Dear mods, can we please allow memes again? This place is getting stale.

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 01:46 PM PDT

Elders of the Brotherhood, hear my plea. I love Fallout, just like you and many others here. But this sub is getting repetitive. It's mostly new fans coming in and making the same old observations and arguments. Not to mention the ever popular "Should I play Fallout X or Y" post. While we're still pretty big, I've seen this sub's numbers dwindle over the years. I feel like this has been an ongoing trend since the decline of Fallout 76.

I've been around long enough to remember the state of this sub before Fallout 4, and for some reason that game changed a lot of the rules. Why were memes even banned in the first place? Like I've said before, they're funny and start conversation on their own. I know we're supposed to be a discussion subreddit, but we don't need only text posts for that.

Plus, the few dedicated Fallout meme subs don't have large enough subscriber bases to support themselves. Most Fallout fans would expect to find that kind of content here. Subs with low subscriber counts aren't seen as legitimately as bigger ones, but then when people come to the biggest Fallout sub, it's just a bunch of boring plain text of Fallout nerds arguing which is better? Dogmeat 1 or Dogmeat 2?

I'm just making a suggestion, as I can see the state of this sub going nowhere but downhill until a new game comes out. And who knows how long that will be? If you must, put it to a vote among the subscribers. I would just like to bring more life to this community and make it a more fun place in general. Fallout is supposed to be somewhat lighthearted and funny anyway, right?

    Sincerely,

    A passionate Fallout community member

EDIT: Paging u/HunterWorld, u/Shaka1277 and u/MisterWoodhouse. You are the most active mods I see on r/Fallout. Would any of you mind coming in and answering some of the community's questions? Could we maybe organize an AMA or something? Again, I'm just a very passionate fan that would like to rekindle the spark for many of us and am willing to discuss the subject in greater detail.

Why doesn’t the institute just send out a bunch of gen 2 synths to get Virgil?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 05:49 AM PDT

The glowing sea is irradiated so why would the institute opt to send Kellogg in there instead of gen 2 synths who shouldn't have a problem with radiation

(Game demographics) The Sole Survivor's (full) settlement empire would be very powerful by Fallout standards.

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 02:57 AM PDT

Sorry for the stupid title, but I just realized that the Commonwealth has 30 settlement locations in total, and if a really patient player develops all of them into successful communities, each of them having a settler population of 25 souls (maxed out Charisma + some Charisma-boosting gear and consumables make this number easily achievable), then he/she would end up leading 700-800 people. By Fallout standards, that's a VERY big number... And I'm not even factoring in the DLC settlements here - with those added to the formula, you could even achieve a (more scattered) total of 1.000 population! But let us stick to the base game, the Commonwealth... So 750 people, roughly.

Just think about it, New Vegas (Freeside + Westside + The Strip) probably had like 300 NPCs inhabiting it, maybe a little bit more (I'm not counting respawning random thugs and Fiends). Rivet City, the largest settlement of Fallout 3, had like 40 or 50 residents only, and Megaton was a bit smaller even than that. I could go on and on with examples, but you get the point.

And if we consider that you can equip every single one of your settlers with advanced weapons and armor, we can say that a patient and (construction-addicted) Sole Survivor isn't only in command of a large economy, but also a formidable military force... More than two dozen flourishing and stable settlements, each united under one banner.

Sure, the Sole Survivor's empire couldn't rivalize with the much larger NCR or Caesar's Legion, but those factions are very far away. Around the more ruined and less-civilized East Coast of the US (where the Commonwealth is located), he/she would be king. Or queen.

I’ve just started New Vegas and I can see why most people consider it the best Fallout game

Playing fallout 3 for the first time and it might be my new favorite fallout

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 07:20 PM PDT

I've played Fallout 4 and new Vegas but I skipped 3 for the longest time because I heard bad things about it. I don't know what it is about it but it just hooked me more than 4 and new Vegas and I can't stop playing.

I don't think I'm that far into the game but I just got done with the tranquility lane thing and I thought that whole quest was crazy and hilarious. I also think the DC setting is really cool. I've been to DC a bunch of times in real life and exploring it in the game is really fun.

What I was surprised about the most so far was the mention of the commonwealth and having to find a synth in rivet city. I don't know a lot about fallout lore and I had no idea there were synths all the way back in fallout 3 I thought it was just something they made for fallout 4.

Hopefully I have this much fun for the whole game but so far it's great.

What do y’all think of the silver shroud quest from fallout 4

    Where the heck is Dogmeat

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 03:27 AM PDT

I did the fort hagen quest with Nick and cant find Dogmeat anymore. He is not in sanctuary or the red rocket station close to sanctuary and also not in the castle. The only place I haven't checked yet is Diamond City. Does anyone know where he is?

    Fallout in upper Midwest Iowa/Minnesota

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 11:16 PM PDT

I feel like I'm the only person that's ever thought of a fallout game set in Iowa and Minnesota. Animals we've got- bison, rattlesnakes, elk, deer, gophers, frogs, cranes, turkeys, opossums, black widow spiders, bobcat, lynx, coyotes etc. Iowa doesn't have many main targets of a nuke so the farmland would be perfect for vast fields of plants. Tall prairie grass that has predators stalking you from a distance waiting for their chance to strike. Small towns still preserved with farmers willing to trade equipment and firearms or seeds etc. I know Iowa has a bunch of rivers and dams making huge lakes which could have giant predatory fish like gar, catfish, bass. Vast stretches of woods containing tons of little creatures which you could collect pelts from and sell for a profit. Venture into Minnesota and have to watch your temperature while you watch out for big creatures like moose and black bears. Raiders who attack you and farms for food. Explore Minneapolis or sea monies Iowa's ruins and find all sorts of relics. DLC you could head to Michigan/Wisconsin or even Canada which the us annexed by the time the bombs hit. What do you guys think? Would love to hear feedback and suggestions.

It sucks how you can’t kill everyone in 4

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 02:15 PM PDT

Idk bout 3 or 76 because I never played them but it's stupid how in 4 you're forbidden to kill everyone

I get you can't kill EVERYONE but let me kill everyone except one thing like how in Vegas you can kill who you want besides Yes Man

I got so annoyed trying to shoot up every place just for them to flop on their ass

I hate all the experiments of the vaults and most have gone wrong, but at least vault 81 is the only one that was saved thanks to the sacrifice of the overseer.

(Fo4) This might be a ridiculous question. But will downloading mods in Fallout 4 put my PS4 in a jailbroken state?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 12:44 AM PDT

I decided to get back into fallout 4 after not playing it for a while, and I'm considering getting into downloading mods. If I download a mod from the mods menu, will it put my playstation in a jailbroken state or does it not affect the console that way? I'm not too tech savvy so I don't know much about how the mods work.

What State do you want to see in fallout 5

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 02:28 AM PDT

Would a system similar to TES guilds work with Fallout's factions?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 09:21 PM PDT

I got into TES recently and i have been having a lot of fun with the guild. They offer a fun quests that are designed for specific type of characters. While fallout has, at least in New Vegas and 4, faction system which kinda offers similar style but not exactly. Railroad and legion focus on stealth and speech, but just loosely, and ultimately the character type is not the main focus, since they are main quests.

I can see the devs making quests like these and i feel it can be expanded on. For example you can get Frumentarii work from Vulpes, or Scout work from that BoS documents guy. I feel this can be expanded on, add a legitimate system where there are chain of quests possibly with rewards and recognition from AI after completion.

Since fallout doesn't have magic, i believe we can switch mages guild to Scouting. Then scout missions can help with exploration, stealth can be used for infiltration / Sabotage missions, and combat can be used for all types of missions really that have a focus on fighting, like clear out a raider camp or such.

I understand not every faction has a use for all these so i think each faction should at least use two of these and have quest chain for it outside the main quest. Also major part of this at least for me is AI feedback to your work and the rewards but if these quests have a visible effect on your faction then that would be interesting too.

Edit: Example of how this could work( will use legion cuz its my latest playthrough): Vulpes could give you stealthy type quests, minor ones like assassination and sabotage. Lucius could give you more combat focused quests, like taking over towns and such, while that Centurion outside the fort could give you scouting quests that would take you to smaller settlements to explore or NCR camps to report on.

Not every faction is this big, railroad for example should focus only on stealth and scouting.

Do you think this could work in fallout games or?

Why I believe fallout 3 is the best one of the series

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 07:27 PM PDT

(THIS IS MY PERSONAL OPINION, DO BOT ATTACK ME IF YOU DISAGREE)

first off, it has the best intro I believe, and the beginning has one of the most iconic moments in video game history, you see the wasteland for the first time in 3d, I think it has the best music, the best world space, the best side quests, the best dlc, the best graphics, naw I'm just kidding it dosen't have the best graphics but some prefer them over 4, so yes this is why I believe fo3 is the best one, I think bethesda did a great job, please do not attack me if you disagree

    I never liked the Legion

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 09:15 PM PDT

Everybody says that New Vegas is the BEST Fallout game, but honestly while it is well written in most aspects it has to have one of the worst enemy factions I have ever seen.

We're presented with Caesar's Legion, an empire of tribal wasteland raiders that has been united by a scientist-turned-warlord with knowledge of pre-war history and strategy. Okay, I can mesh with that. Sounds pretty good.

But Caesar's ideas for creating a new society run the gamut from interesting to absurd. There's some interesting philosophical stuff mixed in there, but really. Luddism? Gender segregation? Slavery?

This army has conquered a mutant-infested post-war America from Colorado to Arizona wielding lawnmower blades and shunning medicine, a feat I would argue is literally impossible.

And because we can't use robots or machines, we have to rely on forced manual labor, which is the opposite of efficient.

And on top of it all, Caesar himself is a cartoonishly evil and bloodthirsty hypocrite. Like you have sympathetic and charismatic Legion officers, Lanius is an animal but he has a weird sort of honor that the player can respect.

The worst thing a writer can do is have their villain kill somebody, especially one of their own people, for no reason. Villains are intimidating when they are practical, intelligent, and capable.

I don't understand why people make video essays critiquing Fallout 3's worldbuilding with esoteric questions like "what do they eat" while praising this game when this is the main antagonist.

Theory/Headcanon: The Sole Survivor isn't really The Director if The Institute, but rather Kellogg's replacement.

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 09:52 AM PDT

To quote Shaun, "I had no expectations that you'd survive out here, in all this. To not only do so, but manage to find me... to infiltrate the Institute itself... Extraordinary". This means you were little more than an experiment to Shaun. he knows you killed Kellogg, their top agent on the surface and with him gone, they needed a replacement and what better candidate than the person who killed him? It's true Shaun appoints you the position of Director, but I never felt like one. You don't make decisions about the future of The Institute and you don't even get to rearrange The Director's Quarters without modding and you don't hold meetings with the other Division Heads, which would've been an interesting way to shape The Institute the way you see fit. This is because you're not really The Director of The Institute, it's just another way to manipulate the SS into doing The Institute's dirty work. The meeting was just an act set up by Shaun and the other Division Heads, when in reality, it was decided the other Heads would rule by committee long before the SS reached The institute. However, not everyone knew this, like Loken and Higgs, which led to "A House Divided". The title of Director is simply given to the SS, as a way of giving them a sense of purpose while remaining oblivious to the fact they're essentially just Kellogg's replacement. This is especially true with the misc and side quests you are given, such as Political Leanings and Hypothesis, which could easily be done by a Courser. Building a Better Crop could've easily be done by a surface agent like Kellogg, if he were still alive. All of this just makes me feel more like Kellogg's replacement rather than Director of The Institute.

I just wish there was more you can do with The Institute, such as have extensions built, spy on Settlements, create and terminate programs and even rearrange your Director's Quarters. What if you could destroy or ally yourself with the other factions? You pretty much get the title "General of the Minutemen" tossed in your lap by Preston, so you could combine forces and use Institute tech to improve The Commonwealth. Maxon would never ally the BoS with The Institute, but a Synth Maxon would and if that doesn't work out, you could destroy them. It feels like there's so much wasted potential there.

    Curie, the best companion.

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 09:51 AM PDT

Does anybody else go entirely out of their way, to get her early? Every play through I collect my FC's and go straight to Vault 81. Knowing I'm going to get the permanent, 10% max health decrease from the mole rats. Worth it..

I just feel like her entire persona was written and voiced so well. Changing her from "Handy" to "Human" was a serious "wow that was pretty cool" moment for me, thought it was an interesting concept for companion missions. Her minimal dialogue with other players is interesting as well, she doesn't have the "to hell with this" hostility, that a normal Commonwealth companion has. I don't usually do an aggressive/mean play-through either, so her calm demeanor keeps me from going John Wayne on all the super mutants, at any given time. To me, she's easily the coolest companion to have and to get early.

Anyone feel like the Theives Circle in Fallout 1 was just kinda jammed in there for no reason?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 09:59 PM PDT

It's an organization with a single quest, no plot significance, and no other mentions in the rest of the series. There is no real reason for this quest to exist as Decker already gives the hub a nice corruption/crime feel in much more detail.

Can someone please help with fo4!!

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 11:24 PM PDT

So i reinstalled fallout 4 lately and when i installed f4se and tried seeing if it was in installed correctly via console commands, nothing came up. I thought oh maybe i didnt install it correctly and tried again. Still nothing. I tried this again 3 times but still nothing. I deleted fallout 4 from vortex, deleted all the main files, deleted the ini's and everything else in my data folder, verified the files integrity on steam, ran a compatibility troubleshooter, granted firewall access but still NOTHING IS WORKING! Never had any of these problems before i deleted the game, but when i tried installing it again after months of not playing, everything seems to be f'ed up with my game. Does anybody have any solutions or a way to help me out? I'm slowly losing my mind and starting to lose hope of ever playing modded fallout 4 again.
