I present to you, my cumulative effort over many years, my rehashed set of rules for a Fallout Paper and Pencil Tabletop RPG, heavily altered and balanced from the original rules written by Jason Mical converting the original computer game to tabletop format.

Here is my full efforts over many years to revise and balance a full Tabletop system for RPG games in the Fallout setting. Taking inspiration from all of the old and modern fallout games, I have compiled designs to add depth to the game and gameplay, balance perks and skills, and create a better system for running enjoyable paper and pencil games without requiring a calculator to make a simple attack roll. In all 74 pages of its glory.

There is still some jank here and there, but this is my last major revision. This ruleset has seen extensive gameplay over about 6 years of testing and changing, probably about 300 hours or so formatting and testing it, and quite a lot of time playing too!

Give it a look! And enjoy your time in the wasteland ;)

The divide between New Vegas and FO3/4 only exists because people treat them the same.

    Posted: 03 May 2020 09:36 AM PDT

I'll first begin by stating my biases. New Vegas is my favourite game of all time, and 3/4 don't really come close for me.

I believe the only reason people who play one Fallout game to death before hating another is because they look similar, but their design philosophies are completely different.

Fallout 3 and 4 are more for exploration than a story. You can do the first few quests, hit your auto-walk key and find something to do. You're essentially dropped in the middle of the map and told to make your own fun. If you're going into 3/4 after New Vegas looking for story or characters, you won't find much of either.

New Vegas is not like this. If you just leave goodsprings, pick a direction and start walking, prepare to get bored (or die) because you're not playing it properly. The linear path to Vegas is beautifully crafted and you are much better off actually following the story. You can find things to do, but they're almost all tied to the road from Goodsprings to Freeside or attached to a quest. You're honestly better off seeing the big picture, building your character, helping your faction and gaining allies by aiding the tribes.

Both Fallout 3 and New Vegas are well-crafted games with thousands of hours of playability, but they set out to do different things. Treating them the same is likely how this divide started.

EDIT: After 3 or 4 "what about fallout 1 and 2" comments I decided to add this. Fallout 1 and 2 are open-world but each location ties back to the story and affects the world, similar to New Vegas. Yes, we know they're good. They're just not relevant to this particular discussion, really.

TL;DR: Fallout 3 isn't Green New Vegas, New Vegas isn't Orange Fallout 3.

WTF is up with all this random generosity in fallout 76?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 06:55 PM PDT

I've been attacked by nobody, and showered with gifts twice already and I've only been playing for like three days. This isn't how people act online and I was wondering if anyone has any theories on why this community is so kind.

If we get a Fallout game set in the Pacific Northwest, Murder Hornets will be the new Cazadors

Fallout 76 made me fall back in love with the series.

    Posted: 03 May 2020 10:51 AM PDT

Hey everyone, longtime subscriber here of this sub.

So the title pretty much says it all. I'll probably get downvoted into The Pitt for it, but just don't care anymore.

I grew up with Fallout. I own every single Fallout game (except Brotherhood of Steel) and have played all of them multiple times. I know sooooo much about Fallout, to the point where I'm "the guy" people know that loves Fallout in my friends group.

This game means so much to me. The series. The lore. The memories. The characters.

Fallout 76 was an utter disappointment to many of us huge fans. It took what we once loved and threw it in our faces. The launch was and will be forever known as one of the biggest failures in gaming. And I support that title. It was terrible when it came out. It didn't function, it was imbalanced, it was just a god awful game.

But that doesn't take away from what Appalachia has to offer when the game does function (which is a LOT better now.) The story of how Appalachia came to be an automated wasteland is extremely interesting. The land is beautiful. The crafting system...my god it's wonderful. The CAMP mechanic, spectacular. Is it all a bit clunky sometimes? Sure...but no less clunkier than any previous fallout I've played at this point. The games are just buggy, and we all sort of have a tolerance for it at this rate.

But I mean it when I say they improved virtually every aspect of the game while the internet shit on it for two years. I mean, they really do take into account a LOT of problems and DO fix them.

I was very turned off by multiplayer at first. Like...didn't want to have it at all. And then they announce Fallout First for $100 a year? Yeah, I agree, that's STILL a rip off....single player subscription? Haha...yeah, even though I love this game now, that's still wack.

Anyways, at first I was unsure about my favorite franchise now at the mercy of how the online community treats it. Whoa. I went in with an open mind and then after making probably my sixth friend it hit me: this is the Fallout community. We love this game. We never got to play together before this, ever. And it's so much fun. The Fallout 76 community has become one of the least toxic gaming communities I've ever played with. And man, I play some games...there's some communities more toxic than a valley you would find in Appalachia. These people in 76 will come to your house, give you gifts, hook you up. Share loot. Chat. Comment on your camp, all that. Yes, there's assholes out there in every game but...for the most part, everyone I met so far in 76 is genuinely there to have fun. The motivation and incentive is there to work together or alone, it's very nicely done.

Then, Wastelanders. The one gleaming thing we screamed at Bethesda to put in the game, they did, at no charge, rightfully so. These characters are not half assed either, I absolutely adore some of them. The voice acting is perfect for the region (I have family in WV that plays it, and it's as spot on as the Boston accents in 4), and little things like running into random people on the country roads just brings me back.

I understand we all hated on 76 when it came out, but now, ESPECIALLY with the Wastelanders update...it's a Fallout game, people. There's lore, loot, mutants and raiders. It's just soooo good.

Please...think for yourselves people. The internet will forever label Fallout 76 as a bad game, but for those of us with an Intelligence stat high enough to think for ourselves...play it. If you don't like it still, I can't help ya there. But as someone who played this series for years and years, and someone who truly loves the wasteland, this game really did pull through and become something special that made me remember why I fell in love with the franchise to begin with; I fell in love with Fallout because war never changes.

this will probably seem very random but I think Egret Tours Marina is one of the best settlements in Fallout 4

    Posted: 03 May 2020 10:46 PM PDT

For starters it is extremely simple to get: either kill Phyllis or pass a yellow speech check.

it is a very easy to defend location by being surrounded on 3 sides and having two big buildings as walls.

it is very close to the glowing sea (yes i know sommervile place is closer but that place is boring) making it a great place to supply and prepare to go in there

it has a small diner that can work as a bar

you can use the roof of the main building to build on

    water purification is easy

theres a boat you can build in

there are two great spots on both sides of the settlement for farming

and with a few simple and small mods like uso and vanilla extensions, its plain amazing. im building a minutemen fort that will be the main headquarters for the natick and weston area

EDIT: So there is a major con to this settlement i did not know about. there is an enemy spawn point DI-FUCKING-RECTLY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SETTLEMENT! so if you do build there, make sure to have heavily armed guards there or a missile barrage tower near

I wish that Bethesda would add more holotapes that documents humans experiences during the bombs falling and shortly after

    Posted: 04 May 2020 02:06 AM PDT

I've always become enthralled with holotapes with the experiences of humans during the great War and after. What their lives were like during the Sino-American Conflict and what their lives were like now. A good example of what I'm looking for were the survivor stories found in i think Flatwoods. I always looked for these types of holotapes not just in F76 but F4, FNV, and F3. (When I was younger and first started to play F3 I used to call myself a wasteland historian to friends lol. I was 12 or 13 in 2009 and 10 lol) The one that started it all was Candace Kellers holotape found in the Grisly dinner in F3. That one conveyed true terror of the nuclear war. I just wish they'd add disturbing holotapes that conveyed the horror of the war. The human element. In FNV they had some along with terminal entries (The black mountain terminal entries was a good example of this), but in F4 couldn't find a lot of them and F76 only had the survivor stories that were interesting. Wish they'd also tell you more about the nuclear exchange itself. Like how in black mountain you'd find terminal entries of missiles being shot towards the US and bombers scrambling to go retaliate. (If I remember correctly.) Or in F4 at the Switchboard they'd have terminal entries of the US listening post that was there tracking the bombs. That was interesting.

    What do you guys think?

This is my take on why Fallout 4 is actually a really good RPG, AND a good Fallout game.

    Posted: 03 May 2020 03:52 PM PDT

I know I'm going to get downvoted before posting this, because bias exists in the Fallout community more than ever, especially right now. Whatever.

Fallout 4 is a good game in most people's eyes, as it encapsulates the best parts of sandbox RPGs with the best parts of the Fallout series.

"Wait, what? The dialogue mechanics suck, the story's weird, they messed up the lore, blah blah blah"

    Yes. yes they did. HOWEVER:

The dialogue isn't actually all that bad. How many different responses to a yes or no question can you think of? Even in New Vegas, guessing words and blots of ink in Doc Mitchell's house, bartering with Freeside peasants, even the event of conversing with Mr. House had very limited dialogue, and nobody seemed to complain. Even the dialogue in the original Fallout was extremely limited. Ranging from 2-4 dialogue options, this trend is universal in Fallout games, and while dialogue may look better as a simple list of words, they honestly convey the same thoughts and ideas to the story in each game.

Personally, I have never understood the argument that the story in Fallout 4 is limited. You get a perfect amount of backstory on your character, MUCH more convenient than walking into New Vegas without knowing anything about who you are or what you're doing (I always found it funny that there's an entire DLC dedicated to finding out exactly who the courier is). The backstory explains your skill with weaponry, the motivation to continue the story, and when you walk into the wasteland for the first time, it gives you just enough room to play exactly how you want to play it, whether you are an evil mastermind or a kind-hearted soul with nothing but love to give. Where does this freedom of choice stem from, exactly? From the effect of your wife being shot before your eyes and your son taken from you by an unknown assailant. See, you don't actually know if your character has some sort of PTSD or whether they can deal with their own problems. This can influence the choices your character makes later on in the story.

Okay, so that's there, but "you can't play as a bad guy!!!!" What? Says who? Just because there isn't an option to massacre the children of Diamond City doesn't mean Bethesda wants to force you to become an angel. If you study previous Fallout games enough, you can realize that the most evil factions to side with become the Institute and the Brotherhood. The institute's ideals are completely flawed, and it showcases one of the most well crafted motivations to join an evil group in the Fallout series, as your son is part of it. You make the choice of joining or not based on this influence, and you also have the option to gun him down on the spot and escape. What's not evil about that? The brotherhood's ideals are that of a patriot yet they are flawed in their execution, seeking pure power instead of control over the necessary factions. The only good reason to join them is because of their power armor, IMO (which is what I end up doing on every playthrough :P). The storyline explains just how each faction conflicts very well, and there's literally an entire DLC based on becoming a bad guy, that gives you an option on becoming a bad guy or not. Don't be surprised when everybody hates you for joining a bad faction, because that's not "How Bethesda works", that's how LIFE works. It's also great to see the influence of your actions post-game on the world in Fallout 4. The institute flag could fly over Diamond City, Brotherhood patrols could walk the streets, you can have random encounters with free synths and minutemen thanking you for your actions, etc. etc. You didn't have the full info on whether you made the right choice or not in New Vegas and 3, because you didn't have post-game exploration.

The only lore that was messed up in Fallout 4 is probably the lore of jet, which WAS a mistake on their end but did not send the entire series crashing to the ground. Plenty of lore has been fucked around in the series, but the most notable example is the fact that the dynamite in New Vegas does not have the Old World flag on it, but the modern american flag. Also, ghosts (fallout 2). What about Billy the Kid? How did he survive in a fridge for so long? Well, how did Coffin Willie survive underground for ~6 weeks without food or water until being rescued by the Chosen One? Lore is messed up everywhere, which is an admittedly easy thing to do as it is a long-running open world RPG series with a completely different universe from ours, and while it may not excuse the mistakes Bethesda made in development, it is certainly unjust to call a game like fallout 4 "unfinished" or something like that.

So, yeah. Fallout 4's a good game. Or, I should say, because it's all down to opinion, Fallout 4 is not a BAD game. Whatever I just said may be wrong, whatever I just said may be right. Does it really matter? As long as people enjoy it, toxic fanbases of other games *cough* NV *cough* don't have to shove their opinion in others' faces, which they do all the bloody time. I don't care for Fallout 4 haters all too much, but when it gets to the point that this toxic attitude moves people away from even playing the game, it gets on my nerves.

My favorite DLC in any game is Dead Money

    Posted: 03 May 2020 08:09 PM PDT

I know people like to trash on this DLC a lot but it gives the you don't belong here vibe much better than any Fallout area.

Sierra Madre is such a hostile place that you will be begging to return to the irradiated wasteland rather than stay in this hellhole. Isn't that wonderful ?

You are stripped of every gear you have and have to survive by scavenging the shield you created by hoarding everything in the game is gone.

The dead and silent villa with the encroaching poison gas and the ghastly inhabitants make for a atmosphere that is so overbearing that it weighs like a umm..weight on your shoulders.

The whole area is dripping with atmosphere and the enemies this area provides are so uncanny that chills run up my spine everytime I encounter them.

Add that with characters that have an enormous amount of depth even with the limited amount of lines they speak.(Christine)

Add with that the backstory of the villa and Dean Domino you have one of the best stories ever told.

So I just wanted to say Fuck the Holograms that much of the flak this DLC recieves is unwarranted.

Except the holograms they make no fucking sense at all.
