Fallout Lore | Is there an economy within a vault?

Is there an economy within a vault?

    Posted: 10 Mar 2021 07:48 AM PST

While living inside a vault, are the residences paid in a currency for doing their job/tasks? Are dwellers rewarded in a currency for doing their job or is living in the vault the reward itself and doing their job is just doing their part? The vaults usually have amenities (diners, bars, salons, hairdressers, vending machines, etc.), in the normal world we have to pay for such activities.

If there is no currency and everything is simply free how is it regulated? Each vault dweller, I assume, would be given 3 meals a day, maybe you're allowed 'X' amount of alchoholic beverages a week? Surely not all jobs are rewarded the same. A vault security officer would be given better benefits than someone who is tasked as a waitress, correct?

Just curious of what the answer is to this and how the vaults truly work from an internal economy standpoint.

How does Vault 81 not meet the same fate that Vault 3 did?

    Posted: 10 Mar 2021 11:59 PM PST

Please correct me if I missed a lore in Fo4 that explains this, but Vault 3 was immediately ransacked by the fiends through overwhelming numbers only about two weeks after opening their vaults and trading. I understand that the security in Vault 81 are definitely competent, but with all the raiders in FO4 being even more powerful than the fiends (they have Power armor ffs) as well as the marauding super mutants out and about, why hasn't vault 81 succumbed to the same demise vault 3 did?

What are some of the most advance weapons/tech the NCR has at their disposal?

    Posted: 10 Mar 2021 09:35 PM PST

Do the Dead Horses have more weapons than their Clubs and the Disciple's .45s?

    Posted: 10 Mar 2021 10:50 PM PST

I like tweaking the leveled lists in my game to add more weapon variety. White Legs are simple, the Sorrows don't fight, but shouldn't the Dead Horses get a hold of the occasional firearm?

Do they really stick to clubs and 45s, or should they have more lorewise? It's a little difficult for them to compete against the White Leg arsenal.

    Vaults, Hydroponics, and Chain Smokers

    Posted: 10 Mar 2021 05:34 PM PST

So, some vaults seem to have designated cigar lounges. The '50s being notorious for the height of the "smokers are cool" mindset, it's safe to say your typical pre-war citizen went through their cigarettes and cigars at a fair clip. By extension, this probably extends to the typical vault dweller.

I'm thinking about the logistics of how this would work. For a vault's standard sealed period of 180 days, you could possibly just keep each one stocked with smokables delivered in advance (though Vault-Tec would probably undershoot badly), but part of me wants to think most vaults had tobacco standard as part of their hydroponics selection and facilities for drying/rolling. What do you all think? Could a Mr. Handy roll a cigar?

    Overrated Fallout Characters?

Would a NCR or Legion courier ever be granted a rank inside either of those two factions?

    Posted: 10 Mar 2021 04:19 AM PST

Or would they forever pretty much be a freelance mercenary for them? After all, regardless of how much good you do for either side you never do get any invitations to join, nor seem to be granted any kind of rank.

So would an NCR/Legion courier ever be granted any kind of rank in those two groups provided they, you know, helped said faction take over the Mojave?

Why would Alice Mclafferty and Gloria Van Graff have signed contracts of their illegal dealings?

    Posted: 10 Mar 2021 11:50 PM PST

It just...seems so dumb. They're both committing blatantly illegal acts that could get them put on a firing squad and they figure it's a good idea to keep agreements with their signatures? Why? Cause if one side reneges they can get a lawyer to dispute the claim? That's not how that works.

T-60: Where is it? Why is it? How is it where it is?

    Posted: 10 Mar 2021 09:05 AM PST

Is it an East Coast only thing? I know it debuted in Fallout 4, and it's reasonable to assume it is Pre-War (even if very limited issue). Possibly a stockpile in Washington?

But then there's the problem of 76, where it's just there as well in West Virginia. Which probably means t-60 wasn't just a small occurence, it was probably widespread.

However, if it was widespread, how come the California Brotherhood is only using T-51b by 2281, only 6 years before Fallout 4? (Not that it matters, bc if T-60 is Pre-War, that means the timeframe post-war is irrelevant) Not to mention the NCR's habit of adopting power armor in some capacity.

We don't see literally anything to do with T-60 until Fallout 4, which has so little sense in it, it maddens me. If it was post-war developed, it would fix everything, but it's definitely described as Pre-War, which literally throws that out the window.

What say you, r/Falloutlore, what say you?

    Dear Admins,

Please don't remove this post again, I'm genuinely curious to hear bc I want to find an in-lore solution for my DnD campaign bc I'm stumped on what to do with T-60.

P.S. Thanks for running a great sub

What would happen if the enclave fought both the NCR and Caesar's legion simultaneously along with every other Mojave wasteland Faction?
