    Joshua Graham's Legion?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 09:29 AM PDT

While playing through Honest Hearts I have started to notice some similarities between the way Graham is leading the Dead Horses and the beginnings of Caesar's Legion.

When speaking with Caesar tells you how his Legion came to be. He speaks of his capture by the Blackfoot's and how he was able to teach them and become their leader:

"I taught them how to use the guns they already had - how to strip and clean them, how to breathe when pulling a trigger, how to reload ammunition. They looked at me like I was some kind of a sorcerer. So I taught them how to make explosives, and started drilling them on small unit tactics."

Compare this to what Follows-Chalk says of Joshua Graham's relationship with the Dead Horses:

"Joshua Graham - he leads our tribe. Thanks to him, the Dead Horses are strong, and safe from our enemies."

As well as what Joshua himself says:

"We are responsible for leading and protecting the Sorrows and Dead Horses. They are smart people, but not as worldly as you or I."

Now, there are some major differences: Graham is not as focused on conquering as he is on defending the dead horses, and he is not trying to assimilate the tribal cultures.

However, if we choose the more violent ending to the DLC, where we let Joshua execute Salt-Upon-Wounds, we get the following ending:

"With the White Legs crushed, Joshua Graham led the Sorrows and Dead Horses in tearing apart and burning the corpses of their enemies. He set about training his army in the "Way of the Canaanite," and soon the New Canaanites and tribes of Zion were feared well into the Mojave. Legends of the Burned Man grew even more depraved, and terrifying."

This sounds much more like Caesar's Legion. This ending implies Joshua has banded together the tribes of Zion into a confederation and due to their being feared they must be expanding to some degree.

What do you think about this aspect of the DLC? Do you think it was intentional? I have always felt that Honest Hearts had some "colonial" undertones (with the white savior Mormons "civilizing" the trials) that were never fully addressed and these legion similarities seem to fall under a similar category.
