Why Fallout 3 gives a completely different feeling than other fallout games.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 04:16 PM PST

In my opinion, fallout 3 is the best feel a game ever gives you, and heres why:

Fallout 3 is a game that separates itself from other fallout series because of one reason: The eerie feeling it gives you. Just looking at the capitol building in the distance with a sickly green haze in the background gives you a weird feeling that you've probably never felt before. It gives you a feeling of fear and dread, being alone. That alone is what sets fallout 3 apart from any other fallout game. The feel is just so scary and unforgiving, a feel that tells you to stay in megaton and never come out. But when you come out of megaton you realize the ironic beauty of the Capital wasteland, and nuclear apocalypse itself. I just can't begin to put it in words... Play it on your own, and you will see what I mean. It's like you're Will Smith from I am Legend. What a masterpiece Bethesda made.

Edit: Thanks to all for the upvotes and awards. I've never even contemplated on getting on the "Hot" category of a subreddit. Thanks to everyone.

    Fallout 3: An Atmospheric Masterpiece

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 10:41 PM PST

I recently saw a post regarding the "feeling" Fallout 3 gives and it gave me inspiration to write this. Fallout 3 is one of the most atmospheric games of all time. I purchased my first copy of Fallout 3 in the winter of 2008 and it still sees plenty of play time in my steam library today. But let me say I have never experienced a feeling as magical as stepping outside and seeing the scenic overlook for the first time.

There is a sense of dread and strange feeling of grandeur that looms over the horizon. Inon Zur's mesmerizing ambiance music starts playing, creating an uplifting yet uneasy feeling of what is yet to come. Looking past the decimated town of Springvale, you see the silhouette of the abandoned Capitol Hill and again, that mixture of despair and excitement come back. So you walk through the empty town and hear what sounds like old world propaganda from a lonely eyebot, spreading the word of the president without a sole to hear it. Further up, the scrap metal gates of Megaton eclipse the green-tinted sky and there it is: hope. A thriving community found, tucked-in, aside the lifeless world you were just introduced to.

No other game or medium has created that emotion for me yet.

I highly recommend attempting a no-kill survival run on Fallout 4 (mild spoilers)

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 04:01 AM PST

I am in the first act of one now, and it's proving to be immensely fun, I am learning way more about the game. Survival forces the player to really focus on the game's mechanics and layout, whilst a no-kill rule forces creativity.

When every cap is precious, you'll find interesting things (for instance, once you agree to get the Silver Shroud outfit for Kent, he will let you use his bed, saving you 10 caps when you want a full night's sleep in Goodneighbour), because you need to scrimp and pinch to buy legendaries.

Settlements become vastly more significant, as they allow you to resolve situations without personal violence (for instance, part of the "Diamond City Blues" quest takes place close by to Hangman's Alley).

Dialogue checks are important as both a way of handling delicate confrontations and as a source of XP.

The layout of dungeons is crucial (the pipe access to Corvega, along with some investment in Sneak, can allow a player to drop a Hallucigen gas grenade on Jared without being spotted by any hostiles) to victory.

Perhaps best of all, not killing people lets you overhear some fascinating dialogue. When sneaking into Hardware Town to mix up some paint, I heard a conversation I never had before. When resolving the problems of Tenpines Bluff, I actually got an interesting reference to a previous dungeon I had resolved, at Olivia!

There are a surprising variety of ways to resolve quests, many of which require outside-the-box thinking, and this is a great way to notice them.

If you could have one Fallout perk in real life, what would you choose?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 02:38 AM PST

For me I'd choose nuclear anomaly. Anyone tries to fight me they're getting their legs blown off.

    Snakes in fallout

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 10:35 PM PST

Why hasn't there been any inclusion of snakes as a mob in fallout since before new Vegas? Or reptiles rn general. The only memorable reptiles I can think of are death claws. Just a thought

The FO4 laser rifle is my favorite looking weapon in the game, but wow, putting the charging notification lights on the sniper variant behind the scope is idiotic.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 07:17 PM PST

You can't see any of the second or third light so in combat you just have to guess when the shots are charged. It's so stupid for a sniper weapon.

How Should I Start Fallout 4?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 06:27 PM PST

I am not sure what I should do at the beginning to get the best start to the game. If there are any tips or tricks you know that would help me, it would be great to know them. Or any youtube videos that would help me would be greatly appreciated to get.

So, I get tired of these games, and then I stop playing them, but I love them! What do I do?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 11:26 PM PST

So I basically am just playing around the games, F3, FNV and F4. But I just get tired of these games either by enemies constantly killing me, me not knowing how to handle them, or a combination or both. I end up closing the game and not playing for weeks, just to see a video and end up excited again. Fallout 4 is pretty easy and the most enjoyable by my standards.

Whenever I come back it's frustrating to not know what you need or what you have in your inventory, what you need to do, your missions, etc.

    What do I do?

Does the suppressor work for the Radium Rifle?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 07:12 PM PST

I was messing around with the Kiloton rifle to give it bonus sneak damage. When I put the suppressor on it and shot, it still sounded like it was unsuppressed. Is it supposed to sound like that and will I still be heard if I shot it?

[FNV] Mission to delay the main storyline

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 03:11 AM PST

So, this is my first time playing FNV, and I know nothing about the outcome of the game besides one thing: whenever you end the main storyline, it's game over. So, everything I may want to do before ending the main storyline I should do it.

Now, I just got to New Vegas and I just started Ring-a-ding-ding and I have talked to Mr. House. Now I assume I have a bunch of missions to play before finishing the game and all, but I'd like you guys to tell me the name of a quest that when I see it I should be like "okay, this is a good time to stop doing main quest stuff and focus on DLC or radiant quests, etc.". Better if more than one or something, and why

    Thanks everyone in advance

Look I still love Fallout 3 and 4, but holy cow is New Vegas just better.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 01:05 PM PST

Fallout 4 was my first fallout and I really enjoy it still. I love a lot about it and when I played fallout 3 a couple months ago I fell in love with it too. I have a ton of time played on both games and I continue to do more on each of them because they are both incredibly solid and have a lot of great things about them.

I started New Vegas for the first time a few weeks ago and I'm honestly blown away. Just the sheer number of options as to what you can do compared to the other games is honestly just crazy. A ton of different ammo types, the ability to gamble. Character traits. Faction armor that actually lets you disguise yourself among them. All of this stuff is so cool and it's honestly crazy that no other (Bethesda published) fallout game has really had this sort of thing, at least to the extent of new Vegas. Not only that but there are so many different ways to approach this games story. I still haven't played a ton but where I am in the story I have like 6 different quests all to basically do the same thing but with slight variation when it comes to what actually happens and who I'm doing it for. I also love how morally grey it is. I love fallout 3 and the main quest in that game is mostly black and white. Brotherhood good, Enclave bad. Obviously there is a little bit more to it than that but that's just how it feels. In New Vegas basically everyone seems to have questionable intentions and something bad about them, to the point of where I think I might just side with Yes Man because then I actually get to ensure something good happens in the end.

It's just such a neat game and I'm really excited to put more time into it.

Edit: I know this is a pretty common opinion and post, but I wanted to talk about it because the other games are so good and I was truly shocked that new Vegas really was so much better and wanted to talk about it.

Railroad methods of “helping” synths are really weird.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 07:47 AM PST

So real life Underground Railroad was an organization that helped slaves to escape from the south into free states and Canada. This is where the Railroad gets its name.

So yes, they do liberate synths from the institute. But instead of helping synths escape somewhere they erase their memories, install fake personalities and let them loose into the commonwealth.

So it would be like instead of helping slaves escape real RR would slam their heads with like a club or something so they wouldn't remember anything, paint them white, lie about their life before and let loose back in the south. Oh, and slam to the head might make the person braindead.

I get it. fighting institute is hard and, unlike 18th century US in post apocalyptic world there might be nowhere to run, but is this really the best plan they could come up with?

Do you remember h2-22? He tells you that Railroad convinced him that wiping his memory is they best way to proceed. Isn't it suicide encouragment? That's illegal.

I get that all factions are supposed to be morally grey but god damn. They might as well just execute synths they "liberate" on the spot.

Questions about Fallout 1 before a first playthrough

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 04:28 PM PST

Just a few questions I've had while planning my character.

What is the difference between the doctor and first aid skills? I know doctor can heal broken limbs but as far as I'm aware they both can be used to heal hp without needing to rest 3 times. Does first aid heal more hp in general?

Despite my personal honour system of not looking things up for a game during a playthrough, I've heard through the grapevine (and this character creation video on youtube: https://youtu.be/464OM39NSh4) that there is a way to increase each primary stat by 1 in-game. Depending on my next questions I might rethink my build slightly. Is this in both Fallout 1 and 2, or is it limited to either of the games? Is this easy to find or is it reasonable to assume I won't find where I can do this on my own? And will I find this location early in the game or will I likely find it in the late game? I don't need directions to where I can do this, I'm just taking it into consideration while creating my character.

Thanks, and sorry the second paragraph was so long!

All major and minor factions in Fallout 4 based on morals

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 01:12 PM PST

Just started getting back into this game after over a year and thought it'd be fun to try and rank every faction based on their morals. Behold!

EDIT: including the brotherhood anywhere in this list was a mistake lol. Let me say this is all my opinion, and all in good fun.

EDIT: The BOS are fine with literally vaporizing dozens, if not hundreds, of sentient synths. They deserve their spot.

    1. Minute Men, 10/10 (Cosplayers that serve the greater good)

    2. The Railroad 8/10 (Secret agents that rescue synths. Their methods are sometimes questionable as far as memory wipes are concerned, but ultimately the synths choose whether or not they want this)

    3. Atom Cats 8/10 (Himbos. kinda dumb but have good hearts)

    4. Children of Atom 5/10 (EDITED: Depends on the sect; some just sit around sniffing toxic waste and some kill anyone they come across. Overall zealous but not necessarily violent)

    5. Gunners 4/10 (EDITED: far removed from the first three but not necessarily "bad", being only motivated by money. Perpetrated the Quincy massacre and can be very brutal depending on the contract)

    6. Triggermen 4/10 (still only motivated by money but are far less organized and more chaotic compared to the gunners. Scam, blackmail, and murder as opposed to being hired to do a job like the gunners)

    7. The Operators 4/10 (basically exactly the same as the triggermen but they got the drip. Enslave innocent people)

    8. Brotherhood of Steel 4/10 (Operating on righteous hatred of synths, mutants, and ghouls as well as having a manifest destiny sort of ideology when it comes to technology. Will do anything to further their cause and don't serve anyone but themselves regardless of any way they may incidentally help the commonwealth by killing raiders, ferals, or supermutants who get in their way)

    9. The Institute 3/10 (Is essentially amoral and regularly performs experiments on kidnapped commonwealth citizens and replaces them with synth spies. Enslaves synths and created the supermutants. Has more than enough capability to transform the commonwealth for the better but chooses to further it's chaos instead)

    10. Supermutants 3/10 (Big dumb beasts that hunt and kill any human they come across and turn them into meat piles. Evidently tons of people if we're going by the amount of gore bags found in their lairs. Believe they are the superior race. Not all supermutants are like this however, putting them just above the last few factions)

    11. Generic Raiders, Rust Devils, and Trappers 2/10 (Basically just crackhead pirates. They regularly steal, murder, and rape people for fun and use the bodies of innocent settlers as decorations in most of their lairs. Trappers eat the people as well, but have far more drip)

    12. The Pack 1/10 (Similar to generic raiders but also enslave people and feed them to wild animals (WTF?). HIDEOUS fashion sense)

    13. The Disciples 0/10 (Quite literally the definition of chaotic evil and ultra violent. Literally only motivated by extreme violence and are almost cartoonishly brutal. Torture people to death for fun on a regular basis. My personal least favorite faction, fuck these guys. Have drip tho)

[FNV] Pipboy not showing all items sometimes

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 02:19 AM PST

The bug/problem/feature is so hard to define... but here it is:
Sometimes, when I open my pipboy/container/trade not all of my weapons/armors will show up. For example, I have 5 different weapons, 1 of them equipped, but it only shows 3. The problem is fixed by reopening pipboy/container window/trading window, but shows up again after some time. I extrapolated that it may cause me to lose/forget some items, and is by far the only serious bug I encountered while playing my new modlist. What can it be, at least what mod could be causing the problem? Thanks in advance, here is my modlist:

I noticed the Fallout soundtrack sounds a lot like Aphex Twin?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 07:46 PM PST

This track from Fallout 1(also appears in New Vegas) sounds exactly like this track from Aphex Twin. At first I genuinely thought they were the same and that maybe Aphex worked on Fallout without me knowing it.

    Where’s the Navy?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 06:06 PM PST

Something that just hit me, and I am sad that I didn't realize sooner, what happened to the U.S. Navy? Enclave is the government, BoS is army/marine remnants, Gunners are similar, etc....

But I have never heard about what happened to the Navy. And this bothers me because that's the branch my father served in. Any ideas? Or is this an opportunity for an Enclave esc faction to be added to future games?

What would happen if Benny escapes from the tops with the platinum chip when you killed everyone at the fort?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 05:45 PM PST

Idea for firearm designs in the series.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 06:51 PM PST

So a big point of contention is whenever or not Fallout should have mostly real guns (like 2, Tactics and NV) or fictional ones mostly (Like 1)

I think a good half-way point would be to do what alot of games have started doing, take a real gun but swap parts around (admittingly it's for copyrright) but do so in a r/Cursedgunimages fashion, maybe not too unlike the gun customization in 4.

Get your not-Thompson that the previous owner forced an MP40-stock and the grip of a BAR to repair the broken wooden ones or an M16 with an AK stock, grab your unique long-range scope SKS that has some modern scope that's been taped/welded onto it since it wouldn't fit normally and an extended barrel that's been clumsily attached onto the end of the regular barrel.

Get an MP5K with an full-size rifle stock stuck on the back of it or an Beretta with a small punch dagger stuck on the front as a bayonet.

So they've all had bits of other guns cannibalized onto them in order to repair them/improve them since proper replacements/attachments were unavailable, with potential late-game fire arms simply being recently manufactured via repaired pre-war machinery "Normal" (but still fictionalized) guns that merely look like they were left in an attic too long.

Fallout 4 - Do loud generators make Settlers unhappy?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 06:09 PM PST

I keep reading that loud fuel generators make Settlers unhappy, however most wikis I checked don't mention that fact.

Does the small, medium, large, etc. generators actually make Settlers unhappy?

Fallout 4 has an overabundance of healing items

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 12:01 AM PST

4 gives you way too many things that heal you and they all heal you too much. I've ran out of stimpacks in the mid to late game of Fallout 3 and NV. I've had clutch moments where I've had to subsist on food items alone and during those moments I've had to actually think about how to approach that specific encounter. Not so much in 4, where I take a few stimpacks or open up my pipboy and eat a bit of my MASSIVE store of food (mostly just to cut down the amount of crap in my backpack). Occasionally in 4 I've been knocked flat on my ass by something and hammered the stimpack button like there was no tomorrow while my character slowly got up. I opened up my inventory the first time it happened, and saw that I still had about 76(!) stimpacks left at around level 30. In 3 I've had genuine shortages, due to bad planning. I've never had a shortage in 4 past maybe level 10. Once the stimpack ball gets rolling there is no running out. Even if I did run out I'd just move on to raiding my pantry and still have a shitload of food left over.
