As someone who massively prefers New Vegas by a large margin, Fallout 3 really does a great job at letting you be an asshole, more than people give it credit for

In New Vegas, you can join possibly the most evil faction in the series, Caesars Legion. They rape, pillage, crucify, enslave, and mutilate people. You can do evil things and the world reacts accordingly.

However, most NPCs you meet, you treat nicely or at most, bluntly. From memory, there's not a whole lot of times where you can just be a dick for no reason.

In Fallout 3, you get a lot of chances to be mean for no reason. Admittedly doesn't really change much most of the time, but it actually makes me feel bad when I choose those options, even when trying to play an evil character. Some examples I can think of in the first few hours I've played.

    • Basically being a brat at your birthday party
    • insulting Amata to help Butch
    • Telling off Amata when she's trying to help you escape
    • Insulting Sheriff Simms and Megaton (pfft Nice hat, calamity Jane)

    • Talking with gob

    • Crushing moira's dreams

Like I said, this doesn't really change the experience a whole lot but does make you really feel pretty mean spirited.

Honestly I think I like all Fallout games equally.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 11:32 PM PDT

Fallout 1 was such a fun experience for someone not used to isometric games.

Fallout 2 was hilarious and had a lot of depth.

Fallout 3 was my first Fallout game and had an immersive world and atmosphere.

Fallout New Vegas had an incredible story, writing and characters.

Fallout 4 had awesome gun gameplay and world. Settlement building was also cool.

Fallout 76 is fun to play with other people and is actually pretty good now. The world is massive with lots of unique enemies.

Everyone has a preference of course but they're all good games and have something for everybody. I think any Fallout is better than no Fallout and I look forward to whatever comes out next.

The Brotherhood of Steel are without question, the strongest faction in Fallout 4.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 07:46 PM PDT

The Brotherhood of steel could easily annihilate any rival faction in Fallout 4, it wouldn't even be a contest for them. Institute, railroad, Minutemen, none can even come close to rivalling the Brotherhood. Destroying a faction as unfathomably powerful as the BOS shouldn't even be a realistic option in FO4.

Why? Simple, the Brotherhood have an infinite supply of manpower and resources. How else do you explain their fucking vertibird Kamikaze bombings which seem to take place every 5 mins. Like where do these fuckers come from? You've been to Boston Airport right? I saw maybe three vertibirds, and yet you'd think the BOS grows these machines like mutfruit.

The Brotherhood has more vertibirds and pilots, than Preston has settlements to mark on my map. You just can't win against those odds, no one can. You fucking lose. Ad Victoriam.

Things a Mr. Handy can do.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 10:21 AM PDT

    The always helpful Mister Handy is a line of Robots created by the General Atomics Corporation. They are easily identified by their Light bulb-shaped Bodies, three Eye Stalks and three Handy Tools, but don't confuse them for the Military Variant known as Mister Gutsy. The Mister Handy has a wide array of different arms for various tasks and they are interchangeable depending on the task. The arms snap and lock onto the chassis with such ease that even the Mister Hndy could do it. Here's a few things they can do;

    1. A Flame Nozzle. It always preplexed me why Miter Handies have "Flamethrowers" when I realized, they're not flamethrowers at all, but lighters with adjustable nozzles. They were used to light Cigarettes, Candles, Fireplaces, Grills and anything else that needed a small frame. After the war, the Nozzles eventually wore down and broke giving them the "Flamethrower" we see in the Wasteland.

    2. Child and Pet care. Mr. Handies come with a large database on the expertise of child and pet care. Though this was never meant to replace parents completely, they were more intended to give Mom and Dad a break every once in a while. Still, this didn't stop most neglectful parents from making the Robot raise the child itself. It could also walk the Dog, change the Kitty Litter and feed the Goldfish and advise the owner to ditch the bowl in favor of a tank.

    3. Shopping. Give the Robot a List and some Cash and it'll hover on down to the Store to pick up the requested items. If it is discovered the Robot doesn't possess enough cash, it'll rank every item on the list from most to least important and whatever is least important goes back on the shelves.

    4. Home defense. While not a Combat Robot like its cousin, the Mr. Handy can come to defense when needed. If it spots an Intruder in the House, it will demand they explain themselves. If the explanation is unsatisfactory or the owners tell it they don't know the person, the Mr. Handy will simply escort the trespasser off the property. If they are apprehended again, the Mr. handy may hold them in place while contacting authorities.

    5. Cooking. A Mr. Handy can transform an ordinary Kitchen to a private 5-Star Restaurant. Whether it be an ordinary box of Sugar Bombs or Beef Wellington, any meal prepared by the Mr. Handy won't be forgotten anytime soon.

    6. Repairs. Having origins in Construction and Maintenance, it's no surprise that the Mister Handy is very "Handy". With its wide array of tools and optional addons, the sky's the limit on what the Mister Handy can make or repair*
*as long as it complies with General Atomics standards on repair and crafting.

    7. Drink Mixing. For those who've had a long day, the Mister Handy can mix a verity of drinks that'll knock your socks off!

    8. Farming and Gardening. With the Mr. Handy in the dirt, your plants will be the envy of the block. At least until another person gets their own Mr. Handy.

    9. The Mr. Handy comes with an internal radio, though this isn't heard in-game.

    10. Translate languages in real time. Things Mr. Handy cannot do:

    11. The Mr. Handy will refuse any orders to steal, but someone with the technical know how could bypass this little annoyance. Though this would void the warranty and the owner could face Prison Time because of it and their Mr. Handy will be confiscated, repaired and resold.

    12. The Mr. Gutsy attachments are built to be incompatible with the Mr. Handy, but tech savvy people would find a bypass. Of course, this would void the warrant and may cause a visit from some not so happy Army guys.

    13. The Mr. Handy, at least in Pre-War times, would always avoid murdering people. Yes, someone could bypass it and yes, they would be responsible for whatever the robot does.

    14. Own property. They just can't, even if you tell them to.

Is there anything I missed and what did you think of this? Some of these are personal headcanons of mine, but could realistically be things a Mr. Handy could do.

Holy fuck is Fallout ripe for remakes

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 11:20 PM PDT

I mean, of all series out there.

Fallout 1 and 2 have great stories and a ton of options sitting behind an arcane and archaic UI no average player would want to go near out of fear of contamination and a battle system that makes D&D's THACO system look sane; yet behind that intimidating wall is gold.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas have serious tech deficits that were felt even back on release and a ho-hum battle system that 4 showed could've been great; but behind that is a great translation of Fallout into a fully 3d first/3rd person environment.

I know, new games are great. And yes, Obsidian and Fallout are now owned by the same company. And yes, Obsidian even confirmed it has "3" projects under development while only 2 non fallout ones have been announced (...). But even with that, and as someone with little interest in say, Crysis Remastered or Mass Effect Legendary Edition, I'd be very interested in remakes of these 4 games (that weren't left to fan projects, bless them, that easily may never see completion). Microsoft certainly has the cash, probably spare and ready to go in some bank account only a computer even remembers is there. So the opportunity seems to be right in front of them, if only they'd take it.

I'm almost certain I'm on the right sub for this to be a shared sentiment, aye?

How exactly are the Enclave not the bad guys?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 11:35 AM PDT

Throughout fallout 2, 3, and even in New Vegas the enclave are treated as the bad guy. And No matter how much research I've done on them, I simply can't find a single good thing they've done. And yet Fallout 76 and a lot of fallout fans treat them like the BOS (a faction with good intentions, but often less than desirable actions) can anyone explain?

While trying to make a charismatic character, I remember now why I love charisma in Fallout.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 05:52 PM PDT

Minor spoilers for one of the first encounters in the game.

Playing Fallout 4 again after a hiatus, and used a character build called the Detective from Fudgemuppet, a YouTuber, and pretty good build maker for anyone interested.

The build came with a Charisma of 10. The first thing I did was come across Wolfgang, after buying a Formal hat from Trashcan Carla, which gives +1 to Charisma, and basically mugged him, and told him to buzz off.

What makes this better is I usually don't customize the Lone Survivor all that much, but I tinkered around and chose a set of eyes I thought looked alright.

For some reason, every time I do a speech check, he squints, and it's just hilarious because he looks like he just woke up, and can't be bothered to care enough to get violent.

So that whole scene was like some guy who just woke up, and was trying to get some coffee from the diner, and told the people robbing it to buzz off, after taking their money to pay for his coffee for bothering him.

How powerful could the Institute get?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 10:36 PM PDT

In Fallout 4, we see that a lot of the Institute is basically making fake children and gorillas, and kidnapping people and using them for experimentation on the Earth's surface.

Say the Institute mobilized itself for war and expansion and started putting all of it's effort towards expanding their influence. How powerful could they get in the long run after the Sole Survivor sides with them?

Mr House has not aged well

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 01:23 AM PDT

Not simply in terms of being stuck in an fridge (lol) but as a character.

I appreciate that when the game was made he was a throwback to the 'visionary millionaires' of the early 20th century, but these days he just sounds like Elon Musk.

And given Musk's track record of getting into space it makes House's claims of putting people in space sound like the grandiose boasting of someone whose rockets will explode at launch, rather than the promise of a better future.

And I doubt it going to get better any time soon, given the continuing idiocy of billionaires IRL.

    TL;DR Eat the Rich.

    Recommend a Good RPG Series

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 01:23 AM PDT

I'm not much of a gamer these days but recently finished Fallout 3 and New Vegas and have caught the bug again.

I want to pick up a new RPG series to keep me busy, what would you good folks recommend?

My Googling has steered me towards: - The Witcher 3 - Mass Effect (Remastered) - Dark Souls (Remastered) - Skyrim

I know nothing about any of these games so I have an open mind. And before people ask, I tried Fallout 4 but wasn't much of a fan.
