A shower thought about the Service Rifle Posted: 11 Oct 2019 08:18 AM PDT Hello everyone. I am a military history nerd and had a quick thought this morning that I wanted to share with you all. I hope you find it interesting. One of the iconic weapons of New Vegas is the NCR's Service Rifle, clearly modeled after the M16A1, America's real "service rifle" since the 1960s. The Service Rifle's design works in a lot of different ways. It is a great symbol for the NCR, identifying them as the ones "carrying on the torch" of pre-War America through their use of America's most recognizable firearm (if not most recognizable symbol) and simultaneously linking their legacy to American soldiers of a particular pre-War era. The real service rifle was carried by conscripts sent off to a foreign country to fight and die for nebulous political aims-- a perfect parallel for the experience of NCR troops in New Vegas. Lastly, in the game and real life, it fires an intermediate 5.56mm round-- more on that later. (Oh, and the wooden furniture adds cool post-apocalyptic flair.) Now, it is unclear whether or not America fought in Vietnam in the Fallout universe. Most of the evidence comes from Fallout: Tactics which I choose to ignore. However just by looking at the timeline it appears that America adopted the "commonwealth" system in 1969. America could barely fight a "police action" in Vietnam as a unified country in that year, let alone on the path to becoming 13 separate ones. Although this increased factionalism was matched with an equal increase in jingoism and "defense" spending, the timeline also purports a lack of global (hot) conflict until the Sino-American War of the 2060s. This all suggests to me that America did not fight in Vietnam. Why does this matter? In the 1950s, military theorists believed that on the nuclear battlefield, a soldier's individual weapon would be less relevant than the myriad factors that go into keeping him alive and putting him in the right place to fight. There was an equal emphasis on producing a large number of good-enough weapons right then so as to be prepared for this probably nuclear and potentially imminent World War III, requiring an even greater production of ammunition. Additionally, infantry tactics of the time were largely based around supporting machine guns firing full-sized rifle rounds; an infantry rifle that also used this ammunition greatly simplified logistics at every level, from the factory to the truck. Combined these factors led to the development of battle rifles like the M14 and FN FAL and left little motivation to develop smaller/lighter bullets. In other words, I do not think the M16A1 would have been developed/fielded in the Fallout universe without the impetus of the Vietnam War-- we would've just stuck with something preexisting in a bigger caliber. This is further supported in the Operation Anchorage simulation seen in Fallout 3, where the standard service rifle is the R91, a battle rifle similar to the FN FAL. Clearly as late as 2070 frontline troops were being issued full-caliber battle rifles. This agrees with the game's 1950s-era logic and also makes some sense in its alternate future. Although energy weapons exist they are not particularly common, and given the proliferation of body armor, powered armor, and armored robots, sometimes you just need a big-ass bullet (and most times it will do you just fine). But here is my shower thought: I think that both Bethesda and Obsidian were wrong in their choice of weapon. The standard "Service Rifle" of the post-apocalypse shouldn't literally be the M16A1, for the reasons described. It also shouldn't be an FN FAL derivative, because the US pointedly avoided adopting this weapon in favor of their own (inferior) M14 rifle to keep things "in-house" (to make a long story short). But there is a middle ground, a battle rifle developed in the 1950s for the American military, whose development directly led to the creation of the one of the most successful weapons of all time, and which sports the same distinctive silhouette as its successor... The ArmaLite AR-10, bearing a striking appearance to the Service Rifle of the NCR and complete with something like "wood" furniture! This rifle preserves all of the symbolism of the existing Service Rifle with the benefit of a more period-appropriate caliber. It is also an American weapon which makes way more sense than some janky-looking FN FAL knockoff in the R91. My headcanon is that all American soldiers should have been equipped with a Service Rifle (in 7.62mm!) like that fielded by the NCR. It makes perfect sense for America in the Fallout universe to have moved away from the M14 over a hundred years of alternate future to a new weapon; it also makes perfect sense for that weapon to be a "developed in a cynical imagining of a stagnated retro future"-version of the M16. All of the space-age furnishings and appearance with none of the actual developments made since the 1960s. As a closing thought, I think that the devs were definitely aware of the AR-10 and the fact that it was chambered in a larger caliber than they chose for the game. There is no way they didn't find it when searching for "wood furniture M16" and this game models firearms and calibers pretty well. Ultimately, I think using 5.56mm came down to game design: they needed an intermediate caliber weapon for the mid-game that could be acquired without jumping through too many hoops and the M16A1 fit that bill perfectly (with a few tweaks like the wooden stock). But the same way the Varmint Rifle should have been .22 caliber, I think the Service Rifle should've been 7.62mm, tracing its lineage to the AR-10 instead of the M16. Thanks for reading! Posted: 10 Oct 2019 10:59 PM PDT So i was going around carrying everything i had stolen from the silver rush. I sold everything and i talked to boone. Boone talked about killing caesar. Then we got to the topic of bitter springs. I did the guest with boone and i almost started crying when he said something along the lines of "when you came to novac i knew i was supposed to go with you" i was so emotional!!! Boone is easily my favorite companion. [link] [comments]

Posted: 11 Oct 2019 03:20 AM PDT Recently I started a new F:NV playthrough and right now I'm in Camp Searchlight, talking to the ghoulified Private Kyle Edwards. Yet I was wondering something, because he always tells you that ghouls don't belong to/in the NCR, then why are there ghouls still in the NCR as NCR Ranger Veterans? Or is it that he only means soldiers? But if so, then why? [link] [comments]

Completing "Armed For Bear" with finality Posted: 11 Oct 2019 12:27 AM PDT So I'm in the middle of my so-called personally canonical playthrough of New Vegas -- the one I had set aside as my so-called "final" playthrough, even though I've made that pledge three times now. The one where I pick Logan's Loophole, with all of its many negatives, chiefly because of the implied immortality. (But also because it's a way of doubling the duration of Implant GRX.) As always, I play with an eye to doing every single thing the game has to offer. In that respect, the GRA challenges are a godsend because in many ways they were calculated to force the kind of painstaking play I really enjoy. Kill 15 NCR officers with specific weapons? Given that I like to manipulate the world into Idolizing me despite my many transgressions, this by itself is quite a challenge. I've decided to complete this challenge with style. I never side with NCR anyway. For starters, the usual tricks apply: I favor targeting the officers which disappear from the game, followed by the officers who have annoying personalities, followed largely by the Comm Officers since they're generally unimportant. The interesting part will be my final two targets. I mentioned NPCs who disappear, and/or who are annoying. At the very top of that list is none other than Colonel Cassandra Moore, the entity who is personally responsible for keeping the NCR option from being sin-free. She wants the player to murder Mr. House. She wants the player to massacre the Great Khans -- and if you manage not to do that, you still have to assassinate their amiable leader (and take an unavoidable reputation hit in the bargain). And she's an insufferable b****. Also, if you fail the NCR quest line, she disappears from the game. But here's the trick. If you kill her -- and there's no getting around this -- the entire NCR becomes permanently hostile. You can't even finagle to get a pardon for this. It won't work. In other words, the entire NCR system is tied to the existence and whims of this one woman, and her wish -- the wish to roll over the locals and kill anyone who gets in the way -- is their command. She has to go. So she's number 14, right before the Battle of Hoover Dam. Number 15 is, of course, General Lee Oliver, whom you meet right before completing the game. Now, with all of that having been said, at least in the case of Armed For Bear, it is possible to finish that challenge without making enemies of the NCR. Against All Tyrants? You have to kill 10 targets, from an eligible list of like 15. And Caesar can't be one of those because he has to be killed with a knife for a separate challenge. Yeah. Once you do this, you're fully committed to Legion genocide, no two ways about it. [link] [comments]
Unarmed - limb damage multiplier Posted: 10 Oct 2019 10:27 PM PDT When I hit enemy in the leg/arm inside VATS with Fist of Rawr using Cross attack, how do the two limb damage multipliers interact? The cross is 2.5x limb DMG and Rawr is 2x. Does that mean it will deal 4.5x damage? Also, does this multiplier works on base damage only or does it affect crits too? And what about sneak attacks? Posted: 10 Oct 2019 09:28 PM PDT After completing Old School Ghoul the game freezes and I can't move or open the pipboy. I can open the pause menu but can't save, only load. I have zero clue why this is happening and don't see it listed on the wiki. [link] [comments]
