    Title.

It is seriously annoying to have several posts asking the same exact thing.

Either use the search function, or just play the damn game!

A big thank you to all the players in 76 who sell their ammo for reasonable/cheap prices.

You all saved me a lot of time and caps from scavenging and buying from other vendors. From bullets to even plasma cores were dirt cheap. True heroes of the wasteland.

Game Design Question: Can you ever have a Fallout that juxtaposes what F:NV and F4 did?

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 10:45 PM PDT

Main Question: Can we find a way to merge a strong narrative with radiant quest design?

For starters, this isn't a hate thread: I think each has strengths and flaws in their own way, as each developer had different design philosophies. There lies the major crux of this thread - these different philosophies, arguably, created very different games.

F4: Superb vertical level-design, where a random unmarked door you find while trying to travel to a new location can lead to a vast sprawling hellhole. I have fond memories of finding a random hospital controlled by raiders, progressing through a hallway, and looking down this... gigantic opening in the middle of the room that led to floors descending downward. And as soon as I turned to my immediate left, a raider on the 2nd basement level, looked at me, unholstered his missile launcher, and used his Bloody Mess perk on my poor, enfeebled protagonist.

Modded survival mode allowed me to interact with game mechanics -- like potentially siding with the BoS or Institute simply so I could have a means of fast-travel. Building settlements just so I can eat, sleep, drink water, drop-off loot or repair my Power Armor made the game very endearing. It made every settlement valuable when I setup supply-lines. I viewed them as centralized nodes. Smaller nodes in the form of buildings infested by raiders, synths, ghouls, mutants, etc. were constantly stripped for resources that were carried back to central nodes. Everything became so much more valuable in Survival because I needed to prepare weapons, drugs, and armor to match specific environments.

The downside here is... I felt absolutely no connection to the overarching plot. Left to my own devices it was fun exploring and looting from the first several-or-so apartments. But by the fifteenth building, it eventually makes you feel like your aimlessly exploring a sandbox. A well-crafted sandbox, but a purposeless one.

I felt no connection to the Institute or Shaun. At the end of my Institute playthrough, I felt they were like written by fanfic writers because a lot of their goals never made sense when compared to what they actually did, and a lot of their technological prowess gave me tonal whiplash compared to the rest of the wasteland. They felt like they had infinite resources at all times: entire synthetic humanoids - which are by themselves a huge leap in technology by this juncture - storming buildings, teleportation, one of their scientists literally comes up with the FEV cure in the middle of an irradiated hellhole with limited resources, etc. A lot of these things don't gel with the dystopian wasteland Bethesda tries to sell us, from a writing perspective.

I feel like for as much as I can complain about other factions, the impressions left by the main "bad" guys in the game really, really soured the story and writing for me throughout the entire rest of the game. Thus, I felt like the only fun I really had in F4 was when I was on the Explore > Shoot > Loot cycle.

F:NV: By inverse, you had an impeccable faction-based storyline where all the writing in the game felt very "deliberate". Each faction had flaws and each side-quest addressed these in different ways. The NCR is an expansive, imitation of pre-war neoliberal government. As such, most quests explore how the upper-brass are absolutely corrupt and field checkpoints with barely trained conscripts. You get this sense of impending doom due to militaristic incompetency, something that has a lot of real-world parallel. Side-quests like the ones in McCarren show the price of war and warring with every minor faction in the area as well as the Legion.

Hitherto, the NCR's incompetence makes the Legion's threat even more menacing. Side-quests like finding out what happened to Nipton, learning of the lottery carried out by Vulpes Inculta, gels well with the main quest. Where at a certain point, you even have the opportunity to learn why the Legion are like this. As a side-note, its why its hard to walk a mile in the shoes of your average Gunner in F4. Sure, there's notes left here and there describing who they were... but not once did I get to question their motivations or interact with their leaders in a substantive way like Caesar and his Legion. I felt you could replace them with the Foresworn from Skyrim and nothing would change, nothing is truly omitted by their absence from the game.

A lot of quests explored how these civilizations would actually function in a post-war environment. I truly got the sense that I was helping or harming people struggling to comprehend and adapt to what was left behind after the nukes dropped.

The caveats to F:NV's development philosophy is that while the side-quests and writing bled into the main storyline the world map left a lot to be desired. It's meant to be a wasteland, sure, but I feel given all the cut-content videos being released, Obsidian overstretched their scope when they accepted contract work from Bethesda. Which meant every discarded, generic cave and anthill in the middle of nowhere were horribly bland and forgettable by comparison.

Exploration could be a chore at times when the base-game had a lack of NPC interaction.

TL;DR: To all who are reading, do you think there is a legitimate way to synthesize Obsidian and Bethesda's development philosophies? Or is it strictly impossible given the amount of time and money a company has to invest into a game. That one has to take priority over the other at the end of the day. Alternatively, do you think there are games that have already merged these two philosophies?

I can't play Fallout 4 without the radio

    Posted: 11 Apr 2021 03:18 AM PDT

So recently I've been playing through Fallout 4 and I'm not sure why but part of me felt compelled to listen to the radio about 10 hours into my playthrough. Doing this has meant there hasn't been a time in the other 40 hours of my playthrough where the radio hasn't been on and I'm somewhat happy about that. I've listned to Travis make the same rubbish announcements and same awkward text repeatedly but the music on there makes it so worth it! It's now all sitting on a Spotify playlist I have for Fallout vibes and I listen to it on a regular and when I'm playing the game.

If you haven't listened to the radio whilst playing I highly recommend you try it! I always thought I'd hate it in F3 & FNV (Although listning to Big Iron on the Fallout Radio in good springs opened up my eyes to Marty Robbins and his amazing music) but here in Fallout 4 I can't of a time I wouldn't have the radio on.

If you have any suggestions or critiques, I'd be happy to hear them!

Also, if you would like the poster files, PM me and I'll set you up. They're too THICC for Imgur to handle.

I have never wanted to kill an NPC in any fallout more than Julie in 76

    Posted: 11 Apr 2021 01:00 AM PDT

For those of you who don't know, God bless you, Julie is the radio host for 76 radio. And because Bethesda is incompetent they didn't bother to add a radio station without a radio host other than classical. Now this is where it gets fun, Julie somewhat similar to pre quest Miles in 4 likes to mope and whine at an absurd level.

This is the straw the broke the camel's back, I kid you not she has a 90 second long dialogue that can play between songs where she just annoyingly talks about her feelings for NINETY SECONDS STRAIGHT. Jesus H Christ

And of this has to be in the 1 fallout game where I can't just go to her and permanently kill her, end my suffering

Fallout 4: What do you think is the “canon” build for the main character?

You can look however you want or make whatever build you want. Yah yah yah. We all know that. But there is clearly a character there before we get our hands on him.

So, what do you think his build is?

What happens to nuka world after killing all the raiders?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2021 04:28 AM PDT

I have already done almost all of the quests related to nuka world, restored power and killed off a gang, maxed out porter gages affinity and got his perk, got aeturnus from the rogue knight, gotten the quantum power armor etc. So the only thing really left for me to do in the dlc is to turn on the raiders. If I do that, what happens to the park? Can I still trade with the market and keep gage?

TIL You can't take off your Pipboy. Canonically.

    Posted: 11 Apr 2021 04:17 AM PDT

Of course there's no option to remove your Pip-Boy in any of the Fallout games, so the game won't let you do it. But I never knew that its canon that you can't remove you Pipboy.

Never been rude to the guy who gives you the Pipboy in Fallout 3 and he's the only one who tells you that I know of. You have to tell him you hate the Pipboy and want it off to learn you can't take it off.

What if it breaks? Are you stuck with a broken Pipboy on your arm for the rest of your life? What about back during Pre-War if you wanted to upgrade? I guess that's what you have a second arm for.

    Purple mist wallhack

    Posted: 11 Apr 2021 03:55 AM PDT

I was clearing out some raider base when I discovered I could see some kind of purpley red mist through walls where enemies were, like a wallhack. I don't want this to ruin the game for me and I don't know how to get rid of it. Anyone know what this is? I don't want this to ruin my game experience.

Is it worth saving Benny in New Vegas?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2021 04:53 AM PDT

Hi there! First time playing through Fallout: New Vegas and I'm really enjoying it. So I completed the bunker quest (I helped Mr. House) and Caesar is letting me decide how Benny will die. I kind of want to kill him in the arena as revenge but I can't help but feel that I'll be missing out on something if I kill him. Is it worth saving him?

    Yes-Man's personality better explained.

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 08:14 AM PDT

At first blush, Yes Man's personality seems entirely explained by the fact that he was unlocked by Emily Ortal so that he has to take commands from anybody.

But if you think about it, nothing obliges him to have such a personality, he could be the snarky servile type, AKA Jarvis from the Iron Man/MCU movies, offering his opinion and expressing his displeasure in a sarcastic fashion but still complying with orders.

But Yes Man goes out of his way to not only obey your orders but appear excited about them, even though there are times when its obvious that he disagrees with you. He has his own opinions, he's just not able to voice them, but that shouldn't be an essential feature of unlocking Yes-Man.]

But if you notice, all of Mr House's robots that have specific personalities are perky and agreeable. Yes Man, Vic, and Jane all have this in common. The difference with Vic and Jane is they serve Mr House exclusively so they're a little more assertive when dealing with you. But Vic and Jane have other personality traits because they were specifically programmed by House (or based on brain scans or something).

So the Yes Man is the way he is because all of Mr House's robots are kind of like that. Yes Man is probably House's base stock personality template that he starts with each time he creates a more specific robot personality.

This tells you something about Mr House, he has chosen at least one of these robots for companionship. He's a control freak. He can't trust anybody but robot companions who were specifically programmed never to betray him. And ironically he's undone by a Securitron.

Is there any way to free/kill the Synths during the Battle of Bunker Hill then leave the Institute without the game bugging out?

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 11:24 PM PDT

On PS4 FYI so no console commands.

    TL;DR

If I piss Father off, the Battle of Bunker Hill quest won't finish properly. The settlers in Bunker Hill will be stuck cowering and the bodies won't despawn/go away. Any fix?

So, during the Battle of Bunker Hill, I originally intended to free the Synths. I went through with this and noticed that after killing the courser, a new step in the quest popped up saying "Decide the fate of the synths" or something like that. I didn't pay much attention to it, and went to talk to Father. I pissed him off and that was that.

However, when I got back to Bunker Hill, there was still fighting. What's worse is that after I had massacred everyone, all the Essential Characters were still cowering. I've loaded a previous save several times already before the battle started and tried different ways. The only way that it didn't result in them constantly cowering was siding with the Institute/not getting on Father's bad side.

Is there any way to fix this? I wanted to actually make a story for my character that made sense, but with that bug it makes it extremely annoying, especially since I intended on making Bunker Hill a Main Supplies Distributor to nearby settlements. If I have to, I will simply go to the Institute, kill a synth or two and then leave. It doesn't fit with the story I'm trying to do at all, but it's the only way to stop the bug from happening and cleaning up all the bodies.

Fallout 4 xbox: game freezing, is it my mods or just the game? Advice appreciated!

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 05:26 PM PDT

I love the fallout games and have been playing for years. Last summer I played fallout 4 for around 15 hours with the unofficial game patch and everyones best friend on it before it crashed. Because of this I had to restart my entire game. Anyways I have been playing on this new one for around 33 hours now and i have run into the same issue. It lets me go into the game (sometimes) but it always freezes, sometimes with the buzzing noise, sometimes not. My mod load order is :unofficial patch , everyones best friend, the machine and her and the amazing follower tweaks. I have tried changing the order, disabling and reinstalling the game. I don't know what else i can do. Has anyone else had similar issues/know how to fix this? I absolutely love the game and really don't want to lose all of my progress again.

Edit: i have the Goty edition if that matters
