Why was San Francisco a weird city?

According to Wiki, it said that San Francisco was a werid city, even after the Great War, the city just became werider. Is it because there are many people who lived there were from East Asia and making the city a little bit different from the rest of country? or was there something else?

What were the actual targets of the bombs? And what is actually safe in the world after they fell?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 07:25 PM PDT

From my understanding, it was mostly China and the USA at war with each other. Either one sent the first bomb and the rest soon followed. Now I know the US has even nuclear weapons to destroy the world on its own, and I assume China does as well. So what would be their targets? I doubt China would send a nuke to somewhere like Idaho and I find it hard to believe there's any strategic value in West Virginia (apart from the conveniently created launch sites in-game). New York, Washington DC, Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Seattle, Houston, Denver, and Chicago I can see as all strategic targets with their surrounding areas being in the blast zone. And the same with China. Sure the coasts are major power centers but like anywhere inland towards Tibet or Mongolia seems like a waste. Plus if it's just the two countries at war, wouldn't places like Africa, the Middle East, South America, and parts of Europe be safe from the bombs and the fallout?

Why is the Courier even allowed to interact with BoS?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 03:05 PM PDT

I understand why on meta-level but I find the BoS part of FNV to be really rough around the edges.

    1st problem: entry.

If they literally isolate themselves to the point that the whole bunker is on lockdown, why do they even let you in? They literally shoot people on sight. Yes, I understand—the Elder needs someone to do errands for him and he doesn't let his own guys out (with a few exceptions, so they don't all starve) but it seems like letting in a random wanderer in is just... off.

Off as in stands in opposition to their code and off as in why would you even trust some random stranger to do your job and actually return with results? Hell, the first part of your quest is to find those missing patrols but what if you actually find the patrols, gather all their data, take their power armor and guns, and whatever tech they recovered? Isn't that really against what BoS stands for? Just a random stranger getting access to all that?

Fallout wiki says that as an outsider you're a "natural choice" to go look for lost patrols but to me it seems like everything but the "natural choice."

    2nd problem: change in leadership

On the subject of things being off: two minutes after talking to the Elder, you get Harding telling you that he actually wants to overthrow him. Ok, I'm a literal stranger and a wastelander and you tell me of this big ploy to overthrow the leader of this whole bunker. It makes sense to use someone neutral for his plans (to get information), but the very act of telling the Courier all that minutes after seeing them seems really irresponsible.

I suppose it's not such a huge secret because we know he's been trying for some time now and perhaps Elder doesn't feel threatened, but the Courier could just go back and tattle all of this which would surely warrant some action? I mean a BoS Paladin asking a random wastelander to remove the Elder? That stinks.

Once again, I understand that they wanted us to meet the BoS hence why the Courier gets a special treatment but the ludonarrative dissonace is really strong in this one, so I was wondering is there a sane, in-lore explanation on why would they do all those things?

    Was Elder Maxson a synth?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 09:42 AM PDT

I know that Danse obviously was one, but what about elder maxson and ingram? it's semi-implied in a prydwen terminal, but i'm interested to see if it's actually what i'm taking it to be.
