CMV: Killing Legionary assassin squads should improve your standing with the Legion.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 11:16 PM PST

The entire philosophy of the Legion is that the strong should conquer the weak. So if they send a group of their toughest soldiers to kill some random courier who pissed them off, and said courier singlehandedly rips the entire squad to shreds despite not taking the first shot, they should respect and like said courier more, as he has proven himself to be among those alphachads or whatever they so admire. Or at the very least, it should be a mark against the people you gunned down, not you. Always found it strange that the Legion gets madder at you for shooting back at the people they send to kill you like damn bitch you're supposed to be the ones who idolize the strong maybe don't send people who get their ass kicked by a jetted up mailman.

I gave Parker Quinn a taste of his own medicine today.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 06:21 AM PST

I was walking somewhere near University Point when I ran into Quinn. I asked him some questions, he kept blabbering on about some bullcrap, and then, he hit me with the question:

"It's super simple. You give me 110 caps right now, and I give you this charge card. So what do you say? Want one?"

I was intrigued. Skeptical, but intrigued. I said to myself, "It's just 110 caps, not a big deal." So I buy it from him, and he has the nerve to say this under his breath:

    "Retard."

That's when I knew he had to die. I loaded up my Junk Jet with his card and did a sneak attack critical to the dome. BOOM! Eyeballs flying everywhere, and you know the best part? I picked that stinkin' card back up and gave it Brooks for a sweet 100 caps.

    Retard.

Just got New Vegas for PC

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 08:26 PM PST

I've only ever played Fallout on console, aside from Fallout 2. Last night I discovered that my laptop had the capacity to run New Vegas, and I thought I'd give it a go. Especially with the availability of modding in weapons since weapon variety is a huge thing for me(Classic Fallout Weapons is what I went with, absolutely loving it). Holy hell is this game great on pc. Shooting feels so smooth even though I've never done mouse and keyboard shooting before. I've fallen in love with this game in a whole new way, and I just wanted to share! Can't wait to get a few more mods on there to expand it all.

Introduced my wife to Fallout 4 and she loves settlement building

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 01:50 PM PST

Due to having to stay inside more this last year, I decided to introduce my wife to gaming, and as she likes stories set in fantasy worlds I dusted off my Skyrim disc for the PS4, which she loved but was annoyed with how shallow the home building was in Hearthfire.

After she finished, she wanted to play more, so I tried her out on Fallout 4, and she preferred it a lot more, because of the more dynamic world. Obviously - a big part of that is the settlement building. Because of the grind involved in the early stages it became a team effort to gather the resources, but we have ended up buildings very substantial settlements at most of the locations - I made a highlights video of some of our favourites here:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPbHynQiAaM

It's really frustrating the limitations of mods on the PS4, because I feel she'd really enjoy the Sim Settlements mod, but while inventory management and grinding is a bit of a chore (particularly getting stuff like glass, which we needed several thousand units for for our Sunshine Tidings Coop settlement) - you can just imagine that it's actually important to the game, even if in reality you could just stick some beds in some wooden prefabs and be done with it.

It's essentially become a hybrid digital version of a Lego set / doll house with lasers.

Why was Necropolis left out of FNV?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 06:15 PM PST

Looking at the Fallout maps overlayed with a map of the US, it looks like Necropolis is either inside the border of the FNV map, or extremely close to it.

That makes me wonder, lore wise why is Necropolis never mentioned in FNV? Why does it have no link to the Mojave? Was it never rebuilt after being sacked by the Master's army during FO1? If Necropolis was hit so hard with radiation that it turned the entire local population into ghouls, how is FNV relatively radiation free (minus barrels of toxic waste)? Seems to me that Necropolis would have been an awesome setting for Lonesome Road.

Am I the only one mad about fallout 3 being broken

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 05:45 AM PST

If you buy fallout 3 on steam it doesn't run well and crashes ect. But Bethesda is still selling it. I set up ttw but I feel like you shouldn't have to spend a couple days and also own new vegas to play fallout 3 after I already had to buy it. They need to take it down or fix it right?

    Vault Suit-inspired Outfits

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 07:35 PM PST

Just wanted to share with you guys a thought I had. I tried to imagine how each of the games' protagonists would wear their vault suits, in the modern day. This is what I came up with.

For Fallout 1's Vault Dweller, I really wanted to capture the feeling of the ending cinematic. Obviously it's an iconic look, so that's what inspired the asymmetrical sleeves and leather boots. Fallout 1 took place in the deserts of southern California, so I felt sweatpants and a shirt was appropriate. I feel like the collared shirt was perfect for the Vault Dweller, since it was the right amount of casual (for wasteland adventures) and preppy (as a reminder of his vault past). The collar and placket of the shirt helped to preserve the distinctive "Y" shape of the yellow stripes on the traditional vault suit silhouette.

Since Fallout 2's Chosen One didn't exactly have much of a vault suit left, I chose the next most iconic vault dweller in the game, First Citizen Lynette of Vault City. This iteration of the vault suit had a wider collar as well as a hood, so I felt that she was best served with a hoodie. The oversized yellow undershirt also preserves the "Y" shape of the yellow stripes. Her leggings fit tighter than the other vault suits, to call back to the form-fitting rubber of the older vault suits.

In Fallout 3, the first thought that came to mind was the red sneakers of the utility jumpsuit. Completely unique to Fallout 3, and absolutely iconic, so I felt I had to include it. The vault suits in Fallout 3 were described as being made from a "more durable denim like material," so that's where the jeans came from. They were also designed with higher collars, when compared to past vault suits, so together with the sweater, fit perfectly with the Capital Wasteland. When I think of clothes in the Capital Wasteland, it definitely seems more snobby and preppy, seen in clothing vendors like New Urban Apparel and Potomac Attire. Lastly, I felt that the Pip-Boy 3000 was of particular significance to this entry in the series, as it's the first item you receive in the game. The green backlight, as well as the circular watchface (inspired by the Tranquility Lane watch) help tie the outfit together.

Thanks for taking the time to think about this subject with me. The idea was to make outfits that still spoke to each protagonists' personalities, but won't seem gaudy and out-of-place. Obviously if you saw someone with an actual vault suit walk down the street, you'd think them crazy, but if they wore something more subdued, they wouldn't seem improper at all.

Caesar is more of a Khan than he is a Caesar

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 09:05 PM PST

Okay, what's weird about Caesar is that his whole thing is that he is unifying a bunch of small tribes into a great fighting force and using that fighting force to take over a larger country that is corrupt and weak (at least in his opinion). That's not what Julius Caesar did. He took over an empire that he was already part of using an army from that empire. Now, I know that Caesar was also a title for Emperor in Rome, but that's not really what they did either.

Now, ordinarily I wouldn't notice this, except they've got another faction called the Great Khans. Do you know what Genghis Khan did? He unified a bunch of small tribes into a great fighting force that was used to take over a larger country that was corrupt and weak (even though it was Kublai who actually took over China and Genghis just laid the groundwork). That makes Caesar more like Genghis Khan than he is like Julius Caesar. The Mongols also used brutal tactics such as destroying any village that didn't surrender immediately, which is what Caesar did to a lot of Tribes.

I'm not sure whether this should lead to a grand argument that the Khans should've been the villains because they still fit the foreign old world culture bit and have more of a connection to the NCR, so it would've been about revenge for them, as opposed to Caesar just wanting stuff because he's a dick, or whether it's just a weird thing.

I can't access vats and I can't figure out if it's a glitch or im not doing it correctly. I'm new at this game and I read that hitting RB should bring it up. Doesn't work. Do I need to get a certain perk to enable it or is my game broken? Google is not helpful.

    Defending Legate Lanius

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 07:15 PM PST

EDIT: A brilliant commenter pointed out a mistake, should've said "whom"

Lately, I've been seeing a lot of criticism levied towards Legate Lanius. Saying that the last conversation with him didn't make sense, as the build up and characterisation for him up to this point made him out to a psychotic maniac, and that the idea that he can be reasoned with is ridiculous.

    I disagree.

    https://youtu.be/5z8XHe2NoAE

I will be responding to this video's specific criticisms of him.

    Without further ado...

First, he criticises the fact that Legate is mostly "show don't tell."

One of my favourite movies is Se7en; in the movie, there are 7 murders. Aside from one, the rest are never shown. Only the aftermath, and what people have to say about it. One of these murders was a man killing a woman by having sex with a bladed strap on. This, again, is never shown. However, we're told it. By the man who was forced by gunpoint to do it; he's traumatised by what he had done, mortified and scarred for life. He tells us how he did it with this tone and despite the fact that we're never shown it, it gives us a feeling of disgust and fear over what happened. Who would do this? What monster must this person be?

My point is, telling can be a great storytelling technique. It can build up to something, like the above scene did. By using other's experiences and what the characters tell us, we can get an image and almost be fearful of this monstrous man. Telling can be good and in this case, it is. Caesar, who's done horrible horrible acts considers Lanius "savage". Everyone fears him for what he does to commanders who fail. He's the Legion materialised; brutal, unforgiving and psychopathic.

Next, he says Legate's characterisation is inconsistent by using examples. But, that's the point; he's a force of nature, he's unknown; nobody really knows who or what he is. This makes his appearance all the more mystifying and challenging.

"At least when Autumn surrendered, it vaguely made sense: Lanius? A man, who according to his own slightly dubious backstory was so obsessed with fighting that he turned on his own tribe and started attacking to the point of mutilation? A man who Caesar says specifically has no love for the Legion, and is just a butcher personally loyal to Caesar alone? He is going to back down when faced with the arguement that California is a bit big and that it would stretch the Legion out? Yeah, I don't think he's the type of guy to get convinced to play it safe in risk of conquering too much"

He also makes the point that "Lanius doesn't require both charisma and speech, therefore it doesn't work as well", which... Doesn't make that much sense, considering you don't have to be charismatic to make intelligent and well rounded points.

On that, let's defend this: this is the most commonly argument against Lanius, how can he be convinced to leave?

Well, in order to convince him, you need to have 100 barter/speech. If you need to be perfect at talking and knowing about bartering in order to get through to someone, do you think they're a reasonable person? If you need the absolute best of the best to even TALK to this person without getting murdered, does that show sanity? Does it show he's willing to listen? Or that he's so psychotic, that you need to be the best talker of all time to tell him to slow down?

Not even Ulysses needed 100 speech. That shows how stubborn and unwilling Lanius is to listen. In fact, he threatens to kill about three times into the conversation. His whole plan was to murder you until you brought out an inarguable point?

He also brings up the backstory of him murdering his tribe; for one, we don't know the circumstance behind the surrender, so it's pointless to use it as a comparison point. If Lanius was so hesitant and against surrendering at Hoover Dam because he thought he would win, albeit convinced at the end, wouldn't it be safe to assume this is the case for that tribes surrender? That he simply thought he couldn't lose? Furthermore, that entire backstory is meant to be build him up as a threat. Why do you think he needed 100 speech to convince? Because it's been acknowledged he isn't the listening type, it's supposed to be the greatest test of your wit, your ability to convince someone. That's why the 100 speech check is there, because he is that person. He is the final boss to test your every ability, whether it be combat or dialogue.

    Also, consider this:

Both ways you can convince Lanius are either:

    A. The battle is lost and he can't win it.

    Or

    B. Even if he wins, the Legion will be destroyed eventually.

    To use two points again:

    1. This YouTuber acknowledged Ulysses in his rant about Lanius, so weirdly enough, he left out Ulysses' explanation of Lanius' weakness; if he knows he can't win, he won't risk it. Now, I know the response to this already but the tribe thing doesn't work either, because all we know is that the tribe decided they would surrender, not Lanius, so we don't know why he didn't want to surrender. If the last conversation with him and Ulysses' explanation of him are indicative of anything, he only surrenders if he knows he will lose. This is because he doesn't want to risk losing his reputation as the monster of the East.

Going off of this, you can explain to him that, either way, he will destroy the Legion and himself.

Now, why would he care for the Legion? Well, he doesn't, as MATN points out. Do you know whom he does care for? Caesar. The only reason he carries out the battle of Hoover Dam when Caesar's dead is because he believes it to be Caesar's will. Even in death, he follows Caesar, meaning he obviously wants to lead the Legion and have it survive. If he tries this hard with taking Hoover Dam when Caesar's dead because he believes it to be what he wants, don't you think he might want the Legion to live?

This makes it even more the case when Caesar's alive when you try to take over Hoover Dam.

    And secondly...

Lanius loves war. Loves it. He's a genius when it comes to it. If you convince him that he'll lose if he keeps fighting, don't you think, as a war genius, he might realize "hey, it might be smarter if I wait a bit to strengthen my army so I have a chance?" And don't you think if he loves war, he might want to have a chance to continue the Legion's war path?

Speaking of which, you don't even convince him to surrender, at least not in the technical sense. At the end of each speech checks, he says "I will come back, stronger." He isn't surrendering, he's living to fight to another day. You don't convince him to leave forever, you don't convince him that Hoover Dam isn't worth fighting for at all, you convince him that it would be smarter if he waits to strengthen his army so he has a chance.

So basically.... You convince a war hungry psychopath that if he waits a bit, he will have the strength to continue being a war hungry psychopath. How..... Doesn't that make sense?

    Anyway that's it bye
