Finding Pipe Pistols in Every Safe Really Salts My Apples

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 09:34 AM PST

I find it really immersion breaking to dig through a ruined building untouched by humans since before the war, only to find that apparently the CEO of that company had a hobby of making illegal firearms out of literal trash. It doesn't even make sense for safes that are in use most of the time. If it belongs to a non-combat heavy NPC then it makes sense, but when I clear out a gunner camp where everyone has shotguns and combat rifles, why do they feel the need seal up a rickety pea shooter? I'm sure there's a mod for this, but it seems like a pretty obvious oversight on Bethesda's part. I feel like anywhere more than 5 minutes from Concord shouldn't even have pipe pistols on the drop table (without good reason like the non-combatant NPC situation above). It doesn't even provide anything mechanically. Have you EVER actually taken one of those pipe pistols you found in a safe past Concord with the intention of using it? For pre-war safes the obvious choice would be 10mm pistols, equally useless to find past the early game, but at least they make sense to find in that context.

Why do other Fallout fans hate 76 so much?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 02:35 AM PST

I've played most of the fallouts 1, 3, NV, 4 and 76 and it's not all that bad. it used to be really bad when it first came out yes but with wastelanders it's pretty good now but I still hear so much hate behind it why?

I have over 900 hours logged in Fallout 4 and I just realized today you could access your own memories in the memory den

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 01:44 PM PST

I have always played through the game pretty linearly and aligned with the Minutemen until the end, but this time I ignored everything and went straight to the railroad. I had no idea you could access your own memories of Shawn's kidnapping in the Memory Den, and that it would redirect you to Nick Valentine in Diamond City! Can't believe there was something new for me to discover in this game.

Reminder that Bethesda saved the entire Franchise

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 08:24 PM PST

Seriously, people give Bethesda shit, but before Bethesda made Fallout 3 in it's own style, the last fallout game was Brotherhood of Steel. People say that 76 is the worst, but that's because before Bethesda saved it Fallout had gotten so bad that the last game has been banished from all thought or memory forever.

What Do You Think Would Most Likely Be Currency Where You Live?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 06:46 PM PST

I know there is that part of all of us fans of the series that would like to think that it would be good ole' bottle caps. And maybe enough of us Fallout fans would survive and agree to use caps as our currency. Since we are understand its worth more or less, though we might need to add like the can pull tabs and plastic caps to the pool. At the same value for simplicity sake.

But I was just wondering what you think would be your non-cap currency where you live. I live in Indiana on the Ohio River. And after giving serious thought over a few days. I would think in my town and its surrounding area, mine/ours would be salt. (Insert goofy salty joke here)

Its rare, but not unheard of. We all agree is has uses for food, either for flavor or storing food longer, and it doesn't really go bad. And It would be common enough to Prospect for, or if you were really risky you could harvest from the sea. Assuming you could make the trips of course. But it wouldn't be super easy to 'make' so it would still retain value.

So just wanted to get the community thought on this idea. Would also love to hear what you think would be the case for you. Also doesn't have to be America only, all over the world would be interesting to think about also. Have a great day/night and be safe and happy!

Am I forgetting something, or have we never seen evidence of a ghoul that's GOING feral?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 06:10 PM PST

It just kind of randomly occurred to me that, as far as I'm aware, there's never actually been any sign of a ghoul that's like, actually deteriorating. It's always completely one or the other, totally fine or completely animalistic, and that just seems...

It seems really weird, doesn't it?? Like, I don't know if it's just because they don't want to cement any facts about what makes ferals happen for...some reason, but like...it's such an obvious space to try to tap.

A settlement where an important member has recently turned Feral, and they have to deal with them being gone. Maybe they're being preserved in a locked home, maybe nobody has the courage to put them down and the player character has the option to, maybe they all try to pretend the ghoul is fine by keeping them fed and letting them wander?

A quest to find someone that's been trapped for a long time, and when you get there they're still sane but obviously deteriorated, not quite all there but still capable of holding a conversation and asking for your help.

A companion who might slip into the feral mindset during combat or something, maybe their class quest is helping them overcome that deterioration, I don't know.

Just...how do you have something like this and NEVER explore it? I'd never thought of it before, but it seems so weird to me now. The closest thing I know of is Lily in FNV, but obviously she's not quite the same thing.

    Ronnie Shaw sitting forever

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 02:32 AM PST

In Fallout 4 during the "Old Guns" quest after the fight with Sarge, Ronnie Shaw won't get up after being knocked down. I waited 10 minutes and she still won't get up. I try to give her a stimpak but since she isn't available as a companion, I can't give her one. I try to talk to her but she says "Let me get this gate open" or she complains about what the basement smells like. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Something that Fallout 4's dialogue system did right, and I hope to see in future games

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 03:15 PM PST

(minor spoilers for Fallout 4 sidequests and BoS Critical Path)

I am currently doing a survival pacifist run in Fallout 4 (it's progressing quite slowly, as you can probably guess) and yesterday I completed the Human Error quest. Something I had never noticed before is that if the Sole Survivor finds out about the compound by yellow-check tricking Talia Mcgovern and/or Penny Fitzgerald (or both, as my pacifist SS, "Smiley") into revealing information (or attempting to, but failing), the mayor (Jacob Ordan) will confront the player on the way out.

If the player passes an orange difficulty speech-check in that dialogue, to create a "compromise", Jacob will tell the Compound to expect the SS. In this instance, upon arrival (at least, without Honest Dan, I don't know what happens if he comes too) Manny will offer three possible nonviolent ways of entering the compound, not one, explicitly because of Orden calling ahead. One orange, one yellow, and one red.

The thing is, the (one) option you usually get is red difficulty, (fun fact: if you haven't started the Human Error quest, and you just blunder in randomly, this option lets you leave peacefully, but not speak to the Doctor). So, using the following sources, and assuming a Charisma of 6 (average Charisma for an even SPECIAL distribution, plus one very common suit or dress and hat):

    https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Charisma#Effect_on_Speech

Probability of getting into the compound peacefully under normal circumstances, 1 red speech check:

    (7*15)-65 = 40% Pretty bad odds!

Probability of getting into the compound peacefully if you have played "Human Error" consistently as a diplomatic character, means passing an orange speech check, then a final yellow one.

    A: Odds of passing Orden's orange check = (7*15)-50 = 55%

    B: Odds of passing Manny's yellow check = (7*15)-35 = 80%

Fallout 4 does this a lot, where choosing specific options at specific points in the narrative can make future speech checks easier. Blind Betrayal is another example, where depending on how you spoke to Elder Maxson at the beginning of the quest, the checks to save Danse could be red, orange, yellow, or even non-checks (meaning automatic pass even at 1 charisma).

I prefer this dynamic system to the concept of a strict unchanging barrier represented by a skill check percentage. It makes the game feel more responsive to the choices made thus far, without trivialising build advantages (charismatic characters have more leeway to act like jerks and still get what they want, but everyone else has to really think before speaking).

    My Opinion On Bethesda

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 07:48 PM PST

I like Bethesda but I don't think they understand Fallout. That's my conclusion. Are they a bad company? No. I know for a fact that they are able to make good games, (Wolfenstein 2, Doom,Skyrim) but they don't understand what makes Fallout so special. Fallout 1,2, and New Vegas had a kind of love and warmth put into them that Bethesda can't seem to replicate. Overall, I like Bethesda but now that Microsoft owns them they should maybe turn Fallout over to Obsidian.

Was Fallout shelter a cash grab?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 04:12 AM PST

The Fallout franchise is huge, one of the biggest franchises' in gaming history and in June 2015 Behaviour Interactive and, of course, Bethesda created Fallout Shelter, a game that I can't lie and say I've played much of but I was looking at some reviews and steam gave it a 9/10 Google play gave it a 4.6/5, Apple store gave it 4.8/5 and of course these reviews are from fans. A game that I merely passed upon as a cash grab actually seemed to draw somewhat of an astonishingly good reception. I haven't done much research but from the research I have done it seems as if there hasn't been an update since 2015, please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, the game just seems.... abandoned, despite its great reviews and that makes me wonder if it was just a quick cash grab, draw some attention in from Fallout fans then dump it a year or so on. The thing that confuses me the most is that it was, well I guess kind of fun, there wasn't a lot too it but as a mobile game it could have really competed to be at the top but I haven't heard from anyone about it in so long. I'd love to hear everyone's opinion and maybe the opinions of people who still play it.

Thing I learned in Psych that's relevant to game design: Overjustification

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 12:54 PM PST

So there's this principle in Psych called Overjustification in which if you take something inherently fun/rewarding/satisfying, like going on fun quests and fighting enemies and then add an external reward, like caps and levels and weapons, people start enjoying it less intrinsically, and will enjoy it a lot less than before if you then take away the external reward.

It's actually relevant to some issues in game design, especially stuff like level caps, where, once you've hit the level cap and no longer get any reward from quests, they're less satisfying than they were before, because you've been conditioned to do them for that reward. Even if it was a fun quest, you're still getting hit by that effect because of Psychology. I personally do notice it in New Vegas, where once I hit level 50 I'm like, okay time to wrap this playthrough up.

I think it's an interesting thing to consider in debates over whether there should be a level cap. Of course, you can still get around it if quests tend to have their own rewards, like neat gear or unique perks, like Ant Might/Sight in 3, but it is an issue.

Estimated buying power of a cap

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 06:32 PM PST

This is mainly in Fallout 4 as I'm using those prices.

Preface: We all know that inflation was rampant, as we can see magazines and other such books being sold for anywhere between $30-$60, and gas or "coolant" prices being well into the 100s of dollars. With that being said, gold and silver have always been a solid basis for an economy before the implementation of the "Petrol Dollar" which was established in 1973. So we can assume that the US was still on the Gold Standard. However, with the proliferation of the usage of Uranium, as can be extrapolated by the song "Uranium Fever" where it is stated that "Uranium is worth more than gold" it is possible that the US had moved from the Gold Standard to a Uranium Standard. All of these will be taken into account. So we will have 4 possibilities, with a Gold Economy, a "Petrol" Economy (current), and a Uranium Economy.

    GOLD:

the gold prince in Fallout 4 is... odd. With one salvaged unit being worth 9 caps, and a shipment of 25 being worth 45 per unit. If we were to subtract 15% from the shipment (markup cost/retail price) we would get ~38. Average the two together and we get 23.5 or for simplicity 24 caps per unit. A unit of gold is about .1lbs so we get the cost of a pound at 240 caps.

The price of a pound of gold in the US varies on the purity of the metal. As I doubt we are dealing with pure gold, I will say that the gold in fallout is 6K or 25% pure. that would bring the price of a pound of gold to $6,822. (using https://meltvalue.com/gold)

    If we do the math

    6882/240 = 28.675

So we come One Cap having the buying power of $28.68 IF we use the gold standard.

For some more numbers in order to better pin the number down, I will also be taking into account silver. Silver sells for 6 caps per unit, and 750 for a shipment of 25. Using the same methodology for gold, we come to 18 caps per unit and 180 for a pound. For IRL silver, using 75% purity, as the US standard for silver is around 82% and I will take into account impurities that may come from refinement. 1lb of silver is $282.8

    Math time

    282.8/180 = ~$1.57 per cap.

If we average those two out we get

    1cap = $15.1225 (USD 2020)

    PETROL:

This is going to be more difficult. Considering there is no centralized banking in Fallout. So this might be impossible to determine. However, we can use analogs to see the prices of goods in 2077, and by using those we can extrapolate their buying power. It should also be noted that there are certain things that may have not retained their value. For instance, a bottle of water would be worth more than a coat in the wastelands due to it being rarer and more in demand. I think if we use arms we may be able to gain an idea of the value of a cap.

The Assult Rife, being a prewar weapon the M199. Is an obvious analog for the real M16. They both fire 5.56 ammo and are part of the same family.

So an M16 is priced at $673 for the government to buy, while a citizen may have to pay upwards of 30K. I will be using the $673 price as this is closer to its actual worth, without needing tax stamps and licenses to own.

The M199 it worth around 182 caps.

    Doing the math

    673/182 = 3.69(nice)

    Using the analog of ammo...

Using a box of Winchester 5.56, we can see that a box of 20 is being sold for $15 (On sale for 13 at https://www.sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore.com/category.cfm/sportsman/5.56-x-45-mm-nato-ammunition-for-sale if anyone is interested.) So we can take a box of fallout ammo for 60 caps. We can come to an IRL round for 70cents and a fallout round for 2 caps.

    .7/2= 1 cap is 35cents

    Averaging them out we get

    1 cap = $2.02

    Uranium:

After doing some research I realized that it would be impossible for me to try and figure out the price of uranium as it was much more valuable than it ever had been today. For Uranium to be true "Worth more than gold" it would need to increase in value over 20 times as a pound of uranium is around $250 while "trash gold" or 6k gold is worth $6882. Because of this glaring discrepancy, I cannot make an educated or confident estimation.

    Conclusion

Going off of a gold standard, we can assume that a Cap has the same buying power as ~$15 today, which would make the impoverished conditions much more believable as the price of food is extremely expensive. And in a "petrol" economy, we can see a Cap is roughly $2.

That's it. If you have anything to add please do. I am not an economist or currency speculator. So if I made any glaring mistake please let me know with all the wrath and fury you can. Thank you.
