As funny and cute as Old World Blues was on the surface, I feel like the incredible sadness of it gets underappreciated

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 07:16 PM PST

The '50s sci-fi B-movie pastiche that the DLC was going for was a nice theme for humourous purposes - and it's good for visual flair as well as memorable dialogue that is appropriately hammy, long-winded, and over-acted - but when you dig into the story and the characters it takes on a new meaning and is overflowing with pathos.

It's outright stated at one point that the scientists had to erase their memories at various points and replace them with old corny movies because the things they'd seen, done, and taken part in left a deeply damaging impact on their psychologies. The finishing monologue explaining "Old World Blues" as a concept sums up the nostalgic tone and the meaning it carries pretty clearly:

Doctor Mobius: "There is an expression in the Wasteland: "Old World Blues.""

Doctor Klein: "It refers to those so obsessed with the past they can't see the present, much less the future, for what it is."

Doctor Dala: "They stare into the what-was, eyes like pilot lights, guttering and spent, as the realities of their world continue on around them."

Doctor O: "Science is a long, steady progression into the future. What may seem a sudden event often isn't felt for years, even centuries, to come."

Dala hated her new form so much that she couldn't stand to look at herself in the mirror anymore, and smashed all the mirrors in her home because she missed the human body she once inhabited.

Borous was a person who, by all accounts, had a really fucked up childhood and was perpetually trapped in a state of adolescence, to the point where he gets petty vengeance on an old crush by talking shit about her over the intercom and experiments on dogs to make up for his bad relationship with Gabe; then when you tell him what he did to Gabe, and the other dogs, he pretty much tells the player that he's gonna delete his own memories to avoid having to deal with it.

Zero is so obsessed with Mr House's securitrons (because of what appears to be professional envy that the securitrons were such a massive success) that he created Muggy as a "Fuck you!" to Mr House. Muggy himself hates Zero for creating him purely for petty narcissistic reasons, and it's pretty clear that Zero did it to make himself feel big and strong.

With Dr 8, it's heavily implied that he loved music and communicating meaning through sound, so his speech becoming garbled and incomprehensible as a result of being attacked (because of his own experiments, no less) has a tragic Twilight Zone irony to it.

Klein is a little harder to parse but I get the sense that he thought of himself as a leader and wanted to make the world a better place for humanity, and his vision led to a lot of really horrible things for himself and the rest of the Think Tank (which is to say nothing of the poor bastards he experimented on for decades). This is compounded by the fact that he seems to be the most incompetent of all the Think Tank.

Then of course there's Mobius, who took on the role of villain for the sole purpose of distracting the Think Tank enough to keep them complacent and avoid hurting people more than they already had. He basically sacrificed his sanity, memories, and life so that he could mitigate the damage they were doing, who has neither a start nor a finish. He barely remembers how this whole charade got started, and he seems only vaguely aware that - without the Courier's help - the process is never-ending.

So yeah, on the surface it's very funny and has an incredibly colourful cast of characters that are hilarious and weird and memorable, but the feeling that sticks with me even 2 weeks after completing it is one of deep pity and sadness for these broken messes and their victims.

Not really a review of the DLC overall, just more a dive into the core story and the characters. I know a lot of people have complained about the repetitive quests, but I feel like that ties into the story being told of the Courier being sent on these fetch quests as tedious distractions to keep you from getting to the truth, which makes the final showdown have more weight than if they expedited the process. I also didn't have a problem with the enemies being bullet sponges, and if anything I thought Dead Money's enemies were way more overpowered in regards to their HP. It also starts off very slow with about 30 minutes worth of exposition (what is this, Metal Gear Solid 2!?), but it's all for the purpose of establishing a tone of these narcissistic scientists playing with a new pet and neurotically bickering with one another, so I think it works. My one problem is that game crashed more than usual, but otherwise I loved it.

Can I give the Platinum Chip to Mr. House and still get the Wild Card ending?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 10:57 PM PST

So I just talked to Yes Man and killed Benny and Yes Man sort of hinted to give the Chip to Mr. House. Should I do that or would it just complicate things down the line if I want the Wild Card ending?

    Should I play with Multithreading?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 10:21 PM PST

I read somewhere that the game only runs using 2 cores from the CPU. I noticed this while looking at the ini for New Vegas Tick Fix. Would turning this on impact performance at all? Is it recommended for a ryzen 3600?

TIL that in Las Vegas during the 1950s, Casinos offered "Atomic Tourism" in which guests could watch atomic bombs be tested in the desert as a form of entertainment

Looking for some realistic damage mods

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 02:51 PM PST

Does any one know of any mods that make damage realistic, as in a headshot will almost always kill, whether be an enemy or yourself. Also if someone's wearing power armor or just generally very powerful armor, they wouldn't get killed with a .22, maybe something like an amr or just a very high caliber rifle.

First time starting a challenge build

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 08:14 PM PST

I'm trying to make a challenge build that only uses the GRA Laser Rifle and any of the machete variants wearing only Merc armor - something like a sniper or a mercenary build that disintegrates people. (Skills: Energy Weapons, Sneak, Melee Weapons, maybe Barter???) This is my first time trying a build that severely limits me, and I was wondering if anybody had any tips on making this not too much of a hair ripping experience.

Is this game just not clicking with me?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 03:17 PM PST

I don't know, New Vegas seems fun but there's just something about it that I can't get into. Maybe its the gunplay, the graphics, maybe the engine? It's just not clicking with me. The whole idea of being able to change the course of the game with certain dialogue is a cool idea but this game just wont click with me.

What companion would be best for my character?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 02:01 PM PST

My character is siding with the NCR and is basically working as a James Bond style spy who mostly uses snipers and pistols, who would make the best for them?

How would you balance the game?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 11:45 AM PST

What systems or items would you buff or nerf and why? For example, I would buff Charisma by adding more perks dependent on somewhat high Charisma, because as it stands, there are only 2 and neither are that great, IMO.
