Old World Blues and the whole story behind the Think Tank is so brilliantly done. I'm kind of obsessed with it.

    Posted:

Old World Blues has changed the way I look at New Vegas and the rest of the series as a whole. I'd been enjoying the game, but Old World Blues, combined with how it links to Dead Money especially, really took it to another level for me. The more I think about it the more I love it.

It's so cool how the Think Tank are directly and indirectly responsible for so many things in the game, and even potentially other things in the series. I mean think about it, there's so much weird shit in Fallout, so who's to say the Think Tank aren't responsible for some of it given their track record. There's the bigger things like all the crap they did for the Sierra Madre and then there's the smaller stuff like being responsible for cazadores and nightstalkers. I just find it funny how I found those two creatures, in particular, to be the most irritating enemies in the game long before I knew where they came from and it turns out they came from the same guy.

It's interesting to see them as a sort of foil to the Institute too. The Think Tank have more resources and they're arguably more intelligent, but they were held back by their own insanity. Obviously, I'm not on board with the Institute or their ideas either, but they were focused on benefitting mankind (even if their methods were questionable ), whereas the Think Tank just do whatever the hell they want, for seemingly no reason at all. If not for Mobius then the Mojave and possibly even the rest of the wasteland would have been completely doomed and this is pretty much a fact if you consider the scrapped ending of them escaping Big MT as canon. The fact that Ulysses recognised this too and feared them because of it is a great detail I found. It's just so crazy that everyone in-game is so focused on the other factions and what they could mean for the wasteland, when behind the scenes one of the most dangerous factions ever is being held back by ONE person. Not only that but that one person is completely insane himself. It makes you wonder how many other factions/people are out there, hidden, with the potential to destroy everything.

The members themselves are also really interesting. They're all terrible people and there's absolutely no disputing that, it almost makes you wonder what the world would have been like had they been benevolent. I'm reluctant to call them evil though, in the state that you meet them in anyway, because it's like they can't even comprehend the concept of morality anymore. Maybe they never could. I don't see their actions as intentionally malicious, which makes them so much more interesting as characters and as 'villains'. They do all that they do with this detachedness and lack of purpose, which arguably makes them scarier. They have emotions of course but it doesn't matter anymore as they're so caught up in their own egos and obsessions that they never stop and question what they're doing anyway. I like how it's implied that they were always like this and that the time they spent as brains in jars, combined with the constant looping and memory loss only intensified it. The looping and isolation effectively squeezed out almost all of what remained of their humanity and left them husks of who they were, with only the most dominant parts of their personalities left. That's such a cool concept to me. As these husks they're more dangerous (due to their insanity and complete lack of humanity), but it's also what's keeping them contained.

And then there's Mobius. I really love him as a character, personality-wise and how he plays into the overall story. Of course, he's arguably a bad person too, or was as he was still part of the Think Tank after all, but he's the only one who ever redeemed himself in any way. I mentioned how he was the only thing keeping the other think tanks from completely wreaking havoc on the wasteland which is such a terrifying thought. It's not like he's some really capable and moral person or anything (not anymore). He just had more empathy than the rest of them. When he realises that the Think Tank know about the outside world and know how to get out, he's just like "Oh well at least I tried." Even though he's the only one with any sense of morality, even he's fallen victim to his own mental deterioration and views everything through this same detached lens now. I like the implication that he still cares for his friends and that he feels bad about what he had to do despite all that they've done, it's oddly sweet despite how messed up the entire situation is. Oh, and the loop names were a great touch.

And I've not even touched on the humour, which was such a breath of fresh air, especially after playing through Dead Money. Finding little hints of what Christine, Elijah and Ulysses were up to there was really fun too. So yeah, I love the characters, the themes, the story, the humour, the voice acting, and the way it works into the other DLCs and the game as a whole. It's by far my favourite DLC (followed by Dead Money) and it's probably the only one I'll replay if I ever do another playthrough of New Vegas.

God how I wish the Museum of Witchcraft was longer

    Posted:

Like this mission for a dude who started fallout games with fo4 made deathclaws scary for me. Sadly, it's super short but when you're in the museum, see a body fall down, hear the noises from the deathclaw and all that makes me go "oh fuck" every single time.

Even the holotapes give it such an ominous feel. And then you stand near the eggs and you go "oh fuck" again since these mercenaries messed with a deathclaw's babies which is like the worst idea in the history of bad ideas

A line from the merc holotapes really sticks with me as a just the biggest "oh shit" moment.

"Oh hey momma, you looking for this" IT'S SO GOOD. God how I wish that the holotape included a roar at the end or maybe a deathscream or something. It's probably one of my favorite sidequests in fo4 and was definitely a well needed "yeah dude, deathclaws are scary as fuck" reminder.

What food should I pack for a Fallout-themed camping trip?

    Posted:

There will be smores, of course, but I think it would be awesome to include some Fallout foods! Coke in glass bottles for Nuka-Cola, Spam for Cram, and Pork n' Beans; carrots, jalapeños, and potatoes are all easy enough, but I'd love to hear your ideas on how to complete the experience. For Salisbury Steak, for example, there are frozen TV dinners but I feel like the spirit of the thing is to pick the box up out of the dirt and eat it room-temperature. Ideally, without suffering food poisoning.

Here's the list of foods found in Fallout. Meat-wise, I could grill steaks and call it brahmin. Chicken on a skewer is probably a decent stand-in for iguana-on-a-stick or squirrel-on-a-stick, but if any of you out there have actually had barbecued iguana and can suggest a better fit, I'm open to alternatives. To stand in for the various bug parts, maybe jerky or shelf-stable salami like pepperoni?

I have a cooler and access to a camp stove, though sadly no cinder blocks to sit on while stirring a pot of brown sludge (I need two more screws to build one).

    Thanks!

35 Hours in New Vegas, and haven't even been in the main strip yet.

    Posted:

So it's a bit of a cheat, as I did all of the DLC first. But holy, I bought the complete game dirt cheap on a steam sale and it's just as good as I remember.

The writing is quick, snappy and funny. The shooting is much better then I remember and I can't get over the weapon variety.

Exploring in advance and then meeting NPCs and having already completed their quests is really neat.

Such a gem, really looking forward to putting more hours in it.

If there is ever a game to take your time with, this is the one.

Is fallout 1 and 2 worth a try?

    Posted:

I've been playing fallout 3, 4 and new vegas for almost a year now and I'm starting to get a little tired off them.

I've been wanting to check out the two original ones for quite some time now but I still have my doubts.

So I have some questions about them:

    -Are they still enjoyable?

    -Have the gameplay aged well?

-Do they work well with windows 10?

-And are they difficult to play?

(I have not played any traditional RPGs so that's why I'm asking)

Ps sorry if this has already been asked

Has Fallout 4 aged well? Never played it but might try it out. I don’t want it to feel underwhelming compared to more current games tho

Really conflicted with the story in Fallout 4

    Posted:

My character is very much pro-freedom and therefore disagrees strongly with the Institute, but I just found out that
your son is the leader of the Institute
, so now I'm working as some kind of double agent for the Railroad and Institute and trying to balance them, but that's only sustainable for so long.

I haven't felt a dilemma like this in a game in a long tame.

    Question about a random event(?)

    Posted:

I am not very far into the Fallout 4 main questline, my last mission being the one where you kill the synth Courser for reference (I've been captivated by building up my settlement). I was by the main bridge into the Sanctuary and I saw a super mutant at the Red Rocket Truck Stop. Not wanting him to attack the Sanctuary I dispersed of him. I then realized I could see the Brotherhood of Steel airship quite a ways in the distance. I scoped in at it with my sniper rifle and almost immediately I could hear and the see a vertibird heading towards the Sanctuary. I quickly sprinted home thinking it was an incoming attack. The vertibird then stopped across the lake from the sanctuary by the dock and dropped off a group of people. Two in power armor, one normal person, and one solider with a minigun. I was wondering why this happened or if I triggered it somehow, or if this is just a random event. Thanks in advance!

Edit: forgot to mention that once they were dropped off they headed over the hill in the direction of Concord and I was unable to chase them down or locate them.

Edit 2: I have the event clipped if anyone has extreme interest in it

Joseph Anderson and "Exploring, Combat, Gathering"

    Posted:

I recently watched his "Fallout 4 - One year later" video and one of his main criticisms was the cycle "exploring, combat, gathering". That "cycle" gets swung a lot, as if Fallout 4 is only "that".

Am I the only one who thinks that basically any RPG can be reduced to this cycle (with varying focuses):

    • Skyrim - you have to explore in order to find merchants, quests and so on. You have to do combat, in order to continue exploring / finish quests. You instinctively loot stuff, in order to improve your standing in the world.
    • New Vegas - same. You have a breadcrumb-trail, searching for Benny. You do a lot of exploring and combat in the meantime...and loot Geckos, Mantises, whatever, in order to craft / sell things.
    • Fallout 3, Oblivion, Morrowind, Witcher 3, Outer Worlds, Pokemon, Minecraft...

EDIT: My point here is, that the criticism of the "loop" is a little bit overexaggerated and used against FO4, as if that was a bad thing. FO4 does some aspects really good and some not so good, but to reduce it, or any RPG, to just "explore, fight, loot" is a little bit unfair.

Just had an idea, we know the Institute has made human gorilla and bird synths so why not make a synth of one of toughest the wasteland has to offer. synth Deathclaws

What if the game starts you in a no win scenario in a vault as overseer. When the vault inevitably fails then you leave to live out in the wasteland.

Fallout 3 - Mod that doesn't reload weapons upon switching?

    Posted:

I'm not sure if a mod like this would even be possible or whether it's "hard-stuck" into the game, but I'm wondering if there's a mod that allows guns to keep their current ammunition upon switching instead of automatically reloading them?

It's a bit trivial, but I figured this was the place to ask.

In lore, how deadly is the Glowing Sea, truly? Obviously it isn’t that bad compared to Vault 87, but I mean, well, exclusively lore wise.

    Posted:

Also, are there any mods that make the glowing sea more deadly? As in, higher radiation that's only negated by power armor/hazmat.

The game somehow saved even though I deleted the data. (fallout 1)

    Posted:

I bought fallout on steam and started the game. I got the water chip, gave it to the vault. Then I started the quest where Tandi gets kidnapped. I didn't finish the quest and I deleted the game. When I installed it back I didn't had the files back, so I started it from the start. No big deal, I wasn't so far anyways. When I was at Shady sands the lady at the entrance was talking about that Tandi was kidnapped. This couldn't be possible. Probably some buck that didn't bother me. So I got to the Hub in my first run I killed the guards. Now in my second run some guardians were missing and some of them just started from nowhere to attack me. Can someone say to me how to fix that? So I can play a normal run.

Get materials back from scrapping player-built things

    Posted:

Fallout 4. So it I place a switch, it costs me various materials including copper. When I scrap back said switch (maybe because I want to replace it with a different one) I only get steel back. This is particularly annoying because sometimes I need to try some things out and/replace them.

Same with wires. They cost copper to make, but I don't get it back when I remove the wire.

Is there any mod that can change this do that you get the full construction materials back?

    Alien blaster or YCS/186

    Posted:

which one of these do you prefer in a nutshell these weapons are counterparts they are found in the north of horowitz farmsted if you have the wild wastland trait what seems like a mercenary camp is actualy a spaceship and the alien captain has the alien blaster and the only ammo for it in the game,if you dont have the wildwasteland trait then the mercenary camp is a mercenary camp filled with vipers and one of them has the YCS/186,Alien blaster has lower damage and there is a very few of its ammo but has a better DPS and YCS/186 has higher damage its ammo is MFC is easly found has a scope and uses less ammo then its "normal" verision Gauss rifle but has a lower DPS and you use 4 MFC per shot(soo uses more ammo then Alien blaster),soo which one of these you prefer, I prefer YCS/186
