Making a college project about fallout and need people to fill out a questionnaire

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 07:42 AM PDT

I don't ever post, I just tend to lurk however I'm a big fan of the franchise.

For college I was given the option to create something of my choosing and I chose to create a short 20 minute documentary about the Fallout franchise.

Part of my criteria is to create a questionnaire about my documentary.

Was wondering if you anyone could give a minute to fill it out.

TIL that your Pip-Boy Screen color changes your Pip-Boy Light color (Fallout 4)

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 12:49 AM PDT

I was previously using a mod that made my pip-boy's screen 2 different colors, neither of which were what it was set at in Settings, and for the longest time I was confused as to why my Pip-Boy light was red. Well, I disabled my mods so I could get some easy achievements done, and that's when I realized my Pip-Boy's un-modded screen was Red the entire time, so I set to white so the Pip-Boy Light would actually be useful now.

Fallout 4 is really lacking in a final boss.

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 01:35 AM PDT

In previous games, we come face-to-face with tough foes before reaching the end.

    Fallout 1 had The Master.

    Fallout 2 had Frank Horrigan.

    Fallout 3 had Colonel Autumn.

Fallout New Vegas had Legate Lanius and General Lee Oliver (depending what faction you choose to join).

Fallout 76 even has the Scorchbeast Queen.

Fallout 4 doesn't really have much. The closest is Elder Maxon if you side against the Brotherhood of Steel. The Institute had potential for an interesting final boss if one went against them.

I could see a few things how an Institute boss fight could play out. One is Father getting inside the Institute power armor we see in concept art to spend his final moments to keep you from destroying the Institute before he dies. Or maybe the power armor be some sort of synth prototype to guard the reactor that Father had activated. As someone once mention, like some type of Big Daddy from Bioshock.

Another potential boss fight is synth Shaun. Some folks theorize synth Shaun is likely to be a big threat than he appears, a middle finger from Father to you from the grave. What if not saving synth Shaun leads it to show it is something sinister. Like it being a gen 4 prototype able to alter itself to look like it ages by having an extending endoskeleton and flesh that it can control, a mad fusion betweeen machine and flesh (giving FEV experiments more of a point). Not saving synth Shaun causes it to want to survive at any cost so it turns from a kid to some mechanical thing that is taller than you with elongated limbs or whatever. I don't know. Something terrifying that be extremely memorable.

So much more could have been done for the final boss fight in Fallout 4. I would like to experience the same terror I felt when I faced Lanius at his camp in New Vegas.

Please bring back the old dialogue-system.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 08:49 AM PDT

Look, I know many people (including me, until it got annoying very quickly), enjoyed the voiced protagonist, but it basically forced you to listen to the simplistic dialogue that came through Nate/Nora in 4. There's just no getting into the head of your character and being able to use your imagination a bit in all those dialogues. The voiced system just killed off so many things best left silent and up to the player's choice.

Compare one Fallout 4's 'funniest' lines of dialogue to those found in the old games.

Sole Survivor to random Mr. Gutsy: "Go fuck yourself, you crazy robot."

That was OK (but not good enough for a Fallout game), and so were many of the game's other funny lines. But they were spread far and few between all the dull stuff, not to mention that having them voiced just didn't work out all the time.

Sometimes, it sounded as if the voice actor was just trying too hard to be sarcastic or funny (especially when you pick sarcasm when talking to The Mariner about the Red Death. The way the Sole Survivor went on about calling the marines came across as just trying way too hard).

Now compare that to, say, some of these gems from the older games:

Some degenerate, poorly speaking, captured tribal-leader complains about having his people massacred by Joshua Graham.

One of the Courier's possible responses: "Whatever. Joshua, put a cap in General Gobbledigook here."

Silent but effective (and makes use of a perk, Sneering Imperialist). There's just something special about being able to use your own inner voice, as well as not being able to see your player at that moment (first person dialogue view) that makes the scene even more enjoyable. It's also a pleasant surprise when that list of dialogue options comes up, and you cycle through them to check what's given to you (as opposed to the up, down, left, right system of 4: where you often don't even know what's about to come out of the Sole Survivor's mouth ... which so often disappoints anyway).

In New Vegas, the dialogue was of such quality that it could make you want to side with almost any faction, just for the sake of seeing the conversations through. The voiced system made over half of 4's conversations, whether random NPCs, companions, factions, or whatever else, seem so dull.

Even if I turn off the voices in 4, I still see the Sole Survivor and their robotic expressions while speaking.

Imagine, for example, how the SS-Kellogg encounter in Fort Hagen would've gone had they used the old dialogue system. Yes, Laura Bailey (I mostly played as Nora) did a decent job in conveying Nora's rage there (it was reminiscent of how she voiced Jack in Mass Effect), but having more dialogue options and keeping things in first-person and silent would've just been better.

So many opportunities to slot in all manner of dialogue choices against Kellogg, ranging from snark to sarcasm to pure, manic rage ... What a wasted opportunity.

This is one of the voiced interactions between the two of them:

Kellogg: "But I think we've been talking long enough. We both know how this has to end. So... you ready?"

Player: "You know I am, Kellogg." (OK, I think this is the player's automatic response when the conversation ends, and combat starts, so it's not strictly a dialogue choice per se. Still, same difference in Fallout 4).

With the old system, I'm pretty sure one of the choices would've been something like: "Yeah, I'm ready to shove that gun up your ass." or something.

It's the impact of just seeing that as being one of the dialogue choices that makes it hilarious, and more effective in the end.

Imagine having a voiced Courier telling Vulpes Inculta (with the Terrifying Presence perk): "I'm going to wear your head like you wear that dog's."

Nothing beats imagining it in your own, unique way without actually seeing (or hearing) the player-character's model. And that sort of imagination is one of the things which made Fallout great in the first place. Remember how we could aggro that one Enclave sergeant (forgot his rank, actually) way back in Fallout 2? Lol.

I can't explain it as good as I'd like, but what I'm trying to say is that some things are best left to the player themselves, which the old system did by being silent and in first-person view (not to mention that I preferred having the person look at me, the player, while speaking).

Imagine, for example, if New Vegas had a voiced protagonist. How would that encounter with the mourning NCR Trooper at Boulder City go? Telling him that his dead brother was a bitch and so was he (the trooper) just wouldn't come off as good with a voice, and it would totally depend on the voice actor themselves.

But when it came to us fans using our own inner voice? Priceless.

It would also be cheaper on the budget and allow for better mod implementation if they went back to and stuck with the old dialogue system again.

Fallout deserves better than a game that did so many things right (yes, 4 brought a lot of good things to the table) but at the cost of killing off one of the best parts of the franchise: dialogue. And don't even get me started on the downsides of having all those conversations be in real-time ...

Please, Bethesda, if you ever make another single-player Fallout again, please revert back to the old dialogue-system — and have it freeze the rest of the game during conversation. Oh, and bring back the low-intelligence dialogues, as well as the skill checks (and the entire skill system itself) too.

Wouldn't it be better to implement a time-tested method of delivering Fallout dialogue rather than forcing through the more costly, bug-laden, simplistic version that 4 gave us?

    One last example:

The Courier failing an explosives-check when speaking to Decanus Severus regarding the NCR's landmines

"The trick, I figure, is to pick up the mine really, really carefully."

Severus: "Go find a minefield and practice that 'trick' several times, then. Idiot."

I don't think any voice actor can do that line justice for the player, really. It's best left silent for maximum effect (you can headcanon your character either being a f###ing idiot or deliberately trying to sabotage the Legion when giving that 'advice').

Sorry if anyone gets peeved off by my anti-voiced-protagonist stance, but Fallout was built on quirk, dark humour, roleplaying, etc. to set the tone of its world and characters. Without that, and by pushing through an overly 'emotional' story the way 4 tried, it just falls apart.

Emotional moments can be done well without the player-character having a voice. It just takes some real skill to write.

Maybe what I'm trying to say is: don't hold our hand by simplifying our dialogues and dumbing down their potential quality [Yes, No (yes), Sarcasm (still yes), What? (Pointless waste of time)]. Rather have us players use our imagination in a wide variety of options best kept silent.

So what's the Deal with the South Strip?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 09:39 PM PDT

Due to recent events, I've had a bit more free time and started a new playthrough of both Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Upon reaching the strip, I'm once again struck by a question I've had since the first time I played the game:

What is the deal with the south end of the Strip?

I mean, you go from high-rise, giant casinos, to a literal factory, what looks like an office building, and the entrance to Vault 21. Vault 21 looks like the building was originally an entrance to a motel or something, so I'm able to handwave that, but the NCR embassy is just two generic office buildings, and Michelangelo's is a literal factory. Furthermore, the south west corner of the strip is walled off, but has nothing in it.

And it's not like it's slowly transitioning over to office buildings and industry, since most of that is west of I-15. It's just there. And the you have a motel and McCarran Airport on the other side.

Any insight/personal theories on this? I know that Vegas went through a number of redesigns during development, but the buildings are just odd.

Fallout 3 PC Crash help... If somebody could give me a few tips it would mean the world.

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 02:24 AM PDT

So I bought GOTY from GOG (really wish I went with steam im new to pc gaming). I'm on a Surface Pro 7 (intel i5) and by no means is it meant for gaming but I've seen other people run Fallout 3 on it. I've already tried FOSE. Updating the launchers to windows 10 compatibility.

Whenever I get to select a new game it loads a quarter of the way then freezes.

Any suggestions would be a life saver. Really trying to sidetrack myself during quarantine.

Who would win: Big Mountain or the Institute?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 03:38 PM PDT

Both have some advance technology at their disposal. Who do you think would win in a fight?

Big MT have lobotomites, roboscorpions, night stalkers, and cazadors.

Institute have their various synths, and super mutants.

    Both shown teleportation capabilities.

Who would be likely to emerge victorious? I bet Big MT since their technological scope seems bigger than the Institute. MT worked on special guns and stealth technology.

[FO4] Does disabling junk (leaf piles, debris, dead bushes...) via console breaks anything?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 12:04 AM PDT

I want to 'disable' some of the junk around Sanctuary, but I'm afraid I might break things or destroy the game's performance/my save.

I'm mostly concerned about the precombines. Does the disable command break them or just make the object invisible?

I did read about precombines and, while some people say that only mods can break them, others say that disabling environment items will also affect them:

Quote from Boston FPS Fix's author:

"I would also like to make clear that using the console command to disable objects will have better results in many cases; BUT this too WILL break precombines and cause VIS issues; Do not let anyone try to tell you otherwise. [...] If anyone finds evidence to the contrary, please let me know in the comments."

    So I don't know anymore... :/

Edit: I've just been reading more about this stuff and it seems that there's no way to remove the clutter/junk without messing up the precombines, so yeah... RIP my plans of a clean settlement.

Hello! So I’m a bit late to the party, but I just started playing my first fallout game, fallout 4!

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 07:22 PM PDT

I'm a little shell shocked. The world is so massive and it doesn't give you a ton of direction and games like that are a little more difficult to get invested in. I had the same issue the first time i played Skyrim. I played it for 2 hours, put it down and didn't play it again for almost 9 months. When i picked it back up, i realized I loved it! Hoping for a similar experience with fallout! Do ya'll have any tips to help me kind of get a feel for the game?

    Vault-Tec Representative post Fallout

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 10:37 PM PDT

I was roaming around Goodneighbour one night and ran into the Vault-Tec guy from the beginning of the game.

Only this time, instead of selling me on joining Vault 111, he was a ghoul who was outraged that he had been denied entry to 111 after 20 years of service to the company. He lamented on how lonely the last 200 years had been for him, so I took pity and sent him to Sanctuary where he'll have a cushy job as a store manager for me.

During his dialogue, there was one thing he said that interested me. He admitted that I was the second person he ran into that he knew from Before.

    Who is this other person?

It couldn't have been Nate because he was killed and Rep guy didn't know (baby) Shaun. Maybe he got to know Father? I know that the Cabots have been around for a while so maybe it was them? Or is this some reference to another Fallout game that I'm not understanding?

Has anyone else come across him and does he eventually tell who the other person is or have an idea of who it may be?

How do I trigger the minutemen main quest?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 04:19 AM PDT

Hey guys, I am trying to finish Fallout 4 with the minutemen ending. I watched a video of "can you beat fallout 4 without a pip-boy?" so I know I had to do some of the endless quests. However, I have been grinding them out for the past 2 days and there is no prompt to invade the institute or anything.

I am friendly with all factions, and I am fairly certain I have completed every BOS quest except "blind betrayal" which I am in the middle of. I have done a bunch of railroad quests, and the only institute quest I have done is to capture the rogue synth at Libertalia.

    Far Harbour Invisible Models Help?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 04:15 AM PDT

I am currently playing on Xbox one with some mods installed (none of which I believe influence building models or textures) and I am playing the far harbour for the first time. Upon arriving in far harbour the models for many of the buildings in town popped out of existence and have not re-appeared and the game crashes when I stand upon the wall to defend the town . Any advice on how to fix this glitch ? This has not occurred at all in the commonwealth. This is quite annoying as I was looking forward to playing far harbour for the first time. Also, I can not uninstall all my mods without severely corrupting the save.

    A critique of New Vegas

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 03:14 AM PDT

I'll start off by saying fallout new vegas was my first fallout game and at one point was my favourite game of all time, I am also not going to talk about the gameplay itself too much and try to focus on the story, your actions, and the consequences, also this is about the base game only and not the dlcs, also am on mobile so sorry for the god awful formatting

Now fallout new vegas is loved by most of the fallout community, me included, however it is not the best fallout game, either story wise or gameplay wise, obviously fallout 4 is much better gameplay wise. Other than that it is much better than fallout 4, the gameplay of new vegas isn't what I want to focus on, I mainly want to focus on the story, choices, and consequences.

Obviously everyone here knows the story of new vegas, you get shot, you wake up, and track down the man who killed you. Then you are given a choice join 4 factions, Caesars legion, NCR, Mr. House, and Yesman. Now people love to shit on fo4 for having 3 factions that are basically the same ending (and rightfully so) but NV also has 3 factions with very similar endings and even missions, all factions require you to either help or destroy the boomers, the BoS, and 3 require you to help or destroy the khans, these are already more similar missions than fo4, but 2 factions are literally exactly the same, those factions being House and Yesman, literally the same missions. And people act like New Vegas really offers you more choices than any other fallout game.

Do any of you remember the classic fallout games? The ones that actually offered you choices? Sure fo2 didn't have multiple endings, but despite that, you had more choices in that game than New vegas, and guess what, almost all of your actions had consequences that were more than just one faction being mad at you, you could become a slaver and some very good companions would no longer be available however it was a very good way to make money early game, you vould kill the slavers and free the slaves but you no longer had the option to get easy money quickly, you could free vic and he will tell you the location of vault city, or you could keep him locked up and find it yourself, you could join one of the crime families in new reno, but if you do the other crime families will attack you if you enter their casino, and will not allow you to help them, I could go on and on but that would be pointless.

The main story of fallout 2 completely blows new vegas out of the water, you are the chosen one a descendent of the vault dweller a man that once saved the entire wasteland from one of the biggest threats its ever seen, you're village is dying and you are its only hope for its survival, you are told to find the GECK that your tribe believes is some holy artifact that will save the village, when in reality it is just an advanced piece of technology used to make farming easier, you actually had a somewhat realistc motivation, you were trying to save your village and once you get finally get the GECK you return to your village to find it destroyed and your people either kidnapped or killed by the enclave, you then try and find the men responsible for killing and kidnapping your friends and family and destroy them before they try and start a genocide against "undesirables", you infiltrate their base kill the president and overcharge the oil rigs reactor, free your people, and fight the most powerfull character in the entire fallout universe I mean frank horrigan literally ripped a deathclaw in half, with his hands, with his fucking bare hands like holy shit, that mother fucker could fucking cough on legate lanius and lanius would just explode.

In New vegas the story is no where near as interesting, and the main characters motivation is not even slightly realistic, I mean seriously some mailman gets shot in the head and by some miracle isn't braindead, and decides to track him down across the mojave to get back the package that he is supposed to deliver? And I know your argument is probably gonna be like "well he needed to deliver the package, otherwise the mojave express or Mr. House would send mercs/securitrons to kill the mailman and take back the package" (and no im not making this up, this is an actual argument I have seen used before.) you seriously want me to believe that the mojave express is really in any position to, well do literally anything, or that Mr. House is gonna bother with some mailman, I mean Mr. House knows that benny took the chip why the fuck doesnt he just send robots to take back the god damn chip. It makes no sense whatsoever.

Now I will say that I am not a fallout classic fanboy that thinks the classics are perfect and have nothing wrong with them whatsoever, they do have problems, they are buggy as hell, almost as buggy as fo3, and the gameplay is absolutely terrible, however the story of the classics, specifically fo2 are masterpieces, however that doesn't mean they are perfect, I personally wish that fo2 would have had an ending where you could join or help the enclave or some shit. Anyways I finished writing this at 6:14 AM so uhh please forgive any grammar mistakes and just ignore shit that makes 0 sense, because well thats probably just a mistake that I made when I was too fucking tired.

Is fallout 4 far harbor dlc inspired by H.P. Lovecraft...?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 02:12 AM PDT

If you ask me I would say the far harbor dlc is one of the greatest dlcs in the gaming history especially in the fallout series. It is a really fun detective adventure that has some cool and mysterious cases that is really enjoyable especially in that foggy silent hill like location...It adds some cool creatures to the game and it mainly focuses to detective stuff and mysterious deaths...you know. I just want to know does this dlc creeps you out as much as it creeps me out and does it reminds you of H.P. Lovecraft stuff like Cthulhu and deep waters...?

Do you think vault 111 had the right idea with the cryo-chambers

They avoided covid-19 so it's probably a good idea to recreate it when the next plague comes out

PS4 Glitch in Fallout 4 PLEASE HELP

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 06:17 PM PDT

OK, so I'm on PS4 version of Fallout 4 and the quest called "Defend the Castle" is glitched. This is the quest after destroying the Institute and after defending the Castle from the Brotherhood of Steel. Once you complete the main quests, you will hear on Radio Freedom that scouts have been looking at the castle. This quest can have many different factions, and I got the Brotherhood. I made it to 80% of the quest. Am I screwed? What should I do?
