Drugs, Ghosts and Prophecies: an examination of clairvoyant psychic abilities Posted: 21 Apr 2020 03:10 AM PDT This originally started as a broad post about psychers, but I got way too focused on 1 type and had to make this its own discussion. This will also be a very speculative discussion, but given that it's on a topic we're almost certain to never get any concrete answers on, that's pretty unavoidable. I'll do my best to establish a decent foundation of known qualities before the speculation. Psykers are something of catch-all term in the Fallout universe for people with paranormal powers, but the most common type seems to be a sort of clairvoyance where users can see into the past, present and/or future of others. Known examples:
The 2 main sources for psyker powers seem to be mind altercation and mutations: Mutations, be they from radiation, FEV or maybe even just natural biological deviation, are more random and less consistent as mutations generally are. Alternatively there's mind altercation, which is more measured. Professor's Calvert's special bio-gel grants telepathy to his otherwise normal brain. Nightkin suffer neuro-chemical changes from stealthboy usage that would explain their powers while other west coast Super Mutants lack them. Mama Murphy and possibly Hakunin also rely on the mind altering effects of chems for enhancing their abilities. With that in mind if we look at clairvoyance abilities we can form an interesting chain. The Forecaster's ability to commune with the dead is particularly curious. Ghosts/spirits appear to the player 6 times throughout the series (I'm counting direct appearances, so no New Vegas whispering graves); Anna Winslow, Lucy Grandchester, the office in the Dunwich Building, the cult in the Dunwich Bores, Ghost Of She and Mother Of The Fog. Again we can break this into categories of 2 each; mortals with unfinished business, spooky elder god shit and the player on a drugged vision quest. It's that last one that stands out since Mama Murphy (and possibly Hakunin) use chems for their visions. (Mama Murphy does mention in a dialogue with Jun that she cannot commune with the dead, but she also mentions people's "energies" which does seem to loop back to spirituality somewhat, or at the very least, a nonphysical aspect to everyone's existence.) In short there does seem to be overlap between ghosts, drugs and clairvoyance albeit a pick 2 of 3 situation. With that I think there's a solid foundation for speculation about the source of clairvoyant powers: they're pulled from an afterlife. Some form of alternate dimension or reality that overlaps with the main Fallout universe, acting as a sort of afterlife that's more disconnected from time and space allowing those who look into it to see beyond their immediate surroundings and the present. An altered and/or mutated mind can bring you out of your world and partly into theirs. The voices Nightkin are hearing could be spirits; wayward souls that can see beyond the normal bounds of a mortal reality and pass along that info. How exactly gods and religion fit into this new world of spirits is unclear. Regardless, the presence of The Interloper beneath the mountains of Appalachia suggests that this bleed is not just in a single direction. [link] [comments] |
Why don't the Fallout 4 TVs have color, but the Fallout 76 ones do? Posted: 22 Apr 2020 03:30 AM PDT I know the TVs in Fallout 3 and 4 are based on the Philco Predicta and the Fallout 76 variants are based on a 'newer' model of the Television, but is there any reason why most TVs in 2077 don't have color or even HD for that matter? It's always something that bugged me even to this day. [link] [comments] |
Why did the Zetans in Mothership Zeta make the abominations? What purpose do they serve? Posted: 21 Apr 2020 06:00 PM PDT |
Why is Legion equipment so undeveloped? Posted: 21 Apr 2020 07:24 PM PDT In comparison to NCR gear, where they have semi automatic rifles, armor, radio, etc. I know the legion is made out of tribes, but they could have done better. Men in sports gear with machetes, really? [link] [comments] |
Did Sergeant Granite survive Fallout 2? Posted: 21 Apr 2020 01:46 PM PDT I realise there probably isn't a cannon ending around whether the Chosen One asked Granite to help them kill Frank Horrigan, but I was just curious if on the off chance that he might have, what became of the brave soldier that single handidly saved my ass on my first playthrough of the game, long before I understood the significance of the presidential keycard. Posted: 22 Apr 2020 03:50 AM PDT Just curious if anyone knows what power source a Pip-Boy uses. I'm just wondering because I've got phones that have been powered down for several years and don't appear to work, yet the sole survivor finds a 200 year old Pip-Boy in the vault, boots it up and the power lasts the entire game, which could be years in game time [link] [comments] |

Anyone know where I can find a list? Cheers. [link] [comments] |
So what would explain why the mutations from 76 don’t appear in other games? Posted: 21 Apr 2020 04:02 PM PDT Even if people adjusted to the radiation so they wouldn't mutate as frequently, it's possibly that the mutations could have been passed down the old fashioned way - genetically. So, where did they go? [link] [comments] |
Why doesn’t the NCR take Cottonwood Cove? Posted: 21 Apr 2020 03:33 AM PDT I know they're kinda tied up with Searchlight and all, but I was able to kill every Legion soldier in the cove by level 20. Surely the might of the NCR could crush the Legion there and cut off the main port to their base camp. Is there something stated in-game or in the comic that explains why they're holding back?
