    Wasteland ludonarrative dissonance nitpick

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 06:48 PM PDT

To anyone unfamiliar with this phrase it is basically when the narrative of the gameplay and lore/story conflict. This is a common flaw seen in all games not just in fallout 3 or even in the other fallout games but games of different franchises. A common example of this is when the player protagonist is threatened with a single gun and obeys despite being able to survive and being shot multiple times, this can be found in far cry, call of duty and GTA.

An itch has been on my mind the past couple of days about fallouts 3 ludonarrative dissonance (this is coming from someone who loves the game provably more than anyone in this subreddit and defends the game from new vegas fanboys) which is present in the wasteland. The wasteland of fallout 3 is definitely beautiful, and amazing to play through and one of the best parts of the game. However, the wasteland is so anarchistic and dangerous it makes you wonder how people travel the wasteland at all especially the traders. This gets apparent when one is at or around level 30 where the albino radscorpions, super mutant overlords, and all around tougher enemies show up.

I witnessed doc hoff die in a super mutant heavy location and I saw crow and his guard have trouble with a mister gutsy. It becomes a wonder how each trader makes it to their spot which the wasteland is dependent on. I should also mention it is explicitly stated these caravans make their rounds through the wasteland and it is implied through the guards and their weapons that they fend off threats.

This isn't a terrible flaw it may even just count as a nitpick as it could even be fixed by giving the NPC's better equipment, leaving tougher enemies in certain locations or increasing the health and damage those NPC's could dish out. After all merchants who are important for the wastelands economy and probably rich from their occupation should be the most well armed. This has just been on my mind about the game that I wanted to share for discussion. Hell, I'm immersed in the game's environment, worldbuilding and hunter/barter/Brahmin economy which is why seeing merchants die ticks me off a bit. It could even be fixed by a mod. It may just be that my leveling is what's giving them greater threats than they should normally face.

For new vegas, I'm not as deep into that game as everyone else. I'm sure some people can find other examples of this type of flaw in new vegas as well, but one I know for certain is the fact that the Mojave wasteland is literally in a state of war not only between the legion and NCr but also different factions against the NCR and yet the wasteland there is so predictable, safe and quite most of the time. Then you have the fact getting shot in the head is apparently deadly but only for the cutscene. But like any flaw of this game it can be swept under the rug with the magic phrase 18 months.

New player - is there a reason why the launcher lists my Graphics Adapter as NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS, instead of my actual video card? Will it affect performance?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 09:54 AM PDT

hi!! hope this is okay to post here, but since google didn't seem to help (and yes, i did check the complete game fix guide), maybe someone here can. after having played fnv/fo4 years ago, i finally picked fo3 up, and since its quite old and has no steam achievements, im following some guides to get the game to work, install the unofficial patch, etc.

however, when i was setting up my graphic settings, i noticed that it lists the NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS as my Graphics Adapter...but my video card is a GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. i can imagine it might just not recognize it as such because its too new for how old the game itself is, but does this actually mean it wont put my card to use? or is it just a placeholder? do i have to change anything in the game files, or can i leave it as is? just trying to figure everything out before i actually start playing, so if anyone knows, please lmk! thanks!
