A Critique of Fallout: New California

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 03:30 AM PDT

Having just finished my first playthrough of Fallout: New California, I can say that this is easily one of the best mods, if not the best, most expansive mod ever released for New Vegas. I feel like it ties into New Vegas's story beautifully, and it would make for an interesting trilogy of the Courier's story, along with The Frontier (when it finally releases). Having said that, there are a few points that I feel could have made this into an even more phenomenal experience:

1- The Companions: I enjoyed having a full squad at my side in the main quest. It kind of sold the idea that the protagonist is this badass leader and the whole team mechanics gave me a Fallout Tactics vibe. Unfortunately, I felt like Ben Kurtz aside, they were a wasted opportunity in terms of dialogue and character development. The prologue and first chapter made you grow to care for them, but the lack of dialogue options or companion quests just felt like wasted potential. In addition, Kira, who seemed to have been initially written as a potential love interest (at least in my Nerd playthrough), quickly devolved into a total bitch. I suppose this was intentional, but I felt like I genuinely resented her the longer she stayed in my group and she quickly became the least character I cared about. I feel like her hotheadedness and singular drive for revenge/answers could have been handled better, making her a far more well rounded character.

2- The Map: It was huge, and pretty beautiful, actually, which was also quite disappointing to me. Aside from the main quest, there was never really an incentive to fully explore it, which is a shame considering how big the map is. Also, it felt like there were vast areas of empty that could have been better utilized. This brings us to the next problem.

3- The Main Quest: Don't get me wrong. I personally thought the main quest was great and ties in pretty well with the beginning of New Vegas. The story is easily better than anything Bethesda pumped out in the last five years. Unfortunately, in order to tell such a story, it ended up being a little too linear for my taste. I am aware that there was plenty of side quests, but aside from the first act in Vault 18, there was never an incentive to really explore or find any side quest givers. Even worse, (unless I'm mistaken, in which case feel free to correct me!) you never get to explore the Pass after the main quest ends. You're just thrust into the Mojave Wasteland. I feel like there should be a way to somehow move back and forth between worldspaces, even if that's kind of lore-breaking. They don't even have to make a post-game Pass; just allow us to revert to a state just before the final battle. There's also the fact that there are a few plot-holes and disappointing details in the endings, but it's nothing a few mental gymnastics and headcanon can't fix, and the Fallout series is no stranger to either of those anyway.

That's not to say that this is a bad mod, because literally everything else (aside from the occasional bugs and performance issues) is top notch. Everyone who has played New Vegas owes it to themselves to try it, considering it's a mod of this scope and it's free. I would even go as far as to claim this mod is a perfect excuse to buy New Vegas on PC if you don't have it already.

Am I the only one that has only ever sided with the NCR?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 07:30 AM PDT

I've played this game countless times since it originally came out on Xbox 360/PS3, and I always end up siding with the NCR. The one time I decided to side with House, I still ended up betraying him and helping out the NCR towards the end. It must be the ranger armor that gets me every time.

    Cut content

I have nothing to discuss about cut content of New Vegas actually. I just came by to tell you that I've watched the content that was cut on YouTube and that made me feel like one happy kid in a playground imagining stuff out of the blue.

How to absolutely maximize a Yes Man playthrough?

I want to leave the Legion and NCR in as bad of a position as possible, while leaving the Mojave in the best possible position. I already plan on nuking the NCR and Legion, but is there anything else I can do?

What is the cause of this? Text disappearing and then the game freezes altogether with game sounds still happening?

Your experience with the Great Khans?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 10:18 AM PDT

I felt like a complete ass when I left Red Rock. In-depth thoughts here (video form).

For context, I rode the NCR path and was being a good little soldier boy most of my time in the Mojave, but leaving Red Rock really made me second guess wtf I was doing. When you walk into the canyon it's really something else and no text can do it justice, but then chatting up with Papa Khan and hearing his take on Bitter Springs:

"Oh, they claimed it was a miscommunication, but tell that to those who saw our families butchered. Tell it to the survivors who were banished here."

Shitty, sure. But I was on a mission to help the Republic and if I could get the Great Khans to side with us, then that seems like a great next step.

Talked to the locals, befriended Regis, exposed Karl (the Legion frumentarius). Though it was all for naught, as Papa Khan still rejected any attempt at siding with the NCR.

The thing is, could I really blame him? Is it really unfair to expect the leader of a "tribe of warriors" to not side with a faction that slaughtered its people and banished its population to the upper outskirts of the Mojave?

Yet still... I followed through with Colonel Moore's orders and assassinated him in his sleep, effectively deceiving Regis into getting the now-leaderless tribe to become "machete fodder" (in the words of Colonel Moore) for the NCR in the Second Battle.

Leaving Red Rock was when I began to realize I was just another cog in the corrupt NCR machine.

What was your experience with Red Rock raiders?

Part two in the ongoing saga of being bad at old games

Game keeps freezing infinitely or crashing with no message (modded)

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 08:16 AM PDT

I recently got back into FNV and I tried modding the game using vortex. The game used to crash with out of memory message but it got fixed using the 4gb patch (already checked the console and it's working). Now the game just keeps freezing/crashing every 15 minutes making it unplayable.

These are the mods I use:

NVSR, NVAC, NVSE, JIP NVSE, 4gb patch, ENboost

    Fellout

    Populated casinos

    Project Nevada

    NV bounties & someguy

    Brave New World

    EVE

    NMCs texture pack

    Interior lighting overhaul

I already tried disabling the NMC texture pack as it seems to be the heaviest mod I have, but the problem persists. Any suggestions on how to fix this or which mod might cause the problem?

Perception is the worst stat in the game.

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 01:42 AM PDT

Here me out. Perception governs lockpicking, explosives, energy weapons, and the compass. You can have a perception of one and tag those three skills and go pick up ede in primm and see every enemy like you have perception ten. PERCEPTION BY ITSELF DOES NOT AFFECT VATS WHATSOEVER. there are some perks locked behind perception that affect vats that you may want but agility and luck are better for a vats build in general.
