Posted: 01 May 2021 03:23 AM PDT Just wanted to discuss a topic that's been done to death, but with a twist. Just to start off, I love Fallout's power armor as it was introduced prior to Fallout 4. I think it did something unique from other franchises by treating PA as a very specific piece of equipment with very real downsides. What I mean is that it was not a tank replacement as so many people say, it would certainly protect you from regular small arms but more specialized equipment like AT guns and rocket launchers would most definitely kill them. It was the power armors strength enhancements and protectiom from threats that infantryman face that was it's advantage. A soldier could carry firepower usually delegated to a squad sized group and could do so without tiring. He was fully protected with armor which is what I feel a lot of people forget when hearing the whole "2500 joules" number. It's pretty much full coverage all around the suit and not just in a plate carrier as we see in modern armor. That means they're also more resistant to shrapnel and other dangers that don't involve direct fire. I think that the small arms part is underaprecisted as the PA can go anywhere an infantry squad could. You could clear rooms with near impunity as the enemy isn't going to be wielding AT weapons inside. I liked Fallout making the armor usefull for the average infantryman rather than the usual "it's better than a tank and just kills everything" that you see everywhere else. PA was designed to take on threats that infantry dealt with most of the time, other infantry and occasionally harder targets like bunkers and armored vehicles. They're almost like a humvee on legs, infantry support wise. Sure it doesn't have great protection even with the applique armor but it's a great gun platform and it has enough armor to get the job done. And in the older games we saw that dedicated groups of infantry, like the BoS and NCR at Helios, could very much kill PA equipped troops. Now it never goes into detail how but I'm sure the NCR has a stockpile of pulse grenades and AMR AP to deal with them. I will preface the next point by saying that I did have problems with 3s and NVs visual appearance for the armor. I don't think it's skintight like a lot of people say but I think it could have certainly been bigger for what it was, certainly should have made you taller by a few inches. Fallout 1/2 had it about right for what little we saw of it in detail. I will also say I liked the mechanics of 4 and I liked the fact you could personalize it. But I think 4 has really leaned into the idea that PA was a tank or vehicle replacement too much and has lost it's interesting quirk. Just visually it appears to have pretty thick armor, especially on the chest. Far more than what is really necessary for typical arms. The size also screams armored vehicle to me. I know in-game stuff isn't supposed to taken at face value but I think the extra armor when compared to the older games is a bit redundant. The amount of armor you would need to effectively stop an anti-tank weapon like an RPG is not something you can put on something like a suit of power armor. The thing would weigh tons, and at that point why not just use a tank or other vehicle. It's going in the realm of mechs, which is very cool and I like mechs, but I think makes them less interesting. I know a lot of this isn't based on lore and to a certain extent is my interpretation but I thought it was a factor of power armor that doesn't get talked about a lot and I was interested in what you guys think Edit I actually liked the game play of 4s power armor, it felt sufficiently vulnerable to things that it should have been vulnerable to. In that it's not invincible, I just wish it was a little bit smaller and less chunky. Certainly not to Fallout 3 and NV levels but somewhere in between. Personal opinion, I think 4s armor looks goofy with the proportions. Especially the legs and helmet. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 May 2021 08:04 AM PDT Hey all, sorry if this was posted before, but how come food throughout the wasteland is still edible 200+ years later? Is it the radiation preserving it or do the companies that manufacture it fill it with rads like Nuka Cola? [link] [comments] |
