Why was the area in which the G.E.C.K. was stored in Vault 87 so irradiated?

I remember that the entrance is irradiated because of the direct hit from a nuke but why is the area below so radioactive? I know the vault is in bad shape due to being ran by dollar store mutants but is there a terminal entry or dialogue that states there was a reactor meltdown or something? I just can't remember the reason why we needed to have Fawkes grab the GECK. Thanks!

    [FO4] Minutemen vs. the Institute?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 09:47 PM PST

Replaying Fallout 4, and a question just sprang to mind:

Several times throughout the game, it's mentioned that at some point in the past the Minutemen fought the Institute, either through a number of smaller conflicts or one grand battle, and actually managed to win. Piper mentions it, the bartender at Bunker Hill mentions it and so does Desdemona. But to my knowledge, this supposed major event(s) is never really elaborated on much.

Is there ANY concrete lore about this conflict and when it happened? To hold their own against the Institute, the Minutemen would've had to have been at the peak of their power and influence in the Commonwealth; I can only assume it occurred at some point between 2180, when they defended Diamond City against a Super Mutant horde, and 2240 when they lost the Castle to the Mirelurks, which marked the beginning of their decline.

This has been rattling around in my head for a while, and its driving me crazy.

Why is there only one way in to Vault 87?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 05:04 PM PST

Something that has always bothered me: if the front door to vault 87 doesn't work (due to the door being "inaccessible" even if you cheese the game and make it there without dying), how are the mutants getting in and out?

Now you might say, "well the door is only inaccessible to the player, the mutants are still able to use it". My rebuttal is that even if that were true, any humans the mutants bring to be dipped would instantly die from the radiation before even making it to the front door.

So how are they getting in and out? Can't be through Little Lamplight, the way you get in. So maybe there are other caves, but why don't we see them? Or in that same vein, how did the Enclave get in?

We’re laser weapons standard issue for the active duty US Army infantry pre-war (would Nate have used one for instance) or were they still sort of prototypes?

I know laser and plasma was the "future" but in FO3 and especially the Alaska DLC it seems conventional ballistics were still the norm. New Vegas's pre war weaponry also seems to confirm this. But in FO4, lasers show up in the prologue. I mean, I know they were military weapons and obviously soldiers used them to some capacity, but were they really common or just testing the way we test lasers and rail guns now?
