    Once you have completed your most recent playthrough, it's proper Fallout etiquette to tell us what your next build will be.

    Seriously people. Get with the program. Fooking noobs.

    Why I have mixed feelings about Piper (2.0)

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 07:30 AM PST

    Although I think that it's great that she's trying to revive journalism in a post-apocalyptic society, I--as a journalist, myself--can't say that I like how she's doing it.

    For one, she completely disregards the SPJ Code of Ethics (https://www.spj.org/ethicscode.asp), as well as the RTDNA Code of Ethics (https://www.rtdna.org/article/rtdna_proposes_revised_code_of_ethics). While, yes, it is possible that copies of these codes have been destroyed, I don't think that it's probable. When you think about how many other things have survived, is it really a stretch to say that copies of these Codes of Ethics have survived somewhere in the Commonwealth? In my previous post, someone said that they were likely protected by highly advanced security systems in places that not even the most well-trained mercenaries could breach. This CoE isn't some highly guarded secret that only the heads of journalistic institutions have access to. Literally everyone who calls him/herself a "journalist" is supposed to know them. All copies of this code being destroyed is unlikely.

    Another point that someone on my previous post made is that the CoE doesn't matter in a post-apocalyptic world. I think that's false; in fact, I think that it matters even more. In this world, she's pretty much just the only journalist. There's no-one else to publish pieces that refute her claims. With her being the sole journalist, the emphasis on being a good one is even greater.

    Another thing is that what she's doing is basically just yellow journalism. Has anyone here actually ever read her "news"? The papers that she cranks out are, in essence, pure editorials that she calls "facts". I can't say that I blame her distrust of authority, though, given her past. But it's wrong that she lets this worm its way into her reporting, albeit if she ended up being right about Mayor McDonough.

    Now, this was all by holding her to real-life standards. But in this fictional universe, it's pretty clear that she's doing a pretty good job for herself.

    The RTDNA Code of Ethics was created in 1946, its latest update being in 2015. As those who know Fallout lore know (which isn't me; I'm going off of commenters), the Fallout universe diverged in 1947. As u/sithlordabacus put it, "We do not know the original RTDNA CoE would have changed since then". A very good point, on which I agree. Again, I was previously holding her to real standards, and explaining why her work wouldn't hold up in real life. In terms of the fictional universe, she's doing pretty good.

    Another fair point is literacy. Piper was born and raised in a small town and taught herself journalism, which is pretty impressive considering how rare literacy seems to be in the Fallout universe. As user u/nomedable said, "Literacy is seen as a rare skill outside of large settlements, in a world where learning your letters is a 'high level' skill, it seems more than plausible that the intricacies of writing are lost". On this, I agree. She doesn't exactly have formal education in writing and journalism, so it's fair that she's not going to meet modern expectations. But I do think that she does know the difference between "facts" and "editorials"; she's just so wrapped up in what happened to her family that she allows her distrust of authority to act as a justification to bend and twist the truth a little bit--something that's found in surplus in most news outlets in real life.

    In the end, Piper's writing is more like reading Fox News or CNN; there's bound to be a kernel of truth, but it's more than likely to be twisted in at least one way.

    To her credit, journalism in the Fallout universe is all kinds of messed up, so she was likely just abiding by the journalism that she saw--thus, in her eyes, she wasn't at fault.

    Someone who can say this much better than I is Oxhorn, who made a video on the subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCs1objTEkU. He basically explains why Piper is a bad journalist, but a good person. I agree with this, but I'm focusing more on the "bad journalist" here.

    The long and short of this is that Piper's on the Wright (I'm not sorry for the pun) track in that she's trying to revive journalism, but how she's doing it is wrong because she ignores two CoEs that distinguish real journalism from yellow journalism.

    TL;DR: By holding her to real-world standards, Piper is a bad journalist. But by holding her to fictional standards and circumstances, she's doing what she can, which is respectable.

    As a companion, I really like her; she's fun, useful, and easy to get approval from if you have a decent morality (and a shady talent for lockpicking). Her dilemma with Nat presents a fun moral argument, too.

    *Edit: I know that holding a fictional character to real-life standards is kind of stupid. I was bored and figured, "Why not?"

    With Fallout, I became big fan of Retro-Futurism. That's interesting anachronistic art.

    The Sole Survivor and PTSD

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 02:25 AM PST

    Does anyone else think it's a little odd that there's no references to the the fact that the Sole Survivor would be developing PTSD by the end of the "main" quest-line? I mean after all s/he goes through, I doubt they'd be okay mentally and emotionally.

    I started thinking about this when I started writing my fan fiction. The Sole Survivor:

    • Barely escaped the nuclear devastation of their home, their neighbors and their time and world;
    • Woke up from cryo freeze only to watch their spouse get murdered to death in front of them, their son kidnapped while they watched on helplessly, before being "refrozen";
    • Woke up again 60 years later to a world full of Raiders trying to murder them, Feral Ghouls trying to murder them, Super Mutants trying to murder them, Synths trying to murder them, giant bugs trying to murder them, radioactive water that will kill them if they drink too much of it, rogue robots trying to murder them....;
    • They're forced to kill Kellogg, several deathclaws, a courser and somehow find a way into the institute in a matter of weeks, maybe a few months;
    • When they do find Shaun, he's now an old man whose dying. This comes hand in hand with a choice: betray the institute and their son, or side with the Institute and doom the wasteland;
    • Realize that everything they held dear is gone for good. Their family, their home, friends. Their hopes and dreams. All of it has disappeared in front of their eyes while they were helpless to stop it.

    I know for gameplay reasons it wouldn't help anyone if the Sole Survivor broke down crying every five minutes, but there's not a single reference. In New Vegas, one of the NCR Troopers at McCarren gets raped by Cook-Cook and develops PTSD that takes the form of her humping every woman that she can get her hands on. Bethesda are brilliant at world building, it's why their Fallout games are so amazing. I just feel like they dropped the bomb here. There was so much potential for the player to see what it would be like being someone who suffers from PTSD. As good as Fallout 4 was and still is, these sort of details bug me. Anyone else feel the same or is it just me?

    I feel like Fo4 didn’t get enough DLC’s

    That robot lady is very odd indeed

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 09:41 PM PST

    Why Jezebel has such a extreme disdain towards humans, particularly the sole survivor? After you finish that robot-chick's quest, she just wanders around the settlement and refuses to talk? What is the reason why she doesn't want to cooperate with the SS? Does she piety that she is now stuck as a robo brain? Is she jealous of humans? What is the reason why her attitude is so sucky towards the SS? I am starting to think that she has a problem with not just the SS but all humans in general. Was she forced into being a robo brain or what?

    Your not an overseer

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 07:10 PM PST

    In the game "Fallout Shelter" you are commonly referred to as the vaults "Overseer", though... Thats a stretch to say the least. Take for example the Mysterious Stranger who you can encounter at random intervals. You can receive Caps from him, but will be told that you're "Virtually robbing him, basically"

    Besides Robbing the mysterious stranger, it is odd that you have to create your own vault number and start from nothing. This leads me to believe that your rather... A criminal who discovered a vault that wasn't commissioned. Especially when your dwellers may only leave when you permit it, despite entering voluntarily. This just doesn't make sense. (Assuming there is no experiment by Vault-Tec because the Vault wasn't completed) your basically just a psycho with a God complex, holding multiple hostages until they die under tour tyranny. Have fun!

    Hey fellow Fallout players! What was your favorite playthrough of any Fallout game and what made it so great!

    For me, it was a Fallout New Vegas playthrough where my character had 1 charisma and 1 intelligence. Complete hilarity, especially with Helios 1 and the failed diologue.

    Curie is my absolutely favorite part of FO4

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 04:13 PM PST

    I have just started playing FO4 for the first time in years (I'm normally a 3/NV fan more than anything) and I felt inspired to make a Curie appreciation post! She's a breath of fresh air and I've laughed out loud at some of her commentary (my favorite is "we call the police and they get the baggies for evidence, yes?" when she sees a dead body). I decided to join the Railroad just because they seem like they'll have a doctor who can help her become human. Is Curie anyone else's favorite companion?

    Raider settlements VS Normal settlements

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 03:29 AM PST

    So I've finished the main quest for Nuka World and have 3 raider outposts now. Considering Preston hates me, the silver lining is I don't need to hear his annoying voice of giving quests.

    My current dilemma is turning most of the settlements to raiders outposts or do a 50/50.

    While raider outposts definitely bring in more caps, I can't deny the fact that they are a bunch of entitled individuals that needs to be given food. Normal settlements have their own perks as well.

    Thoughts?

    If You Were To Make A New Fallout, Where Would You Set It? And Why?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 05:45 PM PST

    Personally I'd set it in England, probably the west midlands as that gives us opportunity to add several maps to the game (either dlc or base game). Centre it around Birmingham perhaps, have DLC taking you north into the Cumbrian Mountains and then a DLC taking you into wales.

    My natural instinct would be to say london but there's a high probability that'd have a nice, nuke sized irradiated hole in it :/

    Enemy weapons / equipment / gear / carried items - all Fallout games

    Is there an online resource that lists which items, particularly which weapons, all enemies can carry / spawn with? Fallout.fandom.com doesn't seem to have this info in their creature descriptions.
