To help me cope with 2020 I tried writing a 'short' story set in the Fallout universe. I just finished the 175,000 word first volume. I'd like to share at least a little of it, how/where can (should?) I do that?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 01:19 PM PST

I just typed out a post that came out looking like a mountain of text, never mind a wall, brevity is not my strong suit, clearly. Basically I, like lots of you I'm sure, have been struggling with my mental health lately, amplified massively by 2020. I tried writing a short story about a vault dweller trying and failing to escape, but even I realised how lame that was, so I started writing more, the more I wrote, the better I felt, finding a welcome distraction.

It's not good, I didn't think it would be given I've never done anything like this before, (frankly the idea of writing something still seems ludicrous) but if I can get an idea of how it reads, if it reads, to others I can hopefully improve it. I could post the blurb and prologue, that's about a thousand words, but it's not great, and not really the best representation, it's more an imitation than anything else. There's a couple of bits that are better, one event told from different points of view, the main and secondary protagonists, but that clocks in at over 5000 words, and I couldn't post all that without it it being overwhelming, to say the least.

If anyone has any ideas on sharing it like I don't know an imgur for text or something, or subs focused on this sort of thing, or any suggestions really please let me know

    Cheers

Edit - In the process of registering with ao3, although lots of that seems really specific stuff centred on existing characters and places, none of which I've wrote about, . Here's the blurb and prologue, if anyone has thoughts I'd love to hear them (names aren't final, I'm bad at naming things)

Fallout: Vault X tells the story of John, a vault dweller, who spent every day of his twenty five years underground, like his father, and his father before him. Proud to live in the last remaining bastion of humanity, all that had survived The Great War of the atomic age, hidden deep below the surface of the earth, toiling under brutal conditions, year after year, decade upon decade, to expand into the natural cave system the vault occupied, building for the future. However John knew what his forefathers did not, that everything he'd been taught was a lie.

After finishing school at the age of ten, John received his standard issue pipboy, the arm mounted, personal computer, worn by everyone in the vault, used to coordinate the relentless pace of expansion, needed to work as an apprentice, to learn the craft that would be his life's work, a noble calling to ensure a future for all that remained of the human race. A quirk of fate saw John equipped not with the crude, clunky, pipboy model his father wore, that nearly everyone else around him wore, his looked smaller, sleeker, finished in a jet black sheen, and capable of doing far more than its drab counterparts. John's childhood sweetheart, Rosie, the love of his life, the woman who wore a pipboy like his, showed him the secrets the devices held, her innate genius, her gift for reading and writing the computer code held within, the same operating system of the whole vault, had lead them to the truth. The vast, round door, the fraction of music her brilliance plucked from the air above ground, proof that life existed beyond rigid structure and twelve hour shifts, spent building space they didn't need, for a future they would never see. All they wanted was each other, and that meant leaving, venturing out into the unknown world, a decade later John achieved their dream, his freedom coming at the expense of hers, and a cost that may prove too steep a price.

The world above had been ravaged by atomic flames, yet life clung to its bones, the Red Valley had fared better than most in the century since the bombs fell, the clean water and rich soil protected by rolling hills, spared from direct strikes, for the most part. Life survived here, trees spawned from charred ground, misshapen, green leaves turned red, along with simple crops, grown wild at first, then cultivated by the survivors, scavengers of the old world, inventive, hardy people, determined to rebuild in the ruins of a world they never knew. In the decades that passed settlements emerged, spreading along the valley floor, reclaiming the pre-war remnants of the once industrialised heartland, salvaging the robotic wonders of a bygone age to build their walls, work their fields, to protect them in the dark of the wasteland, but such things are uncommon in this world, and the rarer something is, the greater its value, and the worth of pre-war technology had not gone unnoticed.

The last, real, power in this world rested in the mechanised hands of The Brotherhood of Steel. Forged from the mortally wounded old world military, The Brotherhood used its access to the armaments responsible for a conflict no one won to strike out into the wastes, equipping men and women with advanced armour, aerial transportation, high grade weaponry, accompanied by the training, strength, and will, to put them to use. They established chapters, set up outputs, far and wide, all dedicated to single purpose, to ensure the technology left abandoned by its long dead creators didn't fall into the wrong hands, namely, any hands that were not their own.

This is the world John escaped into, a place of horrors brought forth from atomic fire, a place where survival meant battling against the darkness, a war each day to get to the next, and war…war never changes.

    Prologue

War. War never changes. When humanity first mastered the power of the atom it had been to end war, and for a time, it did, but you cannot quell the fires of conflict by inventing new fuel for the flames. In the years that followed the first towering mushroom cloud, each nation sought the power of the atom for themselves, and before long they had it. Humanity finally had the means to end all wars, by ensuring no one would be left to fight them.

What once required a plane to be transported became smaller, then smaller still, until a single soldier could wield a power that no one person should have. However while some only saw a way to vanquish their enemies, others saw the true potential of the awesome power of the atom, the power to free the world from want, from toil, from hunger, from the darkness that stalked humanity for millennia. First came miniaturisation, computers that needed entire buildings to house became so small they could fit on a desk, or even on your arm. This, in turn, lead to revolutionary breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, robotics, no longer would humanity work the fields, or build houses, or even serve others, the machines would do it, and do it without question.

Humanity entered a new age, the age of the atom, an age of relative peace, uneasy, fragile, but peace all the same. No longer were wars fought on the beaches and in the towns, they were fought in secret, behind closed doors, in clandestine operations, deniable actions, in the theft of designs, in the shadows, yet it would not remain so for long, the fires of war cannot be contained, cannot be hidden, they spread, consuming all they touch. New threats rose, old adversaries became new friends, old friends became new enemies, all with the knowledge that they could wipe each other from the face of the earth in a matter of minutes. Fearing the worse some sought to survive the war to end all wars by moving underground, safe from the radiation, that if unleashed would poison the air, the water, and the earth itself. These vast underground labyrinths became known as vaults, a fitting name for something to keep safe the most precious thing humanity had, each other.

No one really knows how The Great War started, but when it did few were ready, fewer still survived it. Humanity went from billions, to millions, in mere minutes, scattered, hidden, and relegated to a wasteland, the carcass of the old world, fighting each and every day to survive. Humanity entered a new age, the age of survival. Survival is a war without end, and war….war never changes.

Fallout 3 Reilly's Rangers... remember them? The elite taskforce of the capital wasteland, highly specialized in rescue missions, defusing bombs and getting trapped on hotel roofs?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 04:54 AM PST

When you are talking with Reilly about Talon Company Merc, and she describes them as a bunch of murdering psychos or something of that sort, and then you proceed to tell her "Hmmm sounds like my kind of people"?

Do you remember, Boss? Ahh the good old days.

What's your favorite mission of all time?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 06:05 PM PST

Come Fly With Me (sending the ghouls in the rockets), Beyond the Beef (nom nom cannibals), The Velvet Curtain (point lookout Chinese spy ring) are some of my favorites.

I liked thinking about this question because for how much Fallout's plot has to do with some big mission that impacts the entire government and society of the universe, I think some of the funnest quests are the ones more off the beaten train.

Tried melee-focused, high strength PC in Fallout 3 for the first time ever and it is amazingly satisfying!

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 12:01 PM PST

Been playing the game since it came out, but being 11 or so at the time, I was too scared to fight up close with all the screaming supermutants and big bugs. So I focused on small guns and sneak attacks, put lots on repair skill too. Now, many years later I installed the game again after a couple of years, and got the idea to switch it up. Put a lot on strength, endurance stats, and I have been marching around the wasteland smacking raiders and slavers with the super-sledge for hours now. And I have no regrets! It is so much fun! Will truly never grow tired of this game.

I know we get fallout ideas all the time but hear me out.

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 03:06 AM PST

Before I start I'd like to mention that I do not live in New York or the surrounding area. My parents or anyone I know isn't from there. Now that that's been cleared up I'll begin.

I'd love to see a fallout in New York. The sense of scale would be awesome. Tall buildings, long roads, nice houses, all of that. Also something about the whole kinda feel of New York just screams fallout to me.

I was thinking that maybe it could take a more depressing feel to it. None of the hopefulness of fallout 4 and a bit of 76. I think it should mostly be sad which would truly add to the wasteland/fallout experience. Settlements won't be as advanced as some of the others in the series, and people will have sadder backstories.

For a time setting I think maybe 10 years after the bombs dropped would be great for that story. Everything is still kind of new. Things would slowly start growing while still maintaining a super run down and sad look. It could also add a sort of dependence on gas masks and other rad preventing aids. I think story wise it could work too which I'll get into later.

For the gameplay I'd like to see a lot of the fallout 76/3/NV style of gunplay comeback. I LOVE the durability feature. It feels super immersive to have to repair your weapons and armor. Another thing I'd like to see comeback from 76 is the scrapping for mods thing. It kinda makes sense to me. You'd learn more about the gun when you take it apart allowing you to learn more mods.

While I'd like a thirst and hunger bar I think it should be optional. Maybe into like a hard mode difficulty as well as survival. I think sleep should just be a part of all difficulties though. The player should be forced to find a place to sleep. It would make motels in large settlements finally have a use.

For companions, I think fallout 4 did it great but it could use some work. I think having all the companions be open to every gender/race is maybe a bit unrealistic so maybe certain characters could have preferences like in cyberpunk. I'd also like to see wayyy more dialogue options for companions. For example when you romance piper in FO4 she just says a lot of the same thing over and over again. There's nothing new after the romancing is done which is a bit boring.

Perhaps a marriage system would be a lot more fun for players looking for a deeper story/gameplay experience. Sounds weird but we could also have pregnancy be a part of it. While I mentioned a depressing feel, i think having to rebuild your hope is what fallout is really all about and kids and a settlement system are great ways to do that.

In terms of factions I think having more than four would be awesome. Each with their own ending of course. Some wouldn't require the murder of all other factions and some would.

Here's what I was thinking for factions. A mobster group, the enclave, raiders, an underground metro kind of faction, the hubologists, a cultist group and perhaps my favorite idea... a sort of developing minutemen faction. They wouldn't be called the minutemen but instead would go on to inspire the creation of the minutemen in the commonwealth of Boston.

For a story I would love to see the return of nukes. By far one of my favorite things from 76. There could be a kind of rouge ending where you put everyone out of their misery and blow everything up.

You could also discard of the nukes as a minutemen ending.

So many roads to take if nukes are thrown into the story.

Anyways it's 3:00am where I am and I'm tired. That's all I have for now. Please let me know if you like the idea or what you would change.

I'm on mobile so formatting might not be great. Thanks

Is there a reason why most of America doesn't also look like the Glowing Sea (minus the radiation) after the bombs drop?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 12:46 AM PST

I guess it's most likely 'cause it'd be boring if the worlds you explore in the games are too barren and empty and don't have any landmarks and stuff

But it's just that, for one example, you see the atom bomb completely annihilate Sanctuary Hills in that one Fallout 4 cinematic trailer, yet in-game Sanctuary doesn't look as destroyed as the cinematic would lead you to believe

What Radio Personalities Would You Like Adapted to Fallout?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 04:07 AM PST

We have sort of the FDR Fireside chat with Eden and Mr. Las Vegas with Mr. New Vegas, but I think it would be great to get more 1:1 satires. Like, Harvey Fierstein as a Wolfman Jack style ghoul or Matthew Lillard doing Casey Kasem.

The fifites and sixties was the golden age of radio, and I think it should be firmly embraced in future fallout games. While I guess 3 Dog is a close facsimile of the Wolfman, let's be honest, the mighty 3 Dog is a force unto himself.

So, I open the floor. What genres and personalities of radio host would you like to see? Morning talk show co-hosts? Rightwing AM propaganda? Baptists ranting about the end times? The Soupcan Harry Variety Hour?

I Made A Fallout-style Map of Southern New Mexico for a Fallout TTRPG Campaign

I love Southern New Mexico and loved exploring it when I was visiting family, so I figured it would make a good setting for a Fallout game, what with the Trinity Site, White Sands, Valley of the Fires, Roswell, Radium Springs, etc...

Let me know if I missed anything important! This is supposed to be south of Los Alamos and Albuquerque.

Heads up that Boone in Fallout: New Negas isn't the dps monster you think he is.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 10:20 PM PST

There is this myth I've seen go around that Boone deals more damage than the other companions. This is not true. There is pretty much nothing that actually points towards him actually outdamaging other companions unless you decide to take advantage of his 6 points in luck and try to do a crit build with him but that would only give him an extra 1-3% crit chance over other companions.

You could pick any companion with a tag skill on the gun skill and they'll end up doing the exact same damage as Boone with the same weapons excluding Cass cuz she literally has a perk that increases her damage with guns by 15%. Making her the true dps monster of New Vegas. (Though probably still one of my least favorite companions)

What you believe in is a lie. But at least Boone has a much better backstory than the others and gives you an op hat people use for busted crit builds.

Is Fallout 4 season pass worth it?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 01:28 AM PST

I've Fallout 4 since 2016 on PS4, finished it 4 times and really loving it. The season pass and game of the year edition are on sale for 20$ right now. Should i go for it?

Does the G.O.T.Y edition have a different trophy list? Witcher 3 base game has trophy list and it's complete edition has another trophy list (same trophies but you can get 2 platinums)

Also what about Skyrim V? Is it like Fallout 4? I've never gave it a try. Maybe i should consider getting Fallout 4 & Skyrim Bundle.

    Thanks in Advance.
