    Awestruck by Vault 11 storytelling

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 08:13 PM PST

A story told by exploration. Great example of why video-game is a unique storytelling medium. Vault 11 was a short, unique, and suspenseful experience.

    Minor spoilers below

You enter the vault and see 4 skeletons and a mysterious voice tape. You see election posters, but the message seems to direct voters to elect the candidate's competitors and not themself. Weird.

As you explore the now-rodent-infested vault, the vault's tragedy is slowly revealed. Each section of the vault, each terminal, and the environment paints a vivid picture of what happened. It's just sooooo good. Highly recommend anyone playing FNV to check it out if you haven't. It's not part of a big quest, but it's one of my favorite stories in the game.

TIL: Each "talking head" in Fallout 1 and 2 was based on an actual clay model. A single model took an average of 8 weeks to make.

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 02:32 AM PST

    https://fallout-archive.fandom.com/wiki/NG_G.U.R.P.S._preview_(June_1996)

the designers at Interplay have gone out of their way to ensure that the graphics measured up to the rest of the game. Besides beautiful combat scenes (reminiscent of X-COM in both look and play), and fully animated icons, the game features a sort of "talking-head" conversation system that is like nothing ever attempted before. After the team worked out exactly what it was after, a sculptor made a clay head that fit the bill. From there, the artists took the completed head and carefully studied it to see what parts of the face needed to be animated most in order to create a realistic final image. Using a Faro Space Arm and the VertiSketch software, the team digitized the head, and then used the LightWave modeling software to do necessary geometric corrections. Next, texture maps were created in Photoshop and laid onto the modeled head. Finally, the art team began working on the animation.

    https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Talking_head

Most of them were painstakingly copied into the digital format from clay models by Scott Rodenhizer. Originally, Fallout was supposed to have 40-50 talking heads, but the average time to do one head, 8 weeks, was too time-consuming and was reduced to just 21.

I'm notoriously oblivious so maybe it was obvious they came from clay models, but I had no idea.

Why are Glory and some other Railroad members against killing Gen 1s and 2s, but not humans?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 01:00 AM PST

This is something that has been bugging me for a while. Deacon talks about how Glory and some other RR members are against killing gen 1s and 2s because there is the question of where do you draw the line. I get that, that itself makes sense.

My issue is that they do not seem to care about killing humans? In the mission you can do with Glory, she expresses discomfort with taking out the 1s and 2s in the subway tunnel. But in that same mission, you kill raiders and she doesn't say anything about it.

If the synths were just chilling and not trying to kill you, I would agree that destroying them could be unethical. But they're actively hunting you down. When humans shoot at you, you shoot back, that is all fine and good. But suddenly if they are synths we should try to spare them? At least when you kill them they don't feel pain.

I suppose an argument could be made for the 1s and 2s being forced to harm you, but they never express a desire NOT to as far as I'm aware. There is plenty of evidence for some raiders and gunners killing because they had no other choices and regretting it. It seems like killing them would be worse than killing the synths.

Either way you are defending yourself and saving the lives of others who might cross paths with them otherwise. I just don't understand where Glory is coming from if she has no qualms killing humans.

What would you guys name a sentient humanoid deathclaw race?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 04:39 AM PST

This is a hypothetical question that I thought of due to the fact that those weird intelligent deathclaws from Fallout 2 might've survived, and further experiments might be used with them to make a sort of more humanoid race in a possible later game.

I think Glory is proof that Brotherhood are right about synths

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 04:13 AM PST

So someone created a post about how Glory and railroad had no qualms about killing humans so I decided to expand it more.

Glory seems to be see herself and synths superior and implies that synths could a problem in future, here's some of her dialogue lines about humans:

''You keep throwing my ass into the deep end. I can't protect myself, our people, and the package without sometimes hurting one of your precious humans.''

'' Saw some of your work along the trail. Not bad. For a human, that is.''

'' You're a born-in-the-wild human model 1.0. You ain't bad for that model. Not in the same league as us synths. But hey, not your fault.''

'' Yeah, it's a real pleasure to meet another one of you humans. There sure are an awful lot of you.''

'' No matter what Dez and others say, synths ain't human. We're assembled bone by bone. Muscle by muscle. I've seen it.''

'' You humans are all bastards.''

Spent 4 hours legendary hunting.... do I have a problem?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 05:18 PM PST

Like seriously... I spent over 4 hours reloading a quicksave in the Sentinel Site because a Legendary Feral Ghoul Roamer keeps spawning. I am hunting for a Never Ending Lever Action Rifle.... haven't got it yet.... I had plenty of decent drops, including a Rapid Lever Action, Never Ending Radium Rifle and Never Ending Combat Shotgun and some totally worthless... Frigid Rolling Pin, Troubleshooter Walking Cane.

So am I crazy for still hunting for this? How long did you hunt for a legendary effect on something?

It would be great if dwarfes were brought back to Fallout 5 and they were be playable.

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 04:34 PM PST

Dwarfes are people with a genetic mutation, because they had a short stature. They were in Fallout 1 and Fallout 2, and it's very strange that they weren't in New Vegas.

It would be very interesting gameplay - players would have to come up with ways to get something from high places. From social point of view, this would also be very useful, because Fallout was first to introduce people with such a disease not as mythical creatures, but as human. And possibility to play such character would allow ordinary people to see life problems and features of people with dwarfism.

They will have problems with power armor. It is unlikely that it will be possible to wear it. Also, they will not be able to get things from high places, and player will have to deal with moving things in order to succeed.

What if F4 dwarf figures are a hint of a possible return? And there is such a thing in Fallout 76

Minor spoiler for fallout 4 I guess.

This isn't a massive deal but just a random thought I had. Just started another play through of 4 just confronted Kellogg exc exc.

What are the odds that he knows exactly who I am after so freaking long? I know father set him up, but I don't remember Kellogg really being in on it, unless I'm wrong. This isn't a bad writing Bethesda sucks rant, just more of a shower thought.

Can someone give me the rundown on how fallout works

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 05:32 PM PST

I just started new Vegas and I want to know

Can I buy guns or do I just have to find them

Can I start a campfire or do I have to find one to cook

Are there negatives to where guild armor (like if I kill an NCR person then still his stuff is there a negative to putting on his armor)

Less of a serious question but where and how do I get the mysterious magnum

And finally is it worth buying DLC for the game
