What is wrong with the scientists at big MT?

Obviously they're all geniuses, yet they all have some extremely weird peculiarities like forgetting basic grammar rules (ex: saying unpeculiar instead of in-peculiar) and thinking that phalanges are penises instead of toes and fingers. They seem to have gone somewhat insane but I'm not sure why. If it is purely due to isolation, why are characters like Dean Domino relatively sane despite lacking human interaction for 200+ years?

I suppose the NCR, but they're fairly focused on one area other than entire states.
