    General thoughts on Vault 81

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 06:09 PM PDT

The following is a copied and pasted draft post I'm working on to discuss Vault 81 (the only other known Vault in the Commonwealth where you first meet Curie and cure Austyn after he's bit by a mole rat) and share it on Instagram. No need to read the entire thing.

,The story behind Vault 81 is like that of a political thriller, choosing which lives are important to save in the time of crisis. Given that the number is lower than the one the Sole Survivor comes from (Vault 111), then it likely indicates Vault 81 was designed first.

To start things off, every person admitted into a Vault-Tec developed vault is treated with the highest priority. Vault-Tec has not only developed vaults out of protecting their constituents but also creating the means of researching them. Our story in Vault 111 involves the cryogenic sleep for the Vault Dwellers for (reason) but ends up in the path of the Leader of the Institute, Father, who captures the baby Shaun in order to create the Synths. The head writer for Fallout 4 described his childhood boogeyman being James "Whitey" Bulgar, the Irish Mob boss in Boston during the 1980s, and used that persona to adapt the Institute in Fallout 4, after having given players a sneak peek to the Commonwealth in Fallout 3 with the quest "The Replicated Man". As we've seen Hanson get his memory wiped with a specific recall code given by Dr Zimmer in Fallout 3, that gives us a solid introduction to the reputation of the Institute in Fallout 4. The Institute is known to kidnap select people in the Commonwealth, disintegrating their physical bodies, making replicas of their mind and bodies in Synths that completely resembles what they used to be, and release them in the Commonwealth in an attempt to have a better version of humanity. As the Institute saying goes, "Humanity Reborn" (verify). A number of things come into what the reason is behind this heinous act of robbing people of their souls. WIth backing of companies like RobCo and Vault-Tec, mighty corporations in the Fallout universe before the war made efforts to provide humanity upstanding livelihoods. With the oncoming nuclear war that happened between the U.S and China, companies used their R&D powers to prepare and remain involved with humanity after the crisis. Being involved as a corporation is very off-putting to us regular folk just looking to survive. For Vault-Tec to be dedicated to their residents to the point of becoming test subjects is like having Craster from "Game of Thrones" impregnates his daughters to have more daughters but leaves a newborn son in the wilderness for the ice people to convert him into their army. It's a haunting move, especially since Vault Tec has remained unannounced after the bombs fell despite claiming they will take over experimental procedures for Vault residents like in Vault 111.

Vault 111's focus was to set up a cryogenic research facility for residents coming in from Sanctuary Hills and Concord. After having signed up as Vault residents, they will be hurried to the Vault once the alert of nuclear bombings arrive. As the playthrough of Fallout 4 formally goes, the military is heavily present out and inside the Vault. There's a offputting welcome from research staff and security personnel, but we follow the doctor in charge as Overseer to the cryopods. The cryopods appear as massive refrigerators with inner linings made out for a person to fit in at an incline. We're given the option to listen in to how our neighbors are feeling, a couple mentioned their daughter "down in D.C", which is a reference to the main location in Fallout 3 as we are in Boston, MA. After being left in the cryopods, we then receive a cinematic of how our story and character motivations begin. Our spouse is killed and baby Shaun is kidnapped by a mysterious figure who gave the orders to open the cryopod, risking the lives of the other residents. (SPOILER ALERT) It is then revealed that the Institute gave the order for Shaun to be kidnapped since he has not been exposed to the radiation of the bombs so that he can have his DNA used to create the Synths that resemble humanity while serving as the head of the Institute.

The Vault 111 residents were meant to be an experiment of what happens to humans after experiencing suspended animation through cryogenic sleep. After entering the Vault, any resident who made any attempt to escape were ordered to be put to death after cooperating residents have entered their cryopods. Under no circumstances was their suspension to be interrupted, even if one may suddenly wake up experiencing life support failure. Despite Vault-Tec's demands of taking over matters of the residents once they announced an "All-Clear" signal that never came, everyone that walked into the Vault has been declared 'expendable'. To sum it up, the Vault residents have signed their death warrants upon entering the Vault.

Vault 111 is the result of an overpowering corporation being responsible for innocent lives lost, except for that of the Sole Survivor. When learning about Vault 81, we see that it is possible for more than one person, a community of people, is able to overcome the sinister acts of corporate regulations. The research performed on the residents of Vault 81 was to observe how a community acts when a disease is present among them. This involves what political ideals are present, how the Overseer leads with those ideals, how the doctors among the residents will work to create a cure for any disease posed on the residents and the medicines needed to maintain the health of the residents.

The Vault 81 science team consisted of 3 people and an advanced robot, since more researchers were apparently unable to make it to the Vault in time, and worked in secret by using the ventilation system to release controlled diseases by trials. The formation of these diseases were part of experimenting with mole rats, along with centuries of supplies needed to conduct the research required by Vault-Tec. With the good intentions of the researchers and the moral grounds of the Overseer, neither side really saw eye to eye while keeping the residents in the dark. Instead of Overseer Olivette sticking with the Vault Tec orders to allow the researchers to infect the residents, she intervened with the piping system where the diseases were released and had the nozzles clogged to allow the pipes to burst where the science team was located.

Given the end result, Vault 81 continued to run for 200 years with roles being passed down to the growing offspring. Thanks to Overseer Olivette, the Vault has been serving its purpose as a shelter for those trying to avoid the harmful radiation from atomic destruction Then one can't help but wonder; is this a win for the residents for not being subject to Vault-Tec's experimentation or is this a win for Vault-Tec since Vault 81, no matter how rundown the residents claim it is, has run as strong as it's been manufactured.

Why are there so many super mutants in fallout 4?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 02:47 PM PDT

I can understand why they would exist in such abundance in fo76. But why are they so abundant in Boston after so many years of vault 87 being out of aerosolized FEV? These are either new dumb mutants created by the institute for research which begs the question how and why in the fuck would they make so many or these are old vault 87 mutants that are still looking for "green stuff" but just decided Boston was a great place to occupy en mass for no reason? How are so many still alive at this point if there's no more FEV after the brotherhood war?

The difference between Rangers and 1st Recon, i guess? Read below

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 10:45 AM PDT

So when Caesar states why they lost the first battle of hoover dam, he says it was because of the Rangers. But whenever i see rangers in game, sometimes even the veteran rangers, they are not performing duties that denotes these things. It's more that Ranger is a rank, as they seem to have command over outposts. My question is: What is the difference between 1st Recon and Rangers? Are Rangers members of 1st recon, or are 1st Recon members of the Rangers? Is it like in the US Army in current times, in that you can go to Ranger school, get the Ranger title and tab (patch for uniform), but only a few are in the actual "Ranger" unit?
