My pitch for a Canadian-American setting Posted: 25 Feb 2021 04:46 PM PST The setting is based around Lake Ontario, with Ontario (Canada) in the North-Western part of the map, whilst New York State (USA) is in the South-Eastern part of the map. The idea is that this satisfies all the fans who want a Fallout game outside of the continental US, whilst simultaneously retaining that charming American 1950s vibe that Fallout is so well known for. There would be some stark contrasts in terms of culture, but also signs of pre-war US attempts to assimilate occupied Canada through the blending of Canadian and American ideals, such as Canadian variants of Nuka-Cola (Nuka-Cola Maple? I don't know what you people are into). Anyway, with that all out of the way, I'll get into the gripes of what this setting will host: Background: Set 24 years after the end of Fallout 4, the game will span across the entirety of Lake Ontario and its surrounding areas, reaching as far south as Niagara Falls, and as far north as Kingston. It will draw inspiration from the story of New Vegas, with the area being contested by two major powers: the New England Commonwealth (NEC), and the Imperial State of Quebec (more on these later). Wedged between these two powers are a series of settlements and cities in Southern Ontario, which are loosely affiliated through the protection of The Mounties, a volunteer militia. The plot of the game will be that the NEC and Quebec are each vying for control over these unaffiliated settlements, and are in a cold-war of sorts - while not officially at war, it is clear that a large conflict is on the horizon, shown evident by the growth of border skirmishes and incursions into each other's territory. It will be the PC who decides who shall control Lake Ontario. The player character (PC) is a vault dweller who's vault inhabitants are the descendants of an American military contingent, with the experiment being to test the social consequences and sustainability of inheritance of rank, and a secondary role of acting as a reserve pool of manpower for the Enclave if necessary. The vault is on the outskirts of Toronto, and the original inhabitants were the US occupation force of the city. The PC is born into a very low-ranking family, and as such is assigned a low-rank themselves for the rest of their lives - repeated incompetence and cruelty from the officer families leads the PC to breaking out of the vault, and into the wastes. Gameplay: Not much to say here - for the most part it would be just like the other Fallout games, but with a stronger emphasis on skills and a return of the old perk system. Making use of advances in engine capability, the game would feature mounts along with a form of naval travel / combat implemented to traverse Lake Ontario, with a customisable player ship acting as a hub for companions, storage, rest, etc. There would be no voiced protagonist, and there would be unique dialogue options based on perks and skills. Player actions would have actual consequences, such as choosing to re-route medical supplies leaving certain settlements visibly worse off. Major Factions: New England Commonwealth - Following the destruction of the Institute, the Minutemen once again championed for the formation of a Commonwealth Provisional Government, this time without the threat of it being sabotaged by Institute agents. The alliance of settlements centralised more and more in the following years, eventually growing and expanding into a capable state comprising vast swathes of New England, spearheaded by the Minutemen's protection. This state is comparable to the New California Republic, in terms of its democratic values, vision for a return to the old-way-of-life and military might. By 2311, the NEC has expanded enough to reach Niagara Falls, where it retains a strong military presence in preparation for the annexation of the South Ontario settlements. Its main adversary is the Imperial State of Quebec, who are held up on the west side of the St Lawrence River. Imperial State of Quebec - Formed from the long-dead remnants of Quebecois insurgents against the American occupation of Canada, this faction draws its ideology from Napoleonic France, which they view as the epitome of a perfect state - militaristic, nationalistic and proud. They believe it is their duty to subjugate the wastes and build an empire of their own, one that Napoleon himself would be proud of. They are led by Emperor Napoleon V, the son of the first emperor of the Imperial State, Napoleon IV, who was a self-described heir and descendent of Napoleon I. Napoleon V, and his elite Imperial Guard have come to the frontiers of civilisation to personally oversee the incorporation of Southern Ontario into the Imperial State, in order to curb any NEC expansion and consolidate Quebecois control of Lake Ontario. The Mounties - Volunteers from the various South Ontario settlements who undergo harsh training in order to be comprised of the best. They are distinguished by their red tunics and stetson hats, along with their various mounts. The Mounties are the Canadian equivalent of the desert rangers, and have only the interest of the people of South Ontario at heart. They draw significant amounts of tradition from both the Canadian and British military. Minor Factions: Enclave - The militaristic vault that PC starts off in is eventually contacted by remnants of the Enclave, and expands into the immediate area with the intent of rebuilding the Enclave, and the United States military. Brotherhood of Steel - It couldn't be a Fallout game without the Brotherhood of Steel. The BOS has a very minor presence around Lake Ontario, with several small outposts (similar to Fallout 2) stationed in the area to keep an eye on events, gather unique technology, and occasionally meddle in local affairs. Ronto - The remnant of Toronto, and by far the largest settlement around Lake Ontario. It got its name by illiterate wastelanders reading road signs as "To Ronto". This is the de-facto hub of trade along the St Lawrence River and Lake Ontario, and is filled with lots of pre-war technology that marvels outsiders. It's still relatively intact as it wasn't directly hit (due to being an occupied territory). [link] [comments] |
Fallout 1 reimagined in Doomesque 3D Posted: 25 Feb 2021 10:19 PM PST Someone reimagined the classic in Doom like, early 90's 3d and I love it, thought I'd share it here since it has a criminally low amount of views for the effort put in. [link] [comments] |
I hope future Fallout Games include some real world weapons like Fallout 2 did. Posted: 25 Feb 2021 06:18 PM PST No reason why we can't have both generic and specific (real) weapons. In addition to the standard 10mm, Hunting Rifle, Assault Rifle, etc, Fallout Two also had weapons like: 9mm Mauser Pistol, Desert Eagle .44, M3a1 Submachine gun, H&K G11, FN FAL, Pancor Jackhammer, etc. And yeah, I know, "There are mods for that." Thanks. Already got 'em installed. I'd like to see some real stuff right out of the box instead of having to download mods for it six months later. That would be cool. For some reason the real world weapons just seemed so much more interesting than the generic stuff. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2021 03:29 AM PST I just ordered myself a Pip-Boy 2000 from the wand company, I'll be modding mine. Has anyone got any photos for inspiration? I really wanna get my hands on the stand too. [link] [comments] |
What's point of being a raider? Posted: 26 Feb 2021 03:23 AM PST It's so dangerous. Live do not understand where, everywhere drugs, unsanitary conditions, diseases, and a constant need for covers and resources. Are constantly attacked, at worst by insane mutated animals. Even though Porter Gage is best companion, there is no point in motivating him at all - He looks like raiders take whatever they want and join them... to make them better and more organized. At same time, he has two raiders communities at his side, who only want to destroy all, an other is literally a trade mafia, with which need to do business, and which can be less criminalized. But could bypass all this, and start organizing militia, in order to get enough of their resources. I'm trying to come up with motivation to join raiders, besides - hahaha, I can kill everyone. This is probably the most minute detail I could complain about Posted: 25 Feb 2021 05:37 PM PST I was playing the Vault building DLC from Fallout 4. I got to the point where you build a soda fountain in the Vault that Clem operates. I followed along with the cutscene where he gives some soda (I chose the option for it to just be enhanced caffeine soda) to the settler woman who came in the Vault with him. He gave her some soda and she said "I've had a Nuka-Cola once, but this-" and I just thought, how have you only had one Nuka-Cola? Every pre-war building has a case of them lying around, any store worth their weight of the cardboard box these people live in sells Nuka-Cola! How has she only had one her entire life when you can find them in free vending machines on most streets?! [link] [comments] |

Replaying Fallout Games with Bizarre Challenge Rules Posted: 25 Feb 2021 09:52 PM PST Hello all; like many of you here, I'm a long time fan of the series, and have logged hours upon countless hours playing every game of the series. One of my favorite things to do to maintain that replay value is by doing bizarre challenge playthroughs, which I'm sure many of you do as well. The challenges that youtubers like MittenSquad do are great, but I especially love challenges like these (1,2) that make you overcome different hurdles based on the use of specific glitches/quest perks/items; I feel like these challenge playthroughs really focus on knowing the game inside and out, rather than limiting yourself to specific weapons for the entire playthrough. I feel that Fallout 4 in particular has limitless potential for these types of playthroughs based on its perk-based progression system. Recently I completed Fallout 3 + all DLCs with all SPECIAL stats capped at 1, and am now going to take on New Vegas + all DLCs with the same limitation. What kind of bizarre challenge playthroughs have you all done/thought about doing, and what specific strategies have you used to complete them? I would like to hear some ideas from other superfans of the series, because each new challenge feels to me like playing a brand new Fallout game. [link] [comments] |
Quick Strawpoll Experiment - Fallout 3: The Pitt. Posted: 26 Feb 2021 01:59 AM PST I made a Strawpoll (because r/Fallout doesn't allow Poll Posts). I'm curious about people's choices in regards to the side chosen in Fallout 3: The Pitt. Single question, less than 10 seconds. Thank you in advance for contributing. [link] [comments] |

When did the US start using nuclear weapons against China? Posted: 25 Feb 2021 09:35 PM PST Most people tend to typically think about it being an equal exchange starting in 2077, but the US was already working on nuclear infantry weapons and potentially deploying them before The Great War. Since they are deploying nuclear weapons on an infantry scale, it's not unbelievable to assume that they were potentially already using nuclear artillery, bombers, etc. Is there any in game lore relating to the US using these methods in 2076 and before? Could you somehow copy the GOG files and paste them in the Steam version? Posted: 26 Feb 2021 05:31 AM PST First of all, i know nothing about coding and all this related stuff. I want to play Fallout 3 on Steam but since that is super buggy and GOG one isn't, i was wondering could you somehow copy the fixed files from GOG into the Steam version since i have severe OCD and just want to have all my games in one launcher or maybe Steam security detects that these aren't the original files or something like that? Posted: 26 Feb 2021 05:30 AM PST I've gotten to the "follow the freedom trail" part of the main questline. Game keeps freezing and crashing at the 4th or 5th clue on the way to the railroad. Is this a common issue, and what possible solutions are available? [link] [comments] |
[FNV] Can you confront anyone about the misdeeds of the NCR? Posted: 26 Feb 2021 05:17 AM PST From what I gathered, the NCR does a lot of shady stuff, like supplying drugs to Freeside to keep them from organising and growing in power too much, hiring mercenaries to provoke Jacobstown into attacking so they have an excuse to level Jacobstown, and I'm sure there are some more that I missed. Can I talk to someone in the NCR about these things? [link] [comments] |
I hope there'll be a story outside America Posted: 26 Feb 2021 05:11 AM PST Imagine China living the life. Or maybe America's allies may have been the same fate. Definitely different factions... [link] [comments] |
Discussion about Pickman (Fallout 4) Posted: 25 Feb 2021 03:12 PM PST Do you kill him or let him live? Why? I let him live, because the enemy of my enemy is my friend y'know. [link] [comments] |
Were The NCR originally suppose to be the Main Antagonist of Fallout New Vegas? Posted: 25 Feb 2021 05:16 PM PST So i read Chris Avellone's interview on the core-rpg.net , And he obviously disdains the NCR for being the-all-law-and-orderly-type of the apocalyptic world, He event went as far as to considering the idea of having story-based DLCS nuking a good amount of the NCR off of the Mojave because they were expanding too much, and are restoring wastelands back to old-world civilizations. I wondered if the NCR being the real bad guy was considered a thing in the cancelled Van Buren, and also in the early development of New Vegas, Because in the main final release of the Game we all know and love, The NCR is mainly portrayed as the Popular Protagonist faction, I say this because there are examples like render cover artworks of the Courier wearing the NCR Ranger Veteran armor most of the time, And especially one where he carries the flag of California Bear, You never seen Courier wearing Caesar legion gear at all, And the only artwork where he wears something different is his cowboy duster getup on the Lonesome Road Cover, There's barely anti NCR-stuff. Now look at other protagonists from Bethesda games like the Dovahkiin, He isn't wearing any faction armor at all, He's just wearing standard gear like scaled armor or iron armor, And it's easily believable to make him aligned with which faction you want him to be apart of. TL:DR: Main game supports Pro-NCR stuff all day, A New Vegas writer dislike them for being protrayed as the good guys restoring tranquility to the post-nuclear world, And would rather have them be Enclave 2.0. How to get fallout 3 goty to stop freezing full screen? Posted: 26 Feb 2021 04:25 AM PST Bought fallout 3 a week ago or so and finally now got it to start. Now the issue is how do I get it to not freeze my entire computer whenever it runs in fullscreen mode. (I have tried windowed mode and it works but I do not like how it doesn't take the whole screen up) [link] [comments] |
FO4 Newbie starting help (low spoilers/what to do early?) Posted: 26 Feb 2021 04:25 AM PST Hi! I am new to FO4 - I have played a number of open world ARPG or adventure type games (Skyrim, Witcher 3, Dragon's Dogma, AC Origins, etc.) and a couple that are FPS/RPG (Outer Worlds, Cyberpunk). I am starting Fallout and struggling a little. I think my initial issues with having limited ammo are just typical early game problems. I'm used to a lot of games like Witcher and Origins telling me suggested levels for quests or games like Skyrim adjusting them to my level. What I'm getting is that I'm just finding everything I try difficult at the normal setting, or more difficult than normal difficulty should be (I tend to play these games at normal or a step above that - I played Origins for instance on Hard). Skyrim was like this early on for me, but Skyrim also adjusted the levels of missions. So far this is what I did: I got the Minutemen to come to Sanctuary, I made my way to Diamond City. I got the first settler group that's to the East of Sanctuary to come on board (the ones that sent me to the Corvega plant - I thought actually that I didn't finish the Corvega plant, because there were still raiders on the upper level and I was pinned down with the auto turrets, but when I left because I had too much, it told me I'd succeeded). I took Piper to try to rescue Nick Valentine right now. Also I did the early Sturges items (I established the basic beds/food/water/defense at Sanctuary). Am I more or less doing the right things and I need to push through it? Or am I supposed to be doing something else? If I am using pretty basic weapons - pipe pistol, a basic shotgun, a tire iron - is this right for around this early point? I think my level is 7 or 8. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2021 10:50 AM PST The weapons of the modern Bethesda Fallout games suck. I want to start by saying that I still like the games, well Fallout 4 at least. But the design style of Fallout 4 weapons are kinda gross. Let me start with the biggest, and most disgusting looking gun: the assault rifle. I assume that they modeled it to look good with power armor, which in that case makes sense since it fits the style of bigger is better, but in the hands of the player or the Gun Runners, it just looks wrong. The gun takes inspiration from water-cooled machine guns of the first and second World Wars, which is cool, but comes with a cumbersome and somewhat immersion ruining experience. The assault rifle looks as if it weighs 50 pounds and covers the entire enemy's upper body. The removal of the Fallout 3 and New Vegas style of realistic modern weapons is so strange to me, yet they have the sub machine gun, and later added the handmade rifle, which is a semi-modern AK platform. The 10mm pistol also has this "why is this gun the size of my torso" effect that makes me not want to use the weapon at all. Another gripe would be the fact that every enemy has a form of pipe weapons. There a hundreds of guns left over from the war and yet you see people with pea-shooters throughout the wasteland. Again, this is immersion breaking since the variety of weapons is so low. From memory, there is the pipe weapons, the 10mm platform, assault rifle, shotgun, sub machine gun, laser and plasma weapons. Obviously there are outliers of the revolver and the odd unique weapons, but every enemy has the same 5-6 weapons. In a game that has 100+ hours of content, that is unacceptable. Finally, and most atrociously, why is everything left-handed. Fallout 3 and NV included the hunting rifle, animated it properly as a right-handed weapon, and then changed that in 4 to have more animation on the screen. Why? As a gun enthusiast this hurts to look at and forces me to use mods that correct these unnecessary changes. Bonus gripe: when you holster your gun it disappears. This is lazy at best and insulting at worst. I enjoyed walking around in 3rd person to see my character's loadout and gear while exploring the wastes, but when I pull my gun out of my pocket, I feel cheated from an immersive experience. What are your thoughts on what I've said? I'd love to hear your opinions on the models! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2021 10:50 AM PST Before anyone says "you don't have to build settlements" I want to say you're right, but it's readily apparent that the game wants you to base build. The foremost faction in the game you can interact with has settlement building as a central part of their story. Half of the DLC for Fallout 4 is settlement content, so it's a little more than a feature you can skip. Surely there can be a way that players can base build without giving up interesting dev-built communities with named NPCs. [link] [comments] |
