had "The Lone Wanderer", FO4 had "The Sole Survivor" and so on and so on. So what about the FO76 "protagonists"?

I always just called them "The Reclaimers" but i never thought it was a good title. Any ideas?

Which Map of fallout do you know like the back of your hand?

Why would people even eat Deathclaw meat?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 12:49 AM PDT

In reality, their meat would most likely taste awful due their diet consisting of raw, mutated animal flesh\human meat and ect.

What would Appalachia/West Virginia be like in the present day of fallout?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 12:42 AM PDT

Saying that FO76 takes place 59 years before the first fallout and 185 before the most recent fallout, it's safe to say the region has gone through some changes.

I'd assume it would be in a very post-post-apocalyptic position, more so than most of the USA at least. I assume this because of how much the message of "rebuilding America" and what not is pushed on us in the game, plus the fact that WV is in a fantastic state in comparison to most other locations saying that it wasn't hit by any (if not many) nukes. So it's safe to say that besides the occasional rad related creature and maybe a few heavy radiation pocket zones that wont be able to be visited for another 800 years, the place is probably almost back to prewar condition.

then again, this implies most of the player base for the fallout franchise is smart enough to be able to remake a whole society from almost scratch, so eh.

Does anyone else want throwing weapons to come back in the next fallout. I really like throwing weapons in NV they added a lot today playstlyes especially stealth. Throwing a tomahawk into an enemy's skull made me feel like a waste land ninja.

Kat and Gus random encounter could be a refference

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 04:31 AM PDT

So I thought about it when i encountered it, and haven't seen an answer or opinion about it before the little girl(Kat) and her robot(Gus). Well if you kknda look at it, couldn't it be quite a clear Bioshock refference. I mean it would make kinda sense but also we don't have any real backstory/lore on Kat and Gus. So what do you think?

I have New Vegas and Fallout 4 and intend to play both but don't know which one to play first.

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 12:20 PM PDT

I own both and fully intend to play both but I am really unsure about which one to start with. I have heard a lot of praise for New Vegas and hear that it is the best a lot. Fallout 4 seems a little more polished and expansive but I could be wrong. Just asking for votes and observations about what to expect kind of thing.

EDIT: Also just realized I have all the DLC for New Vegas as well... neat.
