    The Khans and Letting Go

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 07:40 PM PDT

As most of you are aware the main theme of new vegas is "Letting go" and "old world blues." Every (humanoid) companion has a quest about either letting go of the past or holding onto it. Every DLC talks about it at least a little bit and the Legion and the NCR are shadows of pre-war nations that hold onto the spirit of civilizations that collapsed. while at times this theme is bitter-sweet, with Lily the super mutant forgetting her grand children, Veronica being unable to join the followers, or Raul still kind of seeing himself as weak. But as a whole the benefits of letting go tend to outway the costs.

However the great khans seem to be an exception to this rule

The khans have a few endings, let's go over them.

    1. The khans join the legion-this leads to the khans getting their revenge but all women of the tribe being enslaved and the khans losing their indentity. In this case the theme does hold up, as the khan's inability to let go of their revenge leads to the khans destroying themselves

    2. The khans are wiped out by the courier, the NCR, or the Legion-All essentially the same, some survive and relocate north and the future of the khans is uncertain.

    3. The khans are relocated by the NCR- the khans essentially become a modern native american tribe, they are given a barren reservation and essentially live poverty far from the eyes of the public. They let go of their fued with the NCR and things are better than they are with the legion but not great.

    4. the Khans form an empire with the followers of the apoclypse after being convinced to claim their legacy. Many see this as the "good" ending they go north and form a mighty empire. At first some might fear what claiming their legacy means as they are based of off the mongols and the mongols under gheghis khan where closer to the legion than the NCR, but they also reconnect with the followers. Considering the followers are according to Josh Sawyer "range from anarcho-syndicalists to socialists to communists." I highly doubt the empire they build with the khans is a genghis khan style one. Yet this ending feels strange themetically the khans don't let go they hold onto their past, yet this creates an ending that is undeniably good. They form some kind of progressive nation in the north build on leftists value and by the way the slide describes it, it's working pretty well. If anything this is the best ending in the game yet it completely contradicts the theme of letting go. maybe the khans let go of the their fued with the legion and the ncr, but they don't really they just accept that it's a fight they can't win. this ending completely contradicts the theme and that makes it fascinating to me.

    5. The khans lead a sucide attack on the fort after letting go of their legacy-The khans are completely wiped out for letting go of their legacy, again this completely contradicts the theme of letting go, maybe the khans are remembered as martyrs but that's not as good as forming a benevelont empire. Also they're letting go of the khans but not exactly in a healthy way.

I don't really have a conclusion to this, this is all just an interesting observation I made, anyone have any thoughts on this. did the writers have an intent with this? Perhaps ending 4 has some caveat that we've all overlooked

Emil Pagliarulo talks about the canonicity of Creation Club, the Atomic Shop, and the Fallout Bible at Gamescon 2020

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 09:28 AM PDT

During a Q&A as part of Gamescon 2020 with Jeff Gardener and hosted by Alina Ullrich, Emil Pagliarulo answered questions regarding the canonicity of the Creation Club and Atomic Shop.

    Creation Club Clip

CC Pt 2 + Atomic Shop Clip

In these clips, Emil describes Creation Club as parallel/adjacent to canon. "It could be canon" were his exact words. Atomic shop, on the other hand, he describes as "not be canon so much", and says the guidelines for creating Atomic Shop content is a lot looser.

About half an hour later, he answers a question about the Fallout Bible.

    Fallout Bible Clip

He explicitly says in this clip that not everything in the Bible is canon, and what is in the games takes priority over anything else. He also mentions that some of what is in tactics is canon, likely refering to the Midwestern BoS airships.

Why does James leave his things behind in the Vault Clinic Safe?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 10:58 PM PDT

In the Vault 101 Clinic, there is a hidden Safe that contains 300 Caps, Schematics for a Rock-It Launcher weapon and a Holotape Recording made during the Baby Steps part of the main story. The Caps and Schematics would give anyone a slight head start in the Wasteland, especially if he could use the caps to buy parts for the Weapon in Megaton, which is close by, but he just leaves them in the Safe. I know that stuff isn't for the Lone Wanderer, because James didn't want them to leave the safety of the Vault, so why does he leave them behind? Those are the exact kinds of things you would hide away in case you need to leave the Vault in a hurry.

    Is Cait really Irish?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 10:07 PM PDT

Playing through Fallout 4. (not for the first time, but the first time I've gotten this far with companions and such) And I was wondering... Is Cait really Irish?

I know this is a topic that has been talked about before. I frequent a lot of Fallout communities, but I am wondering if anyone has any solid evidence for anything now that the game has been out for so long. Thought I'd bump this discussion to the top considering I doubt people are actively discussing this minute detail.

Why do power armoured enemies collapse when killed?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 02:01 AM PDT

Power armour now stands up by itself, and you step into the suit. The suit presumably carries your weight and you 'drive' it as oppose to wear it and move the suit as such.

When you aren't in the suit it stands up by itself, so that appears to be its neutral state.

If this is the case, why when you kill someone in power armour do they go floppy and collapse, instead of their dead corpse being suspended in the damage suit that is still standing (unless the suit is completely destroyed)?

    Thanks

Why are buildings in Boston boarded up?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 12:37 PM PDT

Presumably people died where they were at when the nukes fell. For example, Campus Diner is all boarded up, however there are skeletons of "customers" still in the booths. Presumably there since the nukes fell. Why is that?

(I know the real reason is to keep you out of certain areas for game size, etc.)

Structure of Command within the NCR Military (and other militaries)

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 04:22 AM PDT

Is there any reference on what the structure of command is for all of the with-ranking factions? (Enclave, NCR, Gunners, Talon Company, etc)
