Fallout | Preston Garvey is Underated and Overhated

Fallout | Preston Garvey is Underated and Overhated

Preston Garvey is Underated and Overhated

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 07:42 AM PST

I understand people, especially people who aren't playing a minutemen run, being annoyed or disliking Preston. Hell, I don't care if people dislike him for this. I hate Piper simply because her voice and her attitude make me want too die.

However, Preston is a well written and likeable character if you ignore the fact that he was designated the fetch quest character. He's noble, kind, and just a big sweetheart overall. I love him hearing him talk too random npcs when we travel the commonwealth together.

His backstory is also super sad. The reason he makes Nate or Nora the general if they stay in sanctuary and help out is because (spoiler) he was incredibly suicidal after all of his friends and family died. Based on your actions, he will even say you gave him hope again. You, who lost an entire world, have the choice too help him and the entire commonwealth out.

Preston is one of the few people in game who didn't experience the pre-war world who tries too keep it alive out of the goodness of his heart. Also, the way he calls Nate or Nora babe if they romance him is really cute.

TLDR: its only my first playthrough and im sad im the only one who loves preston :(

EDIT: hi I did not expect this too get like 2k upvotes and 300 comments, this is my second post on this reddit account and I wrote it in the middle of my AP Lang class (junior year grind). to address a few points:

    - I do not find Piper enjoyable, It is a personal opinion. I see why others do, I just don't personally find her a companion I want too spend time with. You do not need too be overly aggressive because she is your #1 wife. I understand and love your vigor, but please don't be inappropriate towards me because I dislike her.

    - It's ok if you don't like Preston. He can be annoying and everyone is entitled too their opinions. I just wanted too make a post saying why I enjoy him, the reasons why he's tied with Hancock as my favorite companion so far.

    - Another settlement needs your help.

Fallout 4 moments that just make you shake your head?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 12:55 AM PST

I remember my first playthrough I started the freedom trail quest, I got all the way to the railroad hq and I got to the puzzle door and thought to myself "FUCK i didnt pay attention to the markers and i dont know the code" but before i left i jokingly said "huh what if the passcode was literally just the railroad theres no way it's that simple" Imagine how i felt when i popped it in for shits and giggles and the door opened up Would have been cool if the passcode was randomly generated each playthrough, this small simple moment still sticks with me and is one of the first things I think of when I think of fallout 4

How come Fallout 4 has no disturbing content?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 11:26 PM PST

Tranquility Lane and the Dunwich building in Fallout 3 are classics. Heck some of the vaults are really scary. The town of Nipton and the whole Dead Money expansion felt disturbing in NV.

But where are the disturbing areas and quests in Fallout 4? It all felt a little plain to me.

    Complicated thoughts on Lonesome Road

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 07:53 PM PST

Lonesome Road rubbed me the wrong way, in ways I can't really put into words. Mostly by being somewhat similar but fundamentally different to the classic Fallout games

From the outset, it made me feel special. I hate that. It made me feel like my character was some special person before he made his mark. The main antagonist has some personal interest in me.
What the hell? That's not how it's supposed to go! In Fallout, The Master is only interested in me because I knew the location of a vault. In Fallout 2, Frank Horrigan and Dick Richardson don't even know who I am, and only even hear about me when I get to their oil rig. Even so far in New Vegas, I've felt like everyone with power has only been invested in me as far as I can be useful to their goals.

And let's talk about that final confrontation with Ulysses, with his whole talk about "knowing your history," and "America reawakening." *yet not one mention of the Enclave, Unity, Richard Gray, Frank Horrigan, etc.* So far New Vegas has been periodically giving me delicious little drops of Fallout 2 references. To have a character with such a fixation on history that he named himself after a Civil War general never reference history from just 50 or so years ago in-game just confused me. NCR's war with the remaining Enclave at Navarro was about as far away from NV as the Vietnam War is to us.

The whole time I was talking to him, I just wanted to discuss history from the Classic games. Talk him out of his dream of America by showing him the absolute failure and madness of the Enclave, and the flaws of the Master's plan. Only after fully learning the past from people like Arcade Gannon and Marcus, of course.

Also, tunnelers. Excuse me, what? The best of prewar and Enclave engineering creates deathclaws, which aren't *that* different from actual animals. Even their aggression can be explained by how they were made as weapons. Still, Fallout and Fallout 2 NPC's remark that it's an absolute anomaly that they've evolved so much in 80 years. Then normal radiation and atmospheric FEV creates bioluminescent, scaled humans capable of tunneling, which have an absolutely irrational aggression response to all other creatures.

These creatures are apparently going to be the doom of the Mojave. Does it make sense for them to attack humans (which tend to be, y'know, armed with guns)? Apparently. Even deathclaws, engineered for killing, are just a hazardous animal, not civilization's doom.

And those marked men. They're trapped in the divide 'cause of radiation and wind stripping skin blah blah blah. They're obviously not feral, since they can use guns and set up ambushes. Why do they attack on sight? Something about hatred and desperation yadda yadda yadda. I would have *loved* to talk with them about their mission, maybe take sides in a few sidequests, but nah. Generic enemies that don't say so much as a word.

Basically what I got so far. Needed to get that out there. Would be cool if I get a lotta replies so I can talk to y'all about New Vegas and the classic games and all that good stuff.

I need help getting fallout 4 to run on my gaming laptop

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 10:07 PM PST

I have a high end gaming laptop that runs very well and I played Vegas a lot and I wanted to revisit fallout 4 because I played it ages ago on ps4. However when I run the game I get a black screen at the main menu where the power armor is in the red rocket. The initial startup screen is totally fine but once I hit play the screen stays black. So if anyone has any tips to help me that would be appreciated. BTW my specs are a Msi gs66 stealth, core i9 10gen, GeForce rtx 2080 super max q, 300 hz monitor, 64 ram, 2 terabyte ssd

Why don't Fallout people clean up? Especially Fallout 4.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 07:43 AM PST

I feel like Shamus Young made a lot of good points in his video on Fallout but one that really stuck out to me that I think most people could get on board with is this. People should not be living in rubble and trash. Now there are some people, like me, who wouldn't make much of an effort at picking up if left to their own devices, but most people are to varying degrees motivated to clean the places where they live (even guys like me will only let their places get so bad before we get off our seats and do a massive clean up), to clear away rubble and debris and trash to make a place livable. Sure it can be a daunting project, but they have also had 200 years. That's a very long time. In 200 years we went from 13 original colonies to having major cities on both coasts and many other places with the land in between clear cut and laid with interstate highways. I think the least we can accomplish in a 200 year span is clearing away trash in livable areas.

Shamus points to that one lady who has the trading outpost in the old diner. I think her name is Trudy. Aside from her choice of shelter being impractical, she hasn't bothered to do any cleaning, there's even a skeleton sitting in the diner that she hasn't moved.

The Forged keep returning to Sagus Ironworks. Am I missing something?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 01:11 AM PST

I've cleared the area twice before. The first time was to complete a quest. I killed every last one of them flamethrower assholes and even got a [CLEARED] marker on my map. Later when I fast travelled to that place again after a while to get some junk, the Forged had returned and I was being blasted by a flamethrower as soon as I spawned there (I fast travelled). Once again I checked every nook and cranny until I had eleminated every last one of them. Recently I fast travelled to Sagus and the Forged have returned again. Am I missing something?

Is there any other way to get the Open Season quest from Mackenzie again?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 02:49 AM PST

I'm playing Nuka World again and the way I plan to do it this time is to string the raider bosses a long a bit and then get Open Season and take them out/free the settlers once talk of taking the Commonwealth starts as this feels the most IC choice for the character I'm playing this time. Only problem is I went to see Mackenzie and since I have Porter Gage with me as my companion at the moment I wasn't sure if accepting the quest would set him off as I've read he turns on you if you do it. But now I'm not sure how to get her to offer it again and I want to do it eventually. Would I have to go back to the Commonwealth and get it from Preston Garvey?

Operation Touchdown would make a very good introductory movie to the Fallout Cinematic Universe

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 02:07 AM PST

    https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Operation_Touchdown

It's a rather great plot, ends in tragedy, but leaves the end open to continue production of additional films.

Not only that, but Bethesda has more than enough money to hire competent writers and producers, or, they could entirely make the movie themselves with their cinematics team.

How do you think you'd fair against a Protectron?

is nuclear winter prequel to 76 ?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 01:21 AM PST

Does anyone know how many different ways there is to escape/leave the Pitt? (Fallout New California).

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 02:27 PM PST

I'd like to save all my companions and flee with them together but I am forced to either fight through the whole raider clan or send them to a slaver and get them later and leave one of them behind entirely. I really hate the latter option but the first option feels too overwhelming to me. I think the quest dynamics were done poorly in here because I think my save is soft locked to do the "sell slaves" way because for some reason the monitor tent guy refuses to give me a quest that would help me to deactivate the collars. They should have made the Pitt completely dynamic to your choices and not soft lock you behind a quest because you didn't know what was coming up and you didn't have an option to refuse. My last save before this is from the beginning of the "Kill the Mutant" quest and I'd really hate to fight him and the next super mutant again.

Fallout 4 (Ps4) junky movement when moving camera

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 11:34 PM PST

    Does anyone have this problem?

Game doesn't stutter, it runs beautifully (unlike the OG XO version), but camera is so junky. Don't remember it was like this on the XO.

    Is this normal?

It's going to be awhile till the next fallout entry and that's okay.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 01:17 PM PST

Some of us have only played these games over and over again just vanilla alone.

However, plenty of us have modded this game even more and that adds more love to this series.

It's modders that will probably hit a lot of marks for their being so many stand-alone projects in the works.

A few being already out such as fallout new California, and let me tell you I played it and enjoyed it very much. That is just one that is out now, and you can go play for self, give the time to set it up as well.

Looking forward some more, we have fallout 4: Miami, FNV: The frontier, Fallout: Cascadia. Respective remakes/remasters of both fallout 3, and New Vegas.

Lastly I'll mention fallout UK, one that's been very under the radar but starting to catch a few eye's by people.

I really don't know when the next official fallout entry is, how realistically far it is as well, Nor do I wish to spectate on the release of these "fan" games. I mean "fan" respectively, doing this stuff for free and staying dedicated to a project like is still massive work and, plenty of undertaking for fair errors as well.

Regardless, only few will take this time to bless us with their respective releases upon the absent next single player fallout title we await to see.

It's great knowing in the future we will have more fallout to have. Only few communities make worthy spiritual games in their absents. Just look at Rom hacking for earthbound alone.

TLDR: We will have plenty of fallout to have, while we wait for the next official title.

Fonline Reloaded - Fallout 1 and 2 Fan MMO (Seeking New Players)

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 11:31 AM PST

We're seeking new players for a new Fan MMO server based off of Fallout 1 + 2.

So far, I've been having tons of fun in this game. Its crazy how they've turned 1+2 into a game where you can play with your friends. I've been doing quests (which theres TONS of), crafting unique weapons and armor, and sooooo freaking much more. This MMO has

    - Profession Based Crafting System

    - Open World Sandbox

    - Many Unique Quests

    - Multiple Vehicles for World Map Travel

    - Player Factions with Private Bases + Housing

    - Dungeons for ALL Skill Levels

    - Growing Community

    - Optional PvP

    - Faction Town Control

    - and many more features which are too many for me to remember....

As of now we're a small but growing community. The game is such a hidden gem and it NEEDS to get bigger, it deserves to be more known. As long as you legally own Fallout 2, the MMO is free to download and play. We look forward to seeing new players! - Edit - I guess posting a discord server is self promotion, so I guess DM me for the discord info?? Sorry guys.

Dead Money DLC: What are the necessary skills needed to get all the special loot in Sierra Madre?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 03:05 PM PST

Asking for skill-checks and lock-picking/hacking in the Dead Money DLC for Fallout New Vegas.

The enemies I can handle with 9 Endurance and some regeneration, but last time I went there I missed out on some skill-checks and I couldn't return to Sierra Madre when I had the sufficient skills for the checks.
