Posted: 28 Jun 2020 08:52 PM PDT In the middle of a fresh playthrough of New Vegas, I've concluded that the only real way to actually preserve the NCR's moral spirit is to prevent their imperialistic conquest of the Mojave from being fully realised. Think about it for a moment; thinking about the reasons why the NCR have undertaken this whole venture in Nevada, and it slowly becomes clear that not only are they overstretched, overextended and poorly positioned, but the core tenets of the Republic's founding principles are slowly being eroded in favour of a naked desire for territory and wealth. In no uncertain terms, the state of the NCR in 2281 is a pretty upsetting one. Hawkish senators and a hardball President are slowly starting to change the NCR's core political spirit from benevolent, responsible governance to reactionary, hard-nosed warhawkery. This has had an effect on how the NCR conducts itself not only in its wider strategic operations (Mojave Campaign) but also on the ground-level, moment-to-moment decisions made by the military - Bitter Springs, for example. Couple this with intolerable levels of corruption at the top brass of government - brahmin barons and wealthy landowners effectively have unelected control over a large part of the political process, threatening the NCR's very purpose as a democratic republic. If the NCR are allowed to seize Hoover Dam and consolidate control over the Mojave, then Kimball, Oliver and all the other hawks in the Senate are vindicated, and the core spirit of the NCR might be irrevocably changed for the worse. Continuing down this path, they could very well end up like the pre-War US and may be doomed to repeat its warmongering mistakes that led to the Great War. By taking the Dam they demonstrate the righteousness of Kimball's 'might makes right' approach. Think about when Caesar talks about Hegelian Dialectics. He talks about it in reference to the Legion and what they would absorb from the NCR if they were to conquer it - specifically, the mentions the synthesis between the two factions yielding a synthesis between the NCR's apparatus and some of its values, merged with the Legion's focus and strength. What if we take this and flip it to the other side? What would the NCR absorb from the Legion? Maybe the NCR's victory over Caesar would result in a merging of the Legion's principles with the NCR in much the same way. Already, the NCR bear some Legion traits - even Caesar himself speaks admirably of Kimball's hardline stance, probably because he respects his uncompromising dictatorial style of presidency - similar to Caesar in many respects. Maybe an NCR victory over the Legion would infect the NCR with its poison. What would become of the NCR then? With this in mind, it occurs to me that if you truly cared about the NCR, what it stood for, what it still stands for at its heart even despite all that threatens it, then you would stop them from winning at Hoover Dam. The NCR is in desperate need of reform, and the only way to do that is to humiliate Kimball, Oliver and all the other hawks who staked their entire careers on the conquest of the Mojave. By stopping the opportunists in the Senate from realising their plans, you give the Republic a chance to regain its footing. Failure in the Mojave would be good for the NCR (as long as this failure isnt to the Legion, who would surely invade their territories). It would give them a chance to collectively look at themselves and what they've become and hopefully decide to change for the better. The best scenario for realising this is; Commit to an Independent Vegas to eject the NCR and prematurely end their costly campaign, Save Kimball at Hoover Dam so he doesn't become a martyr, spare Oliver for the same reason, don't expose Chief Hanlon so that he can be elected to office (his anti-imperialist bent would be a perfect, respected voice to rally around for reformists), and destroy the Legion at the Fort to remove them as the NCR's enemy. I also assassinated Heck Gunderson, as he is undoubtedly the wealthiest brahmin baron and rancher in the Republic and has a significant swathe of the political process in his back pocket - he is also a ruthless and intemperate opportunist who has rolled over countless smaller ranchers, using violence and intimdation to do so (he's only the head of the snake, but its a step in the right direction against corruption). To save the NCR, you have to work against their interests in the Mojave. It'll be difficult for NCR-supporting players to do, but ultimately, it is their soul of the Republic itself that is worth fighting for, not their own personal Vietnam. [link] [comments] | ||

Posted: 29 Jun 2020 05:17 AM PDT Having stumbled across the survivalist terminal entries and reading his entire story, I found it one of the most fascinating and heartbreaking tales of the wastes. From witnessing the eradication of SLC, and seeing the death of his family, carrying that guilt and mourning for the rest of his life, struggling against the fallout and post apocalyptic world, finding and losing love again, along with another child. Then his guidance and nurturing of the Sorrows. I find myself thinking it would make a great miniseries or something. I find myself wondering about his motivation, and the legacy he leaves behind, how an ordinary man builds a society and so much good. Could he have done more, or less. Underrated unmarked quest, learning his life story. Reading the final note on red gate was just sobering. Some reason i find many of the stories you read kn terminals and holotapes quite boring or uninvolved but this one i found touching and relatable Just a topic of appreciation I guess. Posted: 29 Jun 2020 06:33 AM PDT I'm pretty sure this is intentional by the developers but I think it's a master stroke of design to make the 'civilized' parts of the world far more miserable and less desirable than the wastelands/less developed places you've come from. I spent my playthrough working my way around the usual route. Heading south from Goodsprings and working anticlockwise from there. I explored A LOT. Every location I could find outside of new vegas I went to. All along the way I bumped in to people that told me the strip wasn't worth it, they'd only been there once and just lost all their caps and hated the place etc... All the time I had this glowing lure to the north of the Lucky 38 tower, the bright lights of the strip - it felt like an exciting, interesting place and I was excited to finally get there after ~70 or so hours of exploring - only when you get there... it's terrible. My personal vision of hell. Freeside is a shithole full of addicts, homeless, prostitutes and thugs. You complete quests where you convince people to whore themselves out for caps and to satisfy other's perversions, you take an advanced, productive robot and reduce them to a sex slave. Your character noticeably changes too, your chat options become more flirty, more willing to do illegal things, just downright dark in places. The Strip is no better - the casinos are drab, depressing places, poorly lit, ultimately not a whole lot to do, not that entertaining and full of downtrodden depressed people and prostitutes equally desperate to get away. The gambling tables are dirty etc. Even the Ultra-Luxe appears nice walking around a little but you go backstage to the kitchens and it's just as dark and horrible as everywhere else. And of course there's that other dark, dark secret... There's a fake vault, designed for tourists looking for that "real vault experience" - but it's nothing like the real experience you've already had 2-3 times before reaching this point if you follow the usual trek so you can see through how fake and plastic it is by this point. I got seriously down around this point of the game, I know it's only a game but it really hit home to me how empty and depressing places like the real Las Vegas ultimately are. I think it's incredibly well designed in that way - I was hoping and expecting it to be a fun area, full of cool, interesting people, a nice rest from the beige wastes. Instead I found myself rushing to get back out to the wilds and squash some gecko's and radscorpions and to find deeper more interesting conversation than I can find in New Vegas rather than spend another minute in a worn out gambling room. Maybe some of this was down to the the role and ethics of the character I was trying to play with, but equally I think the developers do a great job of showing you that all that glitters is not gold.... I've modded fo4, skyrim, and fo3, and I give up on NV Posted: 29 Jun 2020 08:09 AM PDT I got the texture packs, which are honestly underwhelming, but everything else resulted in some sort of weird error. I spent hours researching and resolving issues, and trying different things like ENB and NV reloaded, and they either really seem to do very little or just wreck my PC which isn't even a slow one, the weakest link being a 960GTX card. I'm tired. I'm sorry if this seems like a pointless rant but I'm tired of being told to try a different mod altogether every single time I can't get the previous janky one to work. Last straw was just reading the instructions for the latest and greatest (actually it probably isn't because every time I think I've found the current popular mod it turns out I'm behind) viva las vegas. Like fuck this. I'm done. NV isn't a religion, and I can't spend any more time on this. DM me if you think you can really help without it taking up several more hours of my life or if you know of a premodded archive like there should always be for things with this many steps. Not following this topic, so has to be DM not replies topic, which I'm sure will be very polite, as I won't see them. Fuck. [link] [comments] |
