Takoma Park is amazing, and should be a standard for designing an area in a modern Fallout game.

It's a miniature sandbox. The area starts off fairly linear, but soon opens up, and some paths even loop back on themselves. Three of the main "large" areas are almost hidden, and feel very natural to explore. Even the final, irradiated zone feels like you're breaking the map boundaries and stumbling upon something special when you find out you can even go there. I'd bet over half of Fo3 players never visit Isabella Proud's camp, which provides a bit of decent loot and some awesome flair lore about Ghouls.

There's plenty of rare, scripted events, like the Super Mutant trap with them shooting at the cars, similar to Arkansas, or the Behemoth later on. There's other traps (both natural and placed), as well as some other scripted events if you own Broken Steel and are past the main quest.

And when you're done exploring, Talon Company mercs spawn along the path back to the exit, giving you something to do during the trek back without just including the Skyrim shortcut to the beginning of an area. Oh, and you can use their artillery systems against the Behemoth, something you only see once or twice in the rest of the game.

The best part: The entire area and its sub-areas are entirely optional. It's actually kind of hard to get here, you have to travel quite a few out-of-the way metros and go through some tough, winding zones in the D.C. ruins.

The D.C. ruins are weak and silly in a lot of places, namely due to the technical limitations Bethesda faced when making Fallout 3. Fallout 4 shows us what a decent urban city can look like in a Fallout game, but Takoma Park was an amazing vertical slice and feels like one of the most complete areas in Fallout 3. I've never been the biggest Fo3 fan, but replaying this area is always a treat.

Any other hidden, off-the-beaten-path, or obscure areas in the games that you're a fan of?

What if the Mysterious Stranger is the nameless narrator for the series? (aka Ron Perlman)

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 07:51 AM PST

Just a rough theory, but think about it.

He's in every single game in the entire series from FO1 to FO76, even in Fallout Shelter. (Although FO Shelter doesn't really matter.)

Bethesda describes him as an "eldritch entity" as well as a guardian angel.

Other than Fallout 4 in which the male protagonist narrates the intro, he seems to know everything about your character and what mark you'll leave on the Wasteland in the respective game you're playing, almost as if he's watching you and knows your destiny. Who's to say he's not the stranger to aid you in your path?

    Just a fun shower thought.

I believe that fallout 4 confirms that all of the mysterious strangers are the same person

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 05:44 PM PST

So I saw another post theorizing that the mysterious stranger could be the vaulttec rep in 4, which is clearly wrong, but it got me thinking. Someone pointed out that the rep becomes a ghoul in the blast and the stranger us obviously not a ghoul, but I remember that valentine's notes mention the appearances of the stranger, pointing to it being the same person. And if I remember correctly he also mentioned possibly being a ghoul, while this may be seen as debunking his theory about it being the same person bc he's clearly not a ghoul, I believe that he's just missing the piece to put it all together. And I believe that piece comes in the very same game, they call themselves the Cabots. I may not be the first person to think of this, but the fact that the first time a game states that it could be the same person and the first time a game gave an alternative immortality to ghoulification can't be a coincidence.

I want some kind of transportation

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 11:09 PM PST

So as far as I know there is no drivable vehicles in the fallout games at least since 3, but skyrim has horses and only horses imagine if fallout had motorcycles we know they exist in the fallout universe and it could have been a quest for the atom cats where you go around the common wealth and collect parts and then build the motorcycle, im tired of just walking to new locations it takes forever and I have to deal with encounters i honestly don't want to deal with. So yeah me and my friends agree what are your thoughts?

    Finally got Fallout 76

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 08:35 PM PST

Finally Ponied up the cash and bought 76 after i heard "it was finally good". At first i was a little shook on what the heck i was doing, but after about what i thought was 2 hours, which turned out to be like 4 hours, i got the hang of the basics and i was really enjoying it.

If anyone at any point wants to jump in game together just let me know and i will.

Is there a Fallout lore podcast?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 02:45 PM PST

I have found one. But they as of late switched to mostly things about 76 and updates. Im looking for a podcast that would discuss lore and interesting facts. Does something like that exsist?

Should I rig the megaton bomb or get the skills to defuse it

did any cities besides vegas survive the war

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 06:42 PM PST

ok hear me out obviously any state capitol or large city would be screwed in a nuclear war because they are political and manufacturing hubs but what about somewhere like Ritzville WA or Missoula Montana or broken bow Nebraska you know smaller cities that would be lower priority targets for all we know there's some tiny little town in utah or kansas or iowa that didn't even know the bombs went off until they noticed the lack of outside contact

I wish there was going to be more than 1 game every fifteen years so that they could have more room to try stuff out.

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 12:02 PM PST

It'd be so nice if we could get a game like, once every 3 years, and then we could be like, "huh, this one had some weird systems, I hope by 3 years from now they'll have refined it and made it more interesting. " as opposed to now where it's like: "well, that was a weird system, I hope they have something better in 15 years". Like, there are a lot of things I'd like to see them try out, like an Elder Scrolls style skills system, but it might not work, and I don't want to have to wait 15 years after it doesn't work to get a better system, y'know. I just think if there was one every 3 years or even 5 there would be more room for them to make mistakes or just try new things, and we wouldn't have to be sad and bitter for the next decade as we wait to see if they're going to get better.

You guy's get where I'm coming from, right?

Edit/Addendum: Even if they had a team that was just making an asset flip every 3 years, just reusing assets from 4 and 76 while slowly accumulating more weapons and trying new mechanics. I don't even need better graphics or new models, even though I suppose they'd still need to upgrade to the starfield engine at some point.

Digital download of Fallout 4 GOTY. Will it work with physical Fallout 4?? (PS4)

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 04:16 AM PST

Hi just after some advice, I have searched this topic and it's a complete split of opinion. Please could anyone clarify that on PS4 if I download the GOTY edition off the PS store, it will pick up my physical copy Fallout 4 saves. So it will just carry on but with the addition of the DLC's. If not then what does happen? Thanks

Strange coincidence 3 years before Fallout 4's release

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 09:56 PM PST

    http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/17649217/

Found a weird coincidence while going through the 4chan archives. I'm just glad Bethesda resisted the urge to make Salem a puritan-themed witch-hunting town like everyone else does, looking at you Fallout Frost, or do something with the Boston marathon. Some of their ideas like the aquarium or the academy are just too looney to work. This brings me to the question I wanted to ask, and it's not whether TG's Commonwealth is better than Bethesda's, because it's not. You can slap together a bunch of awesome ideas, but if you don't integrate them you just have a pile of ideas. Halfway through the thread they ran out of ideas and reintroduced the Enclave and a puritan themed-Caesar's Legion, and I think we can agree that, regardless of how disappointing or satisfying you found the Institute was as villains, they at least weren't a reheated rehash of past enemies. The question I wanted to ask was whether the Commonwealth struck anyone else as too tame and mundane when compared to the Mojave or the Capital wasteland? You had occasionally pockets of madness and amusing insanity, like the Atom Cats, that long-dead weirdo who set up a launchpad for gas tanks, or the raider chieftain who took over an old arcade and paid his krewe in tokens, but overall it felt a little too sane for my taste. Most of the people who weren't raiders were a little on edge over the Institute, but overall fairly sane and content with their lives. No one except for Ironside was trying to do anything truly crazy. Am I wrong here and just kvetching?

fallout 4 cant detect my graphics card?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 03:10 AM PST

hi, i just bought my first PC and im pretty new to this world. i just bought Fallout 4 GOTY and i want to run it on maximum settings as possible. when i run the launcher a message pops up saying the game cant detect my graphics card and the resolution is stuck on 800X500 on 16:10 ratio, when im using a 2560X1080 with 21:9 ratio screen.

    my specs:

AMD Ryzen 7 3700X NVIDIA RTX 2080 SUPER 16GB RAM

is there anything i can do to bypass this? also, is there any other way to improve the graphics and performance?

i also had troubles trying to set up the G-SYNC, but i think thats off topic.

any help would be much appreciated!

EDIT: i tried to set the resolution in the Fallout4Prefs.ini file, but the the game runs in a little square at the top left of the screen with no audio and about 5 fps and in 144p no matter what i change in the file. i am absolutely lost unfortunately :(

Fallout 3 bricking up after loading a save/new game

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 03:09 AM PST

You've probably seen something like this a million times by now but after I get past the title screen and try to play the game it just crashes as soon as the loading screen starts. I'm not finding any tutorials that help anywhere, probably been trying 6 different methods over and over again to no avail thinking I'm missing something. I'm lost here and could use a bit of help.

    Things i've tried already:

Installing Games for Windows Live Disabler mod

    Adding bUseThreadedAI=1 and iNumHWThreads=2.

Running in Compatibility Mode (Windows XP (Service Pack 2) and Windows 7)

    Run as Admin

    help im cheesed

New to the series, is there one I should start with, or can I just jump right in to 3 and move forward from there?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 07:18 PM PST

Looking to grab some cheap PC game deals this BF and I've never played Fallout despite hearing so much about it.

I've heard 3,4, and NV are the ones to play and 76 is one to avoid, or at least save for last. I won't be missing anything from 1 and 2 by starting with 3, story-wise, right?

    Just finished Fo3

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 09:45 PM PST

I just finished Fallout 3 today and I have broken steel installed so I didn't really worry about completing project purity at level 14 but now I can't play further. Was I mistaken in thinking broken steel was after the main storyline and is that just the end of the game? (I have all the DLCs installed if that helps, thanks)

Sanctuary decided to randomly attack me and I don’t know why.

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 07:07 PM PST

So I was trying to get the last Tesla mag from mass fusion and realized I needed a jet pack to do it without progressing the main quest, which was currently at the teleporter stage. I went back to sanctuary to make it and for some reason all my adhesive and aluminum was gone.

I swore I had plenty before and I knew I was picking it up all over the place but whatever. I go and buy some stuff from diamond city and fast travel back, and then go to see what else I need for the jet pack. I activated it while the vault rep was using the station, and suddenly everyone is hostile to me, codsworth, the rep, and everyone else except ada for some reason.

I haven't recruited any normal settlers, only followers and specific npcs like the rep and Sheffield. I have no clue what happened and I'm scared to continue playing in case my file is fucked.

Anyone know what might have happened/is happening?

And no, I don't have a jet pack yet, I was trying to make one when I got attacked.

    Grim Reaper's Sprint Perk Noise

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 05:29 PM PST

I'm not here to recommend they change the noise (but it would be really nice if they did), I'm just here to talk about how fucking loud the gong is when your character uses the Grim Reaper's Sprint perk.

I swear to god, I feel like I am going to get a headache when I use VATS, might as well just ditch the idea of VATS at this point.

The noise fucking woke my mom up at 3 in the morning with my volume almost down to the lowest.

To summarize it: The Grim Reaper Sprint perk noise pisses me off a bunch.
