They are ridiculous, and next time they crash a vertibird into me out of nowhere I am gonna lose my shit! Down with the Prydwyn (sp?). I wish there was a way to go against them that diddn't include siding with the Institute. Wait though.... Is there?

Operation Anchorage may be better than you think if you take a more literal look at it

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 04:52 PM PST

There will be spoilers about Operation Anchorage so if you want to avoid those I recommend avoiding this post

On mobile so if the formatting is weird I apologize

    Introduction

Now hear me out before you pass judgement. I understand that for many this is an unpopular opinion but I think if you come into this with an open mind you'll agree with me that for what it is, Anchorage does its job very well.

So let's start with that. What is Operation Anchorage? It's a simulation designed to train United States soldiers in combat against the Chinese in Anchorage, Alaska. The simulation recreates the battle to take back Alaska from Chinese invaders. It uses the same technology Stanislaus Braun uses in Tranquility Lane in Vault 112. The actual simulation pod is referred to as a Visiontron in the games concept art and can also be called an immersion recliner.

So now that we know what the DLC is in the most literal sense, what exactly does that translate to in gameplay? Well you sit down in the immersion recliner and the simulation begins to load. Once it finishes loading you appear on a frozen mountainside in Alaska. You'll have to fight your way through Chinese soldiers before reaching an American camp. Once there you can cobble together a strike team to help reclaim points of interest and dispatch Chinese soldiers. It culminates with a huge US victory and the death of a Chinese General.

The most complained about features of the DLC seem to be: 1. There is little to no story or character interaction 2. The DLC is relatively quick to complete 3. The rewards gained for completing the DLC make the player nearly unstoppable considering that there is no barrier to start the DLC

For the purpose of this post I will be discussing points 1 and 2 primarily. I'm talking about the DLC's presentation and narrative more than it's rewards and post-completion effects.

Point 1 - Story and Characters

A complaint often seen about Operation Anchorage is the lackluster story and the shallow characters. I propose the idea that, canonically, the DLC shouldn't have a good story.

Consider this: the simulation was designed to recreate the battle of Anchorage, Alaska. Not the story of the soldiers. Not the tale of the civilians or government. Just the battle.

So the simulation does its job just fine. Why would the programmers and writers (in America at the time not referring to Bethesda) add fleshed out dialogue to what is basically a training sim for American soldiers? The soldiers already know what's going on, they just need to actual combat experience. The simulation isn't designed for some kid to use 200 years after nuclear oblivion, it's meant for infantry in the US armed forces.

Point 1.5 - The World That Made It

Operation Anchorage gives brilliant insight into the mindset of America during the time this simulation was made. It shows how the company that made the sim and the military consultant they referred to both had extreme prejudices and complete cultural ignorance towards the Chinese population.

This makes sense, in a way. America was at war with China and if you respected or learned about their culture it was likely you would be socially ostracized or even thought of as a loyalist to the Communist party in China.

The Fallout Wikia mentions that despite the Chinese soldiers speaking Mandarin, it's so warbled and poorly enunciated that even a native speaker likely wouldn't understand any of it. This reflected one of two things:

    A. There were no Chinese voice actors, seeing as how most Chinese people were probably put into internment camps or not allowed in on military projects

    Or

    B. The creators of the sim cared so little about the language and society of China that they threw in a lazy attempt at Mandarin solely for the purpose of Immersion. This would work since most American soldiers probably either wouldn't care or wouldn't know any better

The depiction of the Chinese General, Jingwei, was very openly a stereotypical Chinese general. So obsessed with honor that he would kill himself over death to an enemy. General Jingwei can be convinced in a single sentence from the enemy to give up and run himself through with his sword. The best part? You only need at least a Charisma of 4 and a Speech of 90 to have a 100% chance to succeed in this speech check. You don't even have to be a charismatic person to convince him to commit suicide.

Small additions like these help paint a large picture that shows how backwards America's perception of China was during this time period. Situations like with General Jingwei border on just being complete propaganda.

Point 2 - Time to Complete

It's true that the simulation is brief. It takes maybe an hour or two if you don't rush. The thing is, that makes sense if you consider that state America was in during this conflict.

America was licking its wounds and had just introduced an entirely new technology, T-51b Power Armor, into play. It's soldiers were demoralized and adapting to new strategies and technologies. So what better remediation to that than an uplifting success story that is not only beneficial for training but also quick to complete?

The idea wasn't for this to be a one a done if you ask me. The likely plan was for soldiers to complete the simulation a few times in between their traditional training. Then they could head out to the front lines not only with conventional practice but also with actual reference to what war is like. It also gave soldiers insight and real looks into Chinese technology like Chimera Tanks and Crimson Dragoons - things the soldiers would otherwise have only heard about.

The simulation was able to quickly be completed which was ideal for its market. The US needed soldiers for the war and VSS (Virtual Strategic Solutions Inc.) offered the means to train those soldiers and give them combat readiness.

    In Conclusion

While I'm not going to say you should like Operation Anchorage, as it's all subjective, I'm proposing maybe the DLC is better than you thought. It does its job as a quick, easy to use, and realistic simulation of the battle of Anchorage, Alaska.

P.S. I use realistic in the most literal sense since many of the events and characters portrayed seem inaccurate or dramatized

P.P.S. I'm not saying this DLC translates to fun necessarily. I'm just saying that for what it is canonically speaking it is very well done and makes sense given the game world at the time the sim was made

TL;DR Operation Anchorage is good, can't wait for the downvotes

Just realized why Father in the Nuclear Family quest thumbnail looked exactly like Dr. Light from Megaman (minor spoilers)

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 07:50 AM PST

Dr. Light was the creator of Megaman and all the bosses on the game. The titular character was even built to be his son.

Father, while not creator, was the source of all Gen 3 synths. He's treated like a father by them.

How useful is the Survival Skill in New Vegas?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 07:40 AM PST

Now I never played hardcore mode and based on the new mechanics on hardcore, Survival might actually be useful there.

But in the vanilla game mode, I feel like it's just there for roleplaying purposes because healing from food is so measly and making special food by investing points in survival and gathering all resources is just not worth it for the reward of eating a special food. As opposed to just investing in medicine and using stimpaks for more HP heal..

I redrew one of the G.O.A.T posters from Fallout 4 to be printed as actual poster

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:18 AM PST

    Original

    My Version

You can download it in full resolution here.

If you want to modify it further, you can download the psd file here.

I know it would have been better to create this as svg, but since I have no experience with vector graphics, I chose not to.

The resolution is quite large, probably larger than necessary, but better too large than too small.

It's not perfect, some lines are a bit jittery (guess the jet made me jittery), but if you don't print it much larger than 60x40, you won't notice.

    Hope you like it :)

Which Fallout faction would realistically win if they went on an all out war?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 04:42 PM PST

The NCR with their population? BoS with their high tech gear? Synths? Institute? An army of Easy Pete's?

Fallout 4 - What Is the Most Fun (Funnest?) Faction to Stick With Until Endgame?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 09:40 PM PST

I dont care how hard or easy it is, I just want to know what faction has the most fun quests and ending to the game. I was originally going to stick with the BoS, solely because I want to revive Liberty Prime and see a giant robot destroying synths. Which one did you guys find enjoyable?

Is there a full good karma way to play through New Vegas?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 11:05 PM PST

I just finished the main BOS quests and got Hardin as elder, but now I am faced with BoS being good karma, but House wanting them to be dead, but house is also good karma. Am I really forced to do evil to finish the main quest line?

I actually love what they did with the Brotherhood in Fallout 4. They're the EXACT same as Fallout 3, but because their leader is kind of a dick to you, suddenly everyone isn't so okay with their arguably fascist behaviors.

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 05:47 PM PST

    Todd, you brilliant sonuvabitch.

Everyone on Reddit whines about Elder Maxson, and praises Lyons. Lyons, while nicer, still led the Brotherhood generally the same. He just "hElPeD tHe PeOpLe".

BoS soldiers straight up still considered anyone who was 'less than human' inferior, like ghouls, and even after Project Purity was activated, they didn't bother to get any water to underworld. plus they still didn't like outsiders.

COULD IT BE a allegory of how people are more accepting of Authoritarianism when you're not the target? No lol, but it still kinda works. I still side with them most playthroughs lmao

    Where should I start?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 06:49 PM PST

So, for some reason despite me being a big.fan of open world RPG games I've never really played fallout. I very briefly played Fallout 3 once. Anyway I've decided I want to play either Fallout: NV or 3. Which do y'all think is better/which would you recommend?

Who do you think is the best leader out of the west coast fallout games (includes Fallout 1, Fallout 2, and Fallout New Vegas)?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:29 PM PST

I think that the best Leader is Mr. House because he saved the Vegas strip. He then also made a deal with the NCR saving Vegas from an invasion. He isn't the most morally right or morally correct leader, but he allows the people in freeside and westside to live their own life. He also has enough power for Vegas to thrive for a long time. His army of Securitrons van protect Vegas from any attack at any time. Please share your thoughts.

The Next Fallout games better have Perks calling back to the past Player Characters

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 02:45 PM PST

For Example (I have shit perk design):

Vault Dweller: Removes Rads from Pre-war food and increases their Healing.

Chosen One: Your Companions deal more damage and have more health the more they idolize you.

Lone Wanderer: Same as Fallout 4, but lets you bring the Dog this time.

The Courier: You take reduced Limb Damage (especially the head).

The Sole Survivor: At you less than 50% Health you gain a chance to dodge non-explosive damage which increases the lower your health is.

Edit: The Seventy-Sixer: Gain more Rad Resistance.

Fallout 4 Nuka-World DLC question (minor spoilers)

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:33 AM PST

I looked up the best order to do the FO4 DLC in and one intriguing answer I found was to do the Nuka-World DLC before anything else. Like even before you go to Concord.

The Role Playing premise is that you wake up to a changed world and a dead wife and kidnapped child and lose your mind. You go to Nuka-World and do all the raider-centric quests and then come back tot he Commonwealth and begin a "Redemption Story" arch.

Having never played the DLCs I was intrigued by this idea and promptly started a new character and made my way to the Nuka-World train ASAP. And as soon as I got there at level 4 or so I realized every enemy was far more powerful than I was and I got completely devastated. Then I realized the suggested level for the DLC is 30. So to anyone who has done the "Nuka-World before Concord" thing: how in the heck did you do it? How did you get to level 30-ish without first going to Concord?

Can’t warn Desdemona during “End of the Line”?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 12:07 PM PST

I've been playing the Institute during this run but undermined every task they gave me (namely killing every synth they want to recover), and when End of the Line started I told Father they were allies and he asked me to go kill Desdemona. Everywhere I look says either the synth from Underground, Undercover should show up at this point (haven't seen or talked to him at all yet), or that I should be able to tell Desdemona the Institute's plan. I can't do that - she's stuck on "We've heard some disturbing reports" and just tells me to leave. I haven't done ANY of the Railroad quests aside from meeting them, but nowhere online does it say why I'm not able to save the Railroad at this point.

    Any help?
