How can I avoid gimping my characters in the long term? Experts required.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 08:24 AM PDT

Note: I hate sounding like an ass, really, but I have to ask that if you want to have a go at helping an idiot like me, please read the post before answering so you can have the best idea of exactly what I'm talking about. I know it may sound rude of me to ask, and I apologize, but answers can become really confusing when some people know exactly what I mean, and others are just guessing based on the title. Thank you.

I'm kind of stupid and dislike having "gimped" characters in games, and want to avoid that as much as possible, WITHOUT cheating. When I say gimping, I'm talking about choosing skills/levelling up my character in an objectively inferior way which leads to my character being objectively weaker than what they could have been if I had a little more foresight into what would happen later.

For example, I played this game a long time ago and recall there was a perk or something that gave you an extra skill point from reading books, which makes it seem like if you had already read some books and got that perk or whatever later, you would therefore have a permanently gimped character who missed out on potential points, due to the fact that you read books before getting that perk. At the same time, if it was possible to gain max skill points anyway, then technically picking that perk was a waste, since once you get to your characters max level, you now have a completely worthless perk that you can't remove. I remember I made this mistake in Dead Island, where I took a skill that made me level up faster, only to realize that, end-game, you couldn't re-spec skills, and those were 3 wasted points.

I know this was extremely easy to do in Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, and I figure it's possible here as well. I'm not knowledgeable in Fallout or NV at all (only ever played a few hours), but I do remember hearing that you could somehow increase certain special skills at later points in the game, like Strength or something, which meant that if you maxed strength at the start of the game, BAM, your character is gimped, since you could have gotten a few points into it for free later on, and invested those points into some other special stat earlier, but now, that's all wasted forever. Or if you were to pick a perk or something that gave you more skill points, and then another one that gave you even more skill points, but you would have reached the max level possible without it, then that's wasted as well.

I'm not necessarily looking for perfection in one area if it specifically means sacrificing something else of value. For example, if I could have an extra special skill point or something, but I had to completely give up a perk to get it, I don't view that as an objective improvement. If I could have 10 higher points in laser guns, but have to sacrifice 1 point in medicine, I don't view that as an objective improvement. I'm more looking to avoid any potential instance where I make a choice with my character that will later on mean that I've locked myself out of an objectively better set of statistics (like that special example, where it would be wiser to invest less special points into certain areas since some can be boosted in game, but you can't boost them if you set them to max at start).

I know this is kind of asking a lot, but could anyone provide me some information about how I can avoid this worry, and the things I need to be conscious of to avoid gimping myself?

    Much appreciated. Thank you.

End of level 1 Dead Money

Every quest and DLC name on this game are pure fire!

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 09:33 AM PDT

I'm one of those lucky few who only now are fully experiencing New Vegas in its entirety (don't believe me? check my recent posts). I've played FO3 'til exhaustion and went through a long time without a PC to play anything. When I've finally saved enough to build a decent rig, FO4 was out and the similarities of NV with FO3 (in the exterior, of course) pushed me to play FO4 for the novelty factor.

And, being my first time in a lot of things in the game, I gotta praise how cool every quest's and DLC's names sound. 'Ghost Town Gunfight', 'Come Fly With Me', 'Honest Hearts', 'Old World Blues'. Not to mention the obvious references to songs, like 'One for My Baby'. This adds a lot to the atmosphere of the game and fills the player with excitement like this game was recently released. I know there's a lot more out there, but I haven't played that much yet.

Does anyone else share this enthusiasm for this specific aspect?

I did everything the wiki told me to, I talked to Manny vargas first, then I got his history points. I talked to him about bitter springs. And I fast traveled. Instead of saying the quest trigger, he just hi with no voice line recorded and brings me to his normal talk menu and then proceeds to stand still till the end of time. How do i fix this? It happened with me with niner too, I went to the gas station with him, then he said hi and brought be with his normal talk menu. I don't know what is causing this hi thing

    Need help with crashing game

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 06:04 AM PDT

I've been playing with mods for years now. Same mods every play through that I installed all those years ago. Suddenly now, on my yearly play through, I crash every 5-30 mins. I've never had this much of an issue with crashing. Any advice? I was hoping I wouldn't have to, but I think deleting the mod folder and a reinstall my be necessary. Any help would be appreciated.
