    Simple house rules

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 02:19 PM PDT

Fallout 3 was my first Fallout game and I love it still. But it can sometimes be difficult to go back, especially since I also love Survival mode in Fallout 4. Suddenly all the weightless ammo and chems and instant-effect Stimpaks in FO3 seem like too much of a gift.

While mods can work to increase the challenge (and I've used mods, notably FWE), when you just want the simplicity of vanilla, a few house rules can help.

Here's a simple set I've been toying with:

    1. If you want to use chems in combat, they have to be hotkeyed.

    2. Only carry weapons that are hotkeyed (and extras of those weapons, for repair purposes).

    3. Only carry ammo for hotkeyed weapons.

That may not seem too restrictive, but you suddenly find yourself facing difficult choices when you come across relatively rare ammo or low-condition guns that you want to tote around to repair when you find another one. Here's my current loadout as an example:

    1: Axe

    2: Silenced 10mm

    3: Hunting Rifle

    4: Frag Grenades

    5: Bottlecap Mines

    6: Laser Rifle

    7: Double-barrel Shotgun

    8: Stimpaks

As you may be able to tell, I'm at a fairly low level in Point Lookout, and I'll need to toss some things soon.

I'm fairly early into this houserule set, but I'm thinking it's simple enough. Some house rules feel a bit too "artificial" and play against some of the natural mechanics of the game. But I hope this one will keep me feeling the struggle a bit longer, as I'll need to choose carefully what I keep.

How many super mutants do you estimate there are in D.C, before the lone wanderer kills any?

Muties are practically everywhere in the dc area. I even found some in a thrift store! Along with a couple in the metro stations, and i want to hear your guy's guesses at the number of super mutants in Washington.
