The Minutemen are the best faction in Fallout 4

I like the idea of your average Joe with maybe not much signing up to fight for his downtrodden countryman in a post-apocalyptic society. The elitism of both the Brotherhood of Steel and Institute make them undesirable for both me personally and my current character.

Instead of focusing on gathering old technology and excluding outsiders or developing androids and being secretive, the Minutemen are about helping the average settler survive in the harsh Wastes and just maybe make their lives a bit easier. It also gives volunteers a sense of purpose.

Fallout 4 - You Only Live Once

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 10:10 PM PDT

I've been getting into alternate playthroughs lately and stumbled across Many A True Nerd on YouTube. He is currently doing a Fallout 4 - You Only Live Once playthrough, and damn if my anxiety isn't getting the best of me while watching this. If you have some free time and are looking for new content, I HIGHLY recommend this series. It has got the ole gears turning in my head that I may want to try this.

What are some other unique playthroughs/builds that y'all have done or started? What were the main influences for wanting to do those style of runs? What were some unique challenges for them?

I only ask because I have played through FO4 numerous times and it's a game that I genuinely have a fun time playing almost always (aside from the bugs). I don't really play modded runs, but am willing to give a few a shot, so long as they don't break any of the game.

I prefer ambient noise and music and never listen to the radio.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 09:21 PM PDT

    I play new vegas.

Ambient noise is always better than black mountain or radio new vegas. If you haven't done so yet, you should turn the radio off for a few hours and you might be surprised at what you hear. I feel like I can barely move half a kilometer without hearing the noises of creatures or gunfights in the distance.

(Fo4) Are Cave Crickets OP for anyone else? Those things 1 shot me more often than Deathclaws.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2021 06:14 AM PDT

Either there's some sick mod author secretly buffing Cave Crickets or those things are the most dangerous creatures in the wasteland.

But seriously, unless someone else can confirm that Cave Crickets are extremely deadly one shot killing machines then I'm going to have to assume one of my mods decided it'd be funny to sneak in a Cave Cricket buff. Well it's not funny!

    Ok, it's kinda funny.

    The Euclid Laser is Unpredictable

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 06:13 PM PDT

So, I'm out looking for the bomber for the Boomers and I try to use the Euclid on the cazadors. It fires off the tracking lasers and gives up. Then it starts hitting random locations all over the place sporadically.

Eventually, I make it to Lake Mead and go under water and when I get back out there's no tracking lasers.

I head over Nellis and go inside pearl's house.

About 15 real time minutes have passed.

I finish my business there, open the door to leave and

An orbital strike outside blasts into the school house.

An evening in Malden Middle School

    Posted: 31 Mar 2021 06:28 AM PDT

Restarted FO4, again, "very hard" difficulty this time, it's going fine. Beginning of the game, Preston sends me to help some settlement way down south, and I casually wander into Malden Middle School, into Vault 75.

There's a ton of gunners in Vault 75! Took a long time to get that bobble-head at the end. Used almost every chem and stimpack I had. Finished the vault at Level 10.

Finally ready to head out, open the double-wood doors, and a Deathclaw is trapped between the basement entrance door and the gate at the top of the stairs! The gate, by the way, is closed. DC immediately picks me up and shakes me out - reload, reload, reload. Took a double-shot of Jet and some quick maneuvering, and more stimpacks, to get through the DC's legs and out the gate at the top of the stairs.

Ran down the street into Slocum Joe's place to catch my breath. Shot a mean dog. Fast-travel back to Sanctuary to get cleaned up.

Quite an adventure, and a longer night than expected.

My NCR Action Figure (Lt Hayes)

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 01:58 PM PDT

    https://imgur.com/a/kCRCZQA

Used a WWII World Peacekeepers action figure. Repainted the face and hair. Sewed the armor, mag pouches, and gloves from leather; the mantle from linen which I painted with desert camo; the green beret from fleece. Tried to be accurate but made a few modifications of my own. Hope u guys like it - even if you're not an NCR fan...

FNV Service Rifle Qualm of Mine; a.k.a. How I Found Out the Firearms of Fallout Don't Make Sense

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 07:51 PM PDT

I've played New Vegas for years, and in several (modded) play throughs I solely relied on the Service Rifle as my courier's main firearm (to fit my build's meta and such). Now over the span of this pandemic, I've gotten into gunsmithing (as I live in a state where all that's a-ok and constitutional), and I've learned quite a bit about the various AR platforms. The Service Rifle is definitely based on Stoner's early concepts of the AR-15; the only difference being in game all the AR rifles have side charging uppers.

This was probably done to make reload animations simplified, however, with my new knowledge on the AR platform, I find myself bothered by the fact the Service Rifle and others still retain their forward assist (which is used in the animation when condition of the rifle is low). However in reality, a side charging upper has no need for a forward assist, as its bolt is constructed in a different manner (see (23) Side Charging Upper: Guide, Tips, Maintenance, and More Common Questions - YouTube )

This is probably something a vast majority of y'all don't really care all that much about; it's just the more I've learned about real life firearm mechanics, the less Fallout firearms make sense realistically (take the 10mm pistol from Fallout 1 & 2, as it's a semi auto revolver with a detectable magazine, or the Combat Shotgun of Fallout 3 and its ejection port located like 6-8in behind the magazine).

TL;DR: FNV Service Rifle and other Fallout Firearms have unnecessary parts and non-operable designs, making it confusing for an amateur gunsmith who's played the Fallout series of years. But that doesn't mean they aren't cool and iconic.

Why Jacoren was right to exile the Vault Dweller

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 07:17 PM PDT

    Bear with me here,

Although many might feel a strong sense of betrayal in that last talking head sequence with Jacoren for being essentially permanently exiled from the only home we ever had, it's necessary to understand that he did it because he not only deeply cares about Vault 13 but also you.

Throughout the game, we can see how Jacoren cares about your well-being out in the wastes and appreciates the work you've done to preserve the continuity of the vault.

    A few examples:

"You have no idea how sorry I am to send you back out." -When sending you out to the wastes again.

"Don't downplay what you've done. You've saved a lot of lives." -After you find the Water Chip.

"You should be proud of yourself for all you've accomplished. We depended on you and you came through." -After ending the mutant threat

However, Jacoren must also wrestle with the risk of the vault residents wanting to leave. As he says in his ending speech, were you to re-enter the vault, many would see the greatness that you've accomplished as proof that the outside world is worth exploring. But we know better, the world in 2161 is a world that has barely recovered from the devastation less than a century ago, a world where savagery is widespread and only the most vicious survive.

"Everyone will want to talk to you. Every youngster will look up to you, and want to emulate you. And then what?

They'll want to leave. What happens to the Vault if we lose the best of a generation? What if we are the only safe place in the world? You just gave us back all these lives . . . I can't take the chance of losing them.

I've made a lot of tough decisions since I took this position. But none of them harder than this one. You saved us, but you'll kill us. I'm sorry. You're a hero . . . and you have to leave." -Ending speech

It's a dangerous prospect for Jacoren, but it pains him greatly to have to exile you. He is eternally grateful for what you have done and could never repay you, but for you to re-enter the vault would only cause the destruction of what you've accomplished.

Depending on the character you roleplay, you may either simply leave, or end up brutally murdering him, which I believe is morally wrong. While the canonical ending has Jacoren live, we can see how opening the vault leads to its demise when in Fallout 2, we see residents massacred and ransacked by the Enclave, the danger of the outside world Jacoren warned us about.

What do you guys think? I'd love to hear what your opinions are on the matter.

Fallout has forever changed my taste in music

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 09:42 AM PDT

After playing fallout 4 and (I'm hoping) most of new Vegas, I can say that that type of music is the only type I can really enjoy now, and I would like to thank everyone at Bethesda that chose which music to put into the radio's for this love of this type of music.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 10:34 AM PDT

In Fallout 4, between the Thicket Excavation and Tenpines Bluff, i found an interesting thing but i don't know if it's an easter egg or a bug, as i found nothing on the internet: some digged dirt, wooden boards and a NON hostile cockroach on it...idk if this has been already discovered, but if so, some explaining? (Btw this is my first post on reddit).

    Help! I don't have a pip boy when I exit Vault111!

    Posted: 31 Mar 2021 03:01 AM PDT

I'm on Xbox One with mods and when I try to start a new game I exit vault 111 and my pip boy is invisible, I can still navigate/interact with it but I have to 'inspect' an item to actually see what it is before I use/equip it.

If I get into power armour It works and I saw online a similar problem with invisible pip boys regarding power armour, and thay transferring your inventory into a workshop then getting in and out of power armour fixes it, but I've tried that and it hasn't worked so I'm guessing this is a different issue because this only happens with a new game, all my old saves/characters pip boys work fine.

The Pip Boy App doesn't work either until I get into and out of power armour.

I have a few pip boy mods installed, Improved map with visible roads and a couple that add legendary effects to various paintjobs, but these are all on my old characters aswell.

I HAD the Another Life mod installed and read online that it causes similar problems but I uninstalled it ages ago, but I haven't cleared my reserved space since then. Could it be there's lingering data from that mod causing this?
