Inventory systems - NV and general

Inventory systems - NV and general

The NV inventory system is, IMO, the worst part of the game.

I have noticed a lot of modern games* have similar (bad) item management systems - they seem to have taken a big step backwards since the 90's, in this regard.

e.g. compare the NV inventory with the original Baldur's Gate - the (much) older game has a substantially better inventory system.

To swap a weapon, NV requires you to

    1) pull up the interface

    2) click the relevant sub-menu (weapons)

    3) scroll through the column to find the thing you want (e.g. an axe)

    4) click the axe

...whereas in Baldur's Gate, you could simply

    1) pull up the interface

    2) drag that axe from your inventory to your hand

Two clicks, rather than lots of clicks + scrolling.

Also, the axe in BG looks like a axe (so is easy to find) whereas the axe in NV looks like a blob of yellow text in a column full of blobs of yellow text.

Why is it that this part of gaming has become worse over time?

Is it simply for console compatibility?

    ---

    *Other examples I've tried: Borderlands2, Witcher 3, RDR2.

I played a lot of Borderlands, despite the interface. I quickly gave up on the other two partly because I found the UI and controls so annoying.

NV inventory - scrolling through a single long column, no drag-and drop, few visual cues

BG inventory - far from perfect, but you can drag, drop and stack items easily, and it is much faster to find what you want.

So I just recently got back into playing New Vegas and decided to pick up Cleansing Flame from the Van Graffs. I was excited to test it out... And there wasn't any blue flame coming out of the weapon. Any way to fix this bug on Xbox?
