Should I install graphic mods for a replay or keep it vanilla? My beef with graphic mods:

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 09:25 AM PST

I want to reinstall my favourite rpg of all time and of course give it the necessary mods that will keep the game more stable but also leave it untouched and vanilla. I thought about giving graphics mod a chance but my trouble with these mods is that they give some parts of the world a hd rework while leaving other assets untouched like for example energy weapons. I haven't found a good energy weapons retexture mod (EVE weapons are ugly and I hate the gameplay changes). Are there graphic mods that you guys consider must have or just go for vanilla playthroughs?

Just finished New Vegas for the first time

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 07:13 AM PST

Just finished New Vegas. I did a Legion run (please don't crucify me), and I enjoyed it a lot. Had a tough showdown with the rangers at the end, and when the endgame cutscene came I felt pretty satisfied to see all sorts of questions answered. Then the credits came. Then nothing. I found out then, that completing the main quest completes the game, no turning back. I knew it would change New Vegas, but I didn't know I wouldn't be able to go back to New Vegas at all!

I'm annoyed especially because I had DLC content I was hoping to play but I said to myself "I'll do them after I complete the main quest". Ultimately it doesn't matter because I'm gonna play it again anyway. But it still annoys me that I've built up a character, made them grow from just another nobody in Goodsprings to Caeser's right hand man.

Is there some mod out there that fixes this by the way? If anyone knows one I would greatly appreciate it

Help, game keeps crashing on w10

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 03:11 AM PST

I've got about 50 mods, the game used to run on Windows 8 pretty okay, sure it would crash now and then, but like once every 5th session. More often if I had just messed with mods obviously. Now it just crashes anytime it pleases often for seemingly no reason.

In the middle of battle, loading screens, just walking, standing still, in the menu. It just freezes and completely stops responding while windows sees it as running still.

If it was always at cell changes, when a bunch of entities were around or just loading it'd be easier to figure out, but as of right now it just stops working because windows 10, that's why or some fucking bullshit.

I have nvac, anti stutter, the 4gb patch, nvse, nvse but the extended one dunno what else performance mods I have, but basically I dunno what to do.

    Returning Courier!!

I'm back as the Courier for the first time since 2012 and I was hoping the community could give me a list of the must do side quests. It's been a long time and a quick refresher would be awesome!

Is anyone here familiar with how the stealth system works?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 11:02 PM PST

The wiki does not contain an indepth explanation and it does not contain the formula for how your detection value is calculated.

What I have managed to piece together is this : To be hidden, your sneak value has to be at least 0. At -20, you are at caution. The level of light, sound, your sneak skill, your distance to the enemy, and your level in relation to the enemy's level seems to be the main factors but I dont know what the formula is like.

Theres a bunch of sneak related game settings in the GECK but nobody seems to have any clue what they do and it is not documented on any GECK wiki that i can find.

It doesnt seem like anyone has any interest in making sneak mod either...the nexus shows almost no sneak mods, and all of them are very old.

My main issues with the sneak system :

    • If you are not in sneak mode, enemies can magically detect you through multiple walls even if you are just standing still and doing nothing. If you are in hidden mode and stand up for a second, then sneak again, you will instantly be put into CAUTION even though all you did was stand up and there are multiple walls between you and the nearest enemy.

    • If an enemy finds a corpse, they will stay in permanent CAUTION mode forever while pacing around the corpse. This completely defeats the point of a stealth based approach in most areas. You rarely have the luxury of dragging the corpse out of sight before a nearby enemy stumbles onto it because there are usually two or more enemies near each other.

    • Enemies magically know that an ally has been killed nearby and will race to their corpse, even if they have no LOS to it when they were killed. Ever killed a guard on patrol in one hit, only for another guard to turn around and race to the corpse from far off? Silencers do not make appear to make a difference.

    • Any faction that has "track crime" ticked magically knows you are the killer, even if there are no witnesses available. Sniped Simon at th entrance to the Van Graff casino in one hit? Everyone inside instantly knows you are responsible. Some quests even have scripts setup so that the moment you kill or hit an NPC, everyone in that faction goes hostile, and it doesnt matter if you were detected or not.

    • Sleeping enemies are surpringly observant even though they supposedly have a penalty to detection.

    • Most NPCs never sleep because they have no sleep packages assigned. Want to stealth kill the powder gangers in the NCR CF? They never sleep, ever and just chill in a room full of guys 24/7. Want to stealth your way past the van graffs to find evidence? They never sleep, ever, and there is only one entrance to the evidence which is a locked door flanked by guards.

Edit : Just found this, this seems informative at least : https://geckwiki.com/index.php/Category:Detection#Detection_Value
