It may not happen, but something I'd like to see in future games (Fallout & Elder Scrolls): Built-in alternate start

Spoiler note: Refers to plot elements from Fallout 3, 4, Oblivion, and Skyrim.

I've recently been playing Fallout 4 with the Start Me Up alternate start mod, and in following the main quest, I've really come to realise just how deeply the Sole Survivor's story is ingrained into the game. So many parts had to be changed or removed for it to make sense for you to not be the concerned parent. Contrast this to Skyrim's alternate start mod, and it basically just puts you at some other place on the map, and says "Go have fun." If you go to Helgen, all the dialogue referring to "You were at Helgen," still makes sense.

In the Elder Scrolls games, you're a nameless prisoner, every time. You choose how you got there, whether you are wrongfully imprisoned or not, and so on. All that matters is what you do in the future, as far as the game's story is concerned.

In the Fallout games, you always have some level of identity - Vault Dweller, Courier - and in 3 and 4, you have some amount of pre-existing personal connection with others - your fellow residents and father in 3, and your son, spouse and robot in 4.

The problem, I think, is differing expectations for the character. Players expect to be able to be anyone and do anything, but Bethesda seem to want to make you feel more connected to the world by giving your character some background. And it only half works. If you buy into it, and play the concerned parent in F4, you'll have a fine game, but if you don't, you'll be fighting the game's narrative the whole way. Same thing for F3, you break out of the vault, rushing after dad, but then you might wander around aimlessly forever until you reach the level cap, and dear old James is stuck playing The Sims VR with Stan for the rest of until you decide to care.

For me, the best character plotline was Oblivion. You aren't the "Chosen One", you're the chosen one's assistant, and if your character doesn't care about the plight of the world, they can look the other way and ignore the main quest, and it won't feel quite so out of place. You're given a pretty important task, but you could be playing the kind of person who drops the amulet in Lake Rumare, and goes your own merry way. If you were the chosen one in Oblivion, you'd play as [your name here] Septim, Priest of Kvatch, who just learned they're the only one who can save the world.

I think if Bethesda want to have a predetermined character, they can, and they can go all out writing that character exactly the way they want. They can give them a fixed name, and it can be the canon story. It can be the default option for a player's first playthrough. They would need to be voiced, for the next part.
As an example, take Fallout 4, and remove the Sole Survivor. The default character could be Preston Garvey, and you follow his story of rebuilding the wasteland and leading the Minutemen. The other factions all present their own challenges, and you choose how to deal with them, either allying with some amount of compromise, or you eradicate them.

You can also have the choice of making your own character, with your choice of starting location, occupation, name, race, and no voiced dialogue, to really open up the world for players to mess around with. And as far as the main quest goes, your canon voiced Preston from the first playthrough is now a voiced NPC who needs help. You can leave the main quest alone if you want, or you could solve it in your own way. This gives you freedom of choice for your playthrough, but it doesn't change canon.

But why should the main storyline be a fixed canon, anyway? Practical and technical limitations, basically. You'd end up with Mass Effect levels of complexity if every game had to support every possible combination of choices for every previous game. Currently, it feels like Fallout is hopping all over the US, delicately trying to avoid the plot of the previous games, and only lightly referring to them, since they don't know exactly what you did in your playthrough.

Why not have only one character that the player chooses, and determine what's canon out of game? Because that feels arbitrary, and like the developer is telling you that you may have played the game the 'wrong' way. Putting it in the game means that you as the player still did those things, and they made sense for the character to do, but you still have the option to make another character and see what would happen if you did things differently.

I am aware that this would increase the amount of work required. The more I read over it, the more it sounds like killing one bird with two stones. It would have to be a decision they make at the very start of the project, but I think it's a decent option for having a character that feels like part of the world and a canon that can be expanded on in sequels without excess complication, while also opening up the game for replayability and user modification.

Throwback to a Brotherhood of Steel/Empire insigna I made some years ago, while writing a book-lenght story set in the Fallout Universe with a few "foreign" elements.

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 04:44 PM PDT

For some reason I found myself scrolling all the way to my very first post on Reddit, and I felt nostalgic about it so I thought I'd show it here. Guess it counts as Original Content, but if I need to change the flair just let me know.

This is one of Thirteen Insignae I made to keep as reference for my writing project, in which the Brotherhood had a little more Arthurian flavour to it and the various Houses, which in absence of a ruling Maxson were in competition for the title of Leading House, were specialised in different fields of the art of War and of the recovery of long lost old world technological marvels. I for most of the names I used prominent Brotherhood of Steel Characters, like the Houses of of Vree, Casdin, Rhombus, Ryczek and Jacob, but sometimes I let the Insigna give a name to the house.

In this particular case, the House of Bogan (a name for the Dark Side of the Force, from the Empire logo and Darth Vader's lightsaber) was the repository of most of the knowledge concerning Energy Melee weapons and the martial arts and fighting styles with it associated. There is no Force in this world though, so don't expect the Inquisitor of Bogan to start force chocking his opponents, or shooting thunders from the fingertips.

More factions in the style of the Kings

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 06:44 PM PDT

This may not be a popular opinion, but I thought the Kong's were super interesting. I would like to see another Kings like faction, based on one certain person like Arnold Schwarzenegger or something like that. The problem is it seems like modern Fallout doesn't like those smaller factions as much

    Next fallout location

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 10:45 AM PDT

Probably gonna take place on the east coast again because Bethesda. But if I had a suggestion for setting I think it would be cool to take place in Oregon, Washington, and maybe part of British Columbia, Canada as a dlc since those areas are close to the original setting of 1, 2, and NV. I think one character from 1 is from BC too.

I just found out that materiel is actually a real word and not a typo in Fallout 3.

And i thought they made a similar error in FO4

Fallout New Vegas: The Gambler Run

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 02:44 AM PDT

    Hello everyone.

I've been wracking my brains for the last couple of weeks to come up with an interesting challenge to run through New Vegas, and think I may have a good start.

Inspired by the gamblers of New Vegas, our Courier uses coin tosses, dice rolls, and roulette spins to make decisions and assign skill points within the game.

On top of this, I think it would be interesting to impose some anti-perks on the character (decided by roulette spin after every level up) to make the game more challenging and unpredictable.

So far my ideas for anti-perks include:

Alcoholic - Instantly consume any and all alcohol you see.

Cursed Tongue - No longer allowed to participate in speech checks.

Hackerman - Must pass hacks first time or locked out (no backing out after 3rd guess).

Passed Out - You pass out and wake up with you entire inventory gutted.

Would love to hear any other ideas I could use to enhance this run. Any ideas for anti perks or how to build more gambling into the meta-game, while still giving the player room to strategize.

    Cheers!

How closely to American culture during the 60's is the Fallout universe?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 10:55 AM PDT

Being from Africa myself I find the whole Fallout universe fascinating.

For instance some the many things that catches my attention:

    1. The thickness of the metal plating used to make things like fridges and stoves. They look so durable. Even the thickness of the glass as well as the extra glass used at the bottom of the Nuka-Cola bottles look so awesome.

    2. Stuff like the Monster Mash Mondays posters where there seems to be a party of some sorts every Monday night at the school (Fallout 76). Does this sort of thing really happen?

    3. All the propaganda and overly strong work ethic even against what would be safe. Like the major of the town in the North of 76 says over and over (want to keep this spoiler free).

How much of this was real and is still present? Do some of the older players in America feel some nostalgia about the products and feel of the world?

It would seem that the universe of Fallout before the bombs fell were pretty good to the worker class. Was this so in the 60's and is it still so?

EDIT Thanks for the detailed reply friends, much appreciated.

I should have more clearly defined what I meant with good to workers. What I actually mean is that every person that had a job had a big house, TV, expensive appliances and maybe even a car. Where do the cleaners and other non skilled workers live for instance?

What plan did Vault Tec have with the Appalachian nukes?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 06:08 PM PDT

I only have a few hours in 76 so I apologize if the game spells it out. But knowing Vault Tec's usual dastardly plans the memo explaining that the overseer of 76 was to secure nuclear silos even if the government shows up leads me to believe they were planning a nuclear coup. That or they didn't want the US government to survive and destroy their experiments by opening vaults and rebuilding society.

Choosing clothing and armour more for aesthetics

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 04:06 AM PDT

Hi all. Having another run through Fallout 4 (Melee/pistols with no scopes). I pick my armour for followers, robots and my character more based on how it looks rather than the maximum stats lol If it doesn't match I don't like it. Anyone else the same?

Battle of Anchorage: Was There Ever A Game For It?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 03:57 AM PDT

Just been reading up about the Battle of Anchorage recently. Seems like a really great candidate for a full-length AAA FPS title.

I already know about the Fallout 3 DLC. Was just wondering if any company ever made a fan-game or if such a game was considered by Bethesda.

It would be cool to see fallout 1&2 be remastered to come out on consoles for people who haven’t played it

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 12:48 PM PDT

Ik a lot of people who haven't played 1 and 2 who also don't have a PC and it would be nice for a remaster. Although it's been stated they don't believe in it, Skyrim has been remastered and ported so many times

Fallout 4 now freezing around Goodneighbor. Any known fixes? [Xbox One]

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 03:31 PM PDT

I disabled all of my mods on the Xbox one, and still, my game is freezing at the area around Goodneighbor. Which while technically better than crashing, is still suboptimal. It is just the vanilla game doing this. Any known fixes for this?

(Fallout 3) Dr. Stanislaus Braun cut dialogue

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 04:50 PM PDT

I've heard of this cut dialog from Fallout 3's Tranquility Lane simulation that was accessed through using the Chinese Invasion Failsafe, inciting Dr. Braun to have a meltdown revealing that he knows a lot more about the Great War then the player character ever would. Does anyone have any evidence that this dialogue existed at some point?
