How does your character know that caps are currency?

Aside from Fallout 1 and 2 (although if I remember right 2 used poker chips) it's never explained to your character when starting out that caps are used as currency and bartering is a thing. This is especially weird in 4 because you're from a time when paper money was still used. It makes sense in New Vegas since you were already acclimated to that environment but even in 3 you're never told. You're just expected to have a handful of caps.

    Trying to find a location

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 08:55 AM PST

This is going to sound really crazy; but I remember seeing someone talking about this location on a Youtube video once that I was excited to find; yet I can't for the life of me find where it is, partially because I don't even know if I'm looking in the right game.

From what I remember being shown, it was an old factory that was connected to a toxic pool of water, and was being used as a stronghold. The big part was that near the irradiated water there was you could find a body that belonged to a woman, and if you read the notes, it seems she was researching the ghouls that were attracted to the lake.

Obviously I might be getting some of the details wrong, but does anyone have an idea of where praytell I might be thinking of?

How were caps universally adapted as the main currency?

Every game uses caps as currency. Yes there are Legon coinage and NCR dollars but thats only within those factions. In a loading screen tip in Fallout 4 it says "All across the United States, in the aftermath of the Great War, the bottle caps of Nuka-Cola are the most commonly used currency." Which says that caps are used practically everywhere.

What I dont get is that they are used everywhere. They were originally used as currency in shady sands as there were a set amount so inflation wasnt a problem and they were hard to fabricate. But then theres the east coast, which is thousands of miles away, literally. Which still uses bottlecaps. Shady Sands was almost isolated, on the edge of the map. They didnt get many visitors so they didnt communicate and their currency wouldnt spread all that much. Even as a part of the NCR, the NCR only has reach on the east coast and they use their own money.

Bottlecaps wouldnt spread as that area used NCR dollars. And evenmif people whomused cap migrated to the east coast bynthen they would have set up their own money system, or they might even have reverted back to trade.
