I keep seeing complaints like this, about how there is still so much loot left in places that have supposedly been scavenged before or that should have been.

Pre-war ruins are dangerous, and places with the really good loot are all filled with deadly creatures or traps.

We are immortal beings in this game, when we get killed we just reload a save and either come back when we have leveled up a bit or go in knowing exactly what dangers to expect or how to avoid them.

Normal people in the Fallout universe don't have that luxury- going into a pre-war ruin in search of that overpowered plasma rifle or a lifetime supply of stimpacks is a good way to get yourself disintegrated and lost forever.

    Bethesda Didn't Ruin Fallout

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 04:11 PM PDT

Many people like to claim that Bethesda has ruined Fallout, mainly by saying that Bethesda changes the lore established in the series. As someone who's played Fallout from the first game to the latest and as someone who cares deeply for lore, I'm going to explain why I think otherwise and where lore has changed and clearing up misconceptions.

The Brotherhood of Steel (Fallout 3)

Ever since Fallout 3 people said that Bethesda changed (or ruined) the Brotherhood. While it is true that Lyons' splinter group is changed from the Brotherhood we see in 1 and 2 - that doesn't mean it's ruined nor is it bad.

The Brotherhood of Steel are a faction formed by humans and full of humans, as such these people will have their own interpretations of the Codex. Owyn Lyons was well respected and followed the Brotherhood's original mission until he came across the Capital Wasteland. Coming from The Pitt, Lyons had PTSD and couldn't stand to see the people of the Capital Wasteland suffering. He came to the revolution that to help humanity - he must help them directly. In his dialogue, if the Lone Wanderer says "I thought the protection of humanity was a part of the Brotherhood's oaths." then Lyons will respond with "Only in a very broad sense. The Brotherhood's oaths are to protect humanity's progress, but not necessarily every human. The Outcasts - and members of the Brotherhood in other places - consider it a waste to protect most people."

This makes it rather clear that Lyons has had a change of philosophy, a change in heart and of the mission of the Brotherhood. Using his own interpretation of the Codex, he splintered off from the Brotherhood of Steel, which created a rift and civil strife which these people call themselves "Brotherhood Outcast". This is a realistic change in the Brotherhood, which doesn't actually conflict with any lore. Lyons admits that he's strayed from the original mission, the Brotherhood Outcast exist and state their own purpose which fits more in line with that of Fallout 1 and 2's Brotherhood, not to mention that Lyons is a different Elder, with differing views.

The second thing that people seem to dislike about Fallout 3's Brotherhood is that they're "morally good". While Lyons may have good intentions, by all technicality so does the original Brotherhood of Steel - in the broad sense. Lyons' ideals may also be that of charity, but that doesn't make every member of the Brotherhood good. We know that those in the Mall fire at the ghouls at Underworld, showing bigotry.

The Brotherhood of Steel (Fallout 4)

Then we have the Brotherhood of Steel from Fallout 4, which granted many seemed to have liked but at the cost of many also saying that they're "the Enclave lite". I again have to disagree with this statement.

The Brotherhood have always had a negative view towards mutants, we can use Marcus as the example here. Marcus in Fallout 2 makes note of Jacob when he refers to him, specifically this part "That was Jacob, from the Brotherhood of Steel. He'd sworn some oath to destroy muties." A member of the Brotherhood of Steel swore an oath to destroy mutants, attacking Marcus for no other reason other than him being a super mutant. This is in line with what we see in Fallout 4, as under Arthur Maxson he has led a crusade against super mutants, ghouls, and the newfound life - synths. While Maxson makes it clear that he's against these "abominations" as a whole, even if they are docile, he doesn't actively go out seeking to destroy Goodneighbor or The Slog.

Further, the Enclave's goals were to clean the earth (though more specifically America) of mutants and repopulate. This isn't Maxson's goal, not even the slightest. He's on the mission to prevent what is in his eyes the second coming of Armageddon. Again, he doesn't go out of his way to kill The Slog or Goodneighbor, in fact he's a lot more openly hostile towards synths, which his crusade is all about. We know this, because you can inform the Brotherhood about the settlement of Acadia in Far Harbor before even learning of DiMA's secret and he'll send a force to wipe them off the map.

While Arthur's chapter may be more hostile/blunt, let's look at the man closely. Arthur was raised half his life in the hell that was the Capital Wasteland. Full of super mutants, feral ghouls, raiders, and more. Seeing his friends die left and right to these mutants and raiders, even his former role model and love interest Sarah Lyons dying, lead the guy to become bitter. He's a 20-something year old who's an alcoholic and is the leader of the Brotherhood of Steel that is left mostly alone by the High Elders on the other side of the country which are supposedly still under war with the NCR. Not only that, but he's the last Maxson, a blood member of the Maxson tree which founded the Brotherhood of Steel in the first place. And lastly, due to his young age he is a lot more radical, more emotional - if anything with age he'd become more retrospective, thoughtful. He took what he learned of Lyons' teachings and molded it into his own ideals, he isn't the Brotherhood proper though he is close to that.

The Brotherhood of Steel (Fallout 76)

And lastly, the Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout 76 are criticized for "not making sense". The thing is, we know nothing about the Brotherhood of Steel from 2077 to 2161. So not much can actually change here. And we have a line from Caesar which says that one of the Brotherhood members they captured didn't even know of their own founded, Roger Maxson.

Roger Maxson never had any actual character. He was just a mythical figure with very little history. So again, not much can change here. Giving him character was actually a good idea and done well. The history that we're told also tell us more about the foundation of the Brotherhood of Steel, the creation of its ideals, rankings, etc.

Not much can change when there's nothing to change.

    Super Mutants

The next thing that people complain about Bethesda's Fallouts are super mutants. I don't really know where this logic came from, but people seem to think super mutants are this super intelligent species and Bethesda just made them "dumb orks". Well I hate to say it, but they've always been "dumb orks".

In Fallout 1, we're met with super mutants. In random encounters west of Vault 13 and around the area, we can stumble across a super mutant party. This party will, whether you're wearing a vault suit or not, kill you instantly. The story makes it clear that The Master is looking for humans, specifically Vault dwellers, but these super mutants will attack you on sight. This hostility is something that many think isn't there in the original games, but it clearly is.

Then, onto their intellect, we have the floater text. Almost every super mutant's floater (and dialogue) text is broken English and rather simplistic. Dumb, some would say. We also have Harry, a super mutant aware of The Master's goal to get Vault dwellers but you can convince him that you are a ghoul, even though you are clearly a perfectly looking human and wearing a vault suit.

We also know that the lore for the FEV (and thus super mutants) is that on average it lowers one's intellect especially on irradiated subjects which is the whole reason The Master was looking for Vaults.

Move on to Fallout 2, the majority of notable super mutants aren't all dumb, but not all that smart either. But this is for one main reason, most super mutants were wiped/kicked out, leaving behind only those smart enough to not attack and instead adjust to the coming world. Even Frank Horrigan, despite his SPECIAL, is a moron in lore.

Then we go to Fallout 3, the super mutants here aren't any different and, ironically, are the result of if Fallout 1 had The Master win. The super mutants we meet are 9/10 irradiated subjects transformed into super mutants, as the super mutants are doing the dumping themselves and aren't aware that they need to find non-irradiated people.

Moving to Fallout 4, ironically enough Fallout 4's (and 76's) super mutants are probably the smartest on average, capable of forming more cohesive sentences, laying out traps (such as Fist), creating tribes, laying out cohesive orders for scouting parties, etc. These super mutants were also made from the result of irradiated humans due to the Institute snatching them from the surface, but using tweaked FEV which we can tell with Swan and his journal pages.

And in Fallout 76, they're probably even smarter than Fallout 4's super mutants on average, though relatively are still lacking in intelligence. They have more advanced (yet crude) armor than those in 3 or 4, have better tactics as they usually travel in packs, etc.

Overall, nothing's changed, FEV causes a loss in intellect on average, something that even The Master nor Institute could change after all their tweaks. Due to most super mutants also ending up being former irradiated humans, this results in them often being low in intelligence on average rather than smart.

    Miscellaneous Lore

Onto other small tidbits, I'm going to list a few misconceptions and clear them up rather briefly:

    1. Jet
      1. Jet's origin is fuzzy, as we don't know the actual creator. It isn't Myron, however, as Mrs. Bishop was addicted to jet before Myron could have made it, Myron's own dialogue implies he didn't make it and with a high enough Intelligence, the Chosen One can call Myron out. To further this, New Vegas puts jet behind a locked door in Old World Blues as a static object (meaning it isn't randomized).
    2. Ghoul Needs
      1. Ghouls are a mixed bag, as some apparently need to eat and drink and breathe, while others don't. For some reason people seem to think that Fallout 4 is the only game to include a ghoul that doesn't need to eat, drink, or breathe - but there's Coffin Willie in Fallout 2, whom states that he's been buried alive for months.
      2. Some people also say that ghouls never ran/shouldn't run, but this is another thing that Fallout 2 changed/added, as there are ghoul scavengers that will run.
      3. Then, this one's a bit more odd and somewhat less mentioned, though it is still a thing. Much like super mutants, people seem to think Bethesda makes ghouls "zombies" - Fallout 1 literally has a gang ran by ghouls named "Zombies". Necropolis means "city of the dead", there's references to eating people and eating brains in both Fallout 1 and 2.

I am thankful to Fallout 3 for introducing the radio

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 02:53 PM PDT

I think that the old-school music via radio in Fallout 3 has done the franchise wonders, and I think it has done well to cement its retro-futuristic theme, as well as set it apart from other games.

Some people have pointed out that it is too jolly, but really, I think that is the point. It juxtaposes against the harsh brutality of the wasteland, and makes it more sinister than it would be otherwise.

I agree with Fallout 3s choice of music in particular, Billie Holiday especially, was a perfect choice.

We were saved by the apocalypse.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 05:38 PM PDT

We know that the zetans have been studying us... for forever. But... it seems that when we got fusion tech, they got reallllyyyy curious real quick. They went so far as to quite obviously abduct astronauts and start shooting down military satellites before the great war occurred. They sent scouts (some got captured). They were most likely planning an invasion. One that would dwarf anything seen in fo3. However, something threw a wrench in their plans. We destroyed ourselves and our very comfortable planet. That's why they never invaded. It clearly wasn't just the planet (they have been around for a looong time) it was also us that interested them. The reason they have started to poke their noses in our business again has been the fact that we have really started to rebuild. Ironically, this is why Mr. house is a bad choice. The zetans exist, and would blast the hell out of any ship he sends out to colonize, making all of his advancements moot. This might be why the enclave never went into space to colonize other planets using vault tech data. They were afraid, and with good reason. The planet should be protected (for a little bit) due to the lone wanderer securing Mothership zeta, but we have seen in fo4 that they are still around. In any case, society should be careful in it's development, and might be the reason that proper nation-states with a large organized military are necessary. The world will fully recover soon enough, so that alone might bring them, so staying backwards won't help us. They are coming.

What reason would the Sole Survivor have for wearing the Vault 111 Jumpsuit?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 08:46 PM PDT

Aside from statistical reasons, why would they continue wearing the Jumpsuit when it could personally signify death and loss to them? Perhaps an attachment to what came from before? I'm not sure.

A lot of people complain about Bethesda putting the Brotherhood of Steel in every game, But it kinda makes sense lore-wise

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 01:54 PM PDT

The BoS is not a faction like the NCR or Caesar's legion, They don't want to settle down and build a civilization, Their goal is to capture and study all the technology in post-war America.

So wouldn't it make sense for them to establish presence in all the major locations in the wasteland as to cover more ground?

And they do. They have chapters in multiple places: The west coast, The mid-west, The DC chapter, East coast chapter, They probably have a chapter in the middle south, And that's just the ones we know about. They do it to look for tech in every nook and cranny of the US.

So yeah, I never understood why people think it doesn't make sense for them to be everywhere, Wouldn't that be what the BoS want?

Semi-Psa for the sale on Fallout games on steam for those who are interested.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 07:19 PM PDT

Fallout 1, 2, and Tatics can be purchased in a bundles that does save you some money, would recommend this if you want these games.

Fallout 3, doesn't work without fixing that you will have to do. Either follow a guide to patch or download Tale of Two wastelands with FNV to link them. Or buy on GoG since I heard it works there.

Fallout NV can be a buggy mess. Purchase the ultimate edition and follow Viva New Vegas to mod it for stability at the minimum.

Fallout 76, buy the base game. Steel Dawn deluxe is purely cosmetic items includes that allow you to build a camp/player base that is more Brotherhood of Steel themed. The "battlepass" is free with a few bonus items that require Fallout 1st. 1st, a subscription service, gives you atoms for the atomic shop, a private world where only you and friends can play, a "Ncr Ranger" outfit, and a scrapbox that holds infinite junk. All dlc and updates that add story and quests are free so far and will be downloaded with said base game.

Just felt like saying these, have a nice day in the wastelands wherever you are, or heck go explore some new ones.

Why is playing Fallout like a sociopath so popular

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 08:18 AM PDT

I personally play the game in a kill everything way followed by mass amounts of drug abuse and a complementary cannibal perk for the lols. But i ve also noticed that playing this way has become some sort of meta in the community lately mostly with Fallout meme YouTubers. My question is does anybody play like this? Or better yet is there anyone who doesn't play like this after their like 4th play through especially for fallout 3 and new vegas?

How do FO3 and FNV hold gameplay-wise ?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 03:56 AM PDT

Both are on sale on GOG and I'm looking for some Elder Scrolls-like RPG (so, "first person looting murderhobo simulator").

I've already played Skyrim/Oblivion/Morrowind/TESO/FO4 (and a few non-Bethesda similar games) so I guess FO3 and FNV are the logical next step, but I've seen someone calling those two "Oblivion but with guns" and I'm not really fond of the extremely rigid Oblivion leveling where you're fucked if you didn't plan your character from day 1. Enemies being massive damage sponges at higher levels, constantly having to fiddle with the difficulty slider to keep things reasonable, being extremely careful to not level up too quickly or too slowly, etc.

Do FO3 and FNV suffer from the same problems ?

    Fallout 5 story idea

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 03:37 PM PDT

You awake in a vault, which similar to 101 was never designed to be opened. Unlike 101 however, the residents were never told about the outside world, or any of the history - they think the vault life is all there is. One day however, a group of soliders in a previously unseen type of power armour invade, capturing and killing many members of the vault. You get dragged outside and put on a vertibird. Whilst being flown away a man asks you about yourself, getting to know you seeming strangely friendly. It is here you pick your special stats and what not. After all the questions are completed, he tells you not to worry - The Boss will look after you. But at that moment, another soldier onboard shoots him in the head and apologising and saying 'This is your only chance' before grabbing you and throwing you out of the Vertibird into a river in a valley. You look up to see the Vertibird start to lose control (as the traitor and the pilot start fighting) and crash on a part of the valley which is hard to reach.

You start to pass out, but not before you hear someone call out. Fade to black. You wake up in a small fishing village, a local fisherman who has a small boat rescued you. The protagonist starts the game from complete ignorance not knowing about the war or anything (completely the opposite of FO4), the village is having problems which you can help them with, but you have the option of either trying to find the crash Vertibird, trying to find your way back to the Vault, or finding out about the people who took you. The fisherman also tells you about 'The Sky Tower' - a sky scraper, where anyone who is someone lives.

The Sky Tower is the largest settlement in the game, but not easy to access. The entire city is in the sky scraper, but to get there is treacherous, a wall surrounds it with guards who don't just let anyone in. Even once who make it past the wall, you're in the 'Out Town' full of people who are on the waiting list to become a Sky Tower citizen. Some people want to invade the tower while others want a more diplomatic solution. Eventually you gain access to the tower - it is a free market utopia, with the current CEO of the tower having a monopoly on security and property (he owns all the rooms and floors, and can evict anyone at any time). The tower also homes vertical farms, and they are trying to grow enough food for all the surrounding area.

The CEO doesn't know of the group who invaded your vault, in fact he's never even heard of the vaults before, but wanders if the group invaded to steal pre war tech to sell it and make money, he then starts thinking of doing that himself and asks if you would like to help him as you clearly have knowledge about vaults. He also tells you about a settlement called 'Rigamortis' and that is his primary concern right now. A city full of ghouls and other mutants who plan on starting a war with humanity. The leader has been rallying mutants and ghouls across the wasteland claiming that they have been unfairly treated yet they are the superior species and it is the time for ghouls to rise and take over. He cautions you not to go there and as a precaution has banned all mutants/ghouls from Sky Tower and the Out Town in case they are moles, but this is only making matters worse.

Rigamortis is in a highly irradiated area protected by lots of feral ghouls. If you do manage to make your way in, you'll be arrested (or the whole settlement will be hostile it you resist). You meet a 2 ghoul scientists who argue what to do with you, one wants to set you free and ask if you want to be ghoulified, the other wants to test 'Chemical F' on you. Luckily the first scientist wins. If you chose to become a ghoul, you'll recover HP in radiation but you have a massive drop in charisma and you'll be treated differently by different people. The people of Rigamortis will immediately accept you and let you in on their plans, while you won't be allowed back into Sky Tower. If you prove yourself loyal to Rigamortis, you will meet the leader who tells you that they have made a drug which can reverse the neurodegeneration of ghouls which causes them to be feral - and he is one such ghoul (however it is implied that the ghouls who come back from being Feral are sociopathic, hence why this guy hates humans so much). He also explains if you are a ghoul, that they have altered the drug which they named Chemical F, which can cause neurodegeneration in humans, essentially making feral humans and has plans to release it in a gas form across the wasteland. Not everyone knows about this however, and those which do like scientist A want his dictatorship to end and don't want to start a war with humans. He reasons, humans that are immune to the drug will have to deal with infighting against the feral humans that that will be their (the ghouls) chance to invade. You can either chose to help this plan, and let ghouls take over the wasteland, kill all the ghouls, convince him to just commit war the good old fashioned way (not with biological weapons) or get him kicked out of power for a more diplomatic leader.

You eventually find out about the group which invaded the vault. They call themselves, The ARK and up until recent have kept to themselves. You track them down to their secret base - although you are treated with hostility at first, a senior officer tells his soldiers to put their weapons down and that they've been expected the player. You are taken to a room where a TV monitor pops up, the monitor speaks to you welcoming you, saying he is the leader of ARK and that he meant you and your people no harm. He then gives you a tour - the TV monitors are on many of the walls and so the screen and his voice jumps from monitor to monitor while on the tour. In the main chamber, it looks like a prewar town with lots of people wearing prewar clothes lived. He explained that Vault Tec are an evil company who experimented on people in their vaults, and one of his missions is to rescue the people from the vaults, and to rehouse them hear - designing it prewar as it was a 'better time.' He explains that the reason there are so many trees and what not is because he has acquired a lot of vault tech, including GECKS - he has found vaults who's water chips were programmed to break and if it wasn't for him, all the residents of said vault would probably be dead. In the main chamber, you meet some members of your vault who tell you they love living their and hate how their overseer never told them about any of this. Upon digging however who find out the ARC leader's main goal is to take over the wasteland including Sky Tower, and grow the ARK into his pre war utopia. Those living on the inside being his humble citizens, forced to live and old fashioned way with no weapons, drugs, robots, mutants/ghouls, or become integrated with his army of soliders in power armour he created, to kill any undesirables or those refusing to submit.

You also find out more about the solider which kicked you out of the Vertibird. She was from another vault, and was captured and made to join the ARK, having watched her friends and family murdered in front of her as they didn't submit when they broke into their vault. She explains that previous vault residents get VIP prewar privileges in the ARK compared to integrated raiders and settlements, but she knew it was wrong and so joined the soldiers, with the plan to help end the glorified slavery/imprisonment of future vault dwellers. So you have a few options of dealing with ARK - join them, and take over Sky Tower by force or manipulation and kill of Rigamortis, or help the rebels take over ARK and kill the leader (who turns out to be a prewar rich dude, who uploaded his consciousness into the ARK mainframe, and owned his own militia and developed his own power armour), kill everyone in ARK by setting off a nuke in the prewar town chamber (war never changes) or unleash chemical F to turn them all insane and let Rigamortis take over the ARK.

Am I the only one who loves the enthusiasm of Dr.Zimmer in Fallout 3 when he talks about the Institute and the Synths? None of the other Institute Scientists seem to be that happy about their work.

Even their negative aspects are more clear, how he hated the surface-world, how he didnt see Synths as people, even the Railroad is teased in Fallout 3. This stuff is always funny to mention to the fans who think the Institute is "unrealistic" while stan-ing Fallout 3, they were there. Sorry.

but yeah I wish the rest of the Institute carried this energy. Hell, we should have gotten a random quest were Zimmer comes back with the Coursor he was after.

My headcanon about the Ranger Sequoia.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 09:36 PM PDT

The Ranger Sequoia was designed by both the NCR and Gun Runners, with the latter manufacturing them. These are more seen as an Award than a firearm and some Rangers prefer to lock them away as opposed to using them as Weapons. Since they're manufactured by the Gun Runners, there exists an improved Gun Runners Sequoia, but these are given to very high level Gun Runners or Retirees. The Ranger Sequoia comes in a Dark Oak Wooden Box with plush padding inside covered in silk with a Certificate of Authenticity. These guns aren't sold officially and most NCR Merchants refuse to buy or sell such an item, but there are a few who knows a guy who knows a guy that's into hot items and can cut you a deal. The 3 easiest ways to obtain one is

    1. Loot one off a NCR Ranger Veteran Corpse
    2. Dedicate 20 years to serving the NCR Rangers
    3. Have one handed down to you from a relative who's a Ranger Vet

It's considered a serious crime in the NCR to steal one and if one (assuming the Ranger who it belonged to doesn't find you first) is found, it should be turned in so it can be returned to who it belonged to.

Most of the fallouts are on sale on steam right now 76, 3, 2, and 1 for what I know are all on sale currently, I don't know if anyone else has said this, but get em' while there hot!

Edit: saw another post apparently 4 is on sale too!

Edit 2: you can get 1, 2, and BOS in a bundle which is 75 or so percent off.

    Have everyone experienced this?
One day, after I played Fallout 4 as usual and save the game, I went to bed. I closed my eyes then some voice came up: "Mason(my main character name), we need your help,we are being attacked". Some picture show up in my head. In front of me were Preston and Piper, I looked around and realized that It's Santuary.
