Posted: 02 Jul 2020 11:52 AM PDT Disclaimer: This post is a theory backed up by lore and in-game observations. The Institute, the boogeyman of the Commonwealth was responsible for kidnapping wastelands and replacing them with a synthetic doppelganger for infiltration purposes. Although we see how a synth is created, we never actually get to see how they come to possess the memories and personality of a person they intend on replacing. By looking through the lore, the technology of the Institute, and in-game events it has become apparent that the Institute has been capable of injecting an existing human consciousness into a synthetic body. Nick Valentine who was a border between a Gen 2 Synth and Gen 3 tested the reaches of Synth's ability to learn. Using the brain mapping data collected pre-war the Synth who would eventually be known as Nick Valentine, the Institute endowed it with all the memories, emotions, and personality of a long-dead human. The test was a success but with several problems as well. First off, the personality implanted on the Synth would reject its artificial body due to the uncanny valley. In short, the newly reborn person could tell that the body that they inhabited was far from human. The results of this experiment were proof of the concept that the Institute needed to continue their research. As the third generation synth was created, the research collected by the prototype synths was applied to the new models of synth. Using what they knew and the ability to teleport, the practice of kidnapping humans and extracting memories became one of the easiest ways to gain intelligence on a wasteland that was openly cautious of them. When a person would be kidnapped, their brain would be mapped by Institute scientists and then downloaded onto their synthetic doppelganger. The original human would be released without any knowledge of what happened however this tactic proved troublesome as it left the variable of the Synth meeting the original. Much like any problem faced by a professional mathematician, they simplify their problem, from that point on, all kidnapped wastelanders would be euthanized after their usefulness had run out. The promise of the Gen-3 Synth project one question was brought forward and that was "could we theoretically be immortal through brain mapping and our synths". Conrad Kellogg was the first test of this contingency. His hippocampus implant provided by the institute allowed his memories and personality to be easily transferred to a digital format. In-game, the implant was never exactly explained other than it harbored Kellogg's memories. It raised the question as to why a mercenary would consent to an implant that does not necessarily improve his combat performance unless there was another perk involved. That perk was the promise of immortality through Synth bodies. Canonically speaking, Kellogg is 108 years old and although he claims that the Institute was responsible for prolonging his life, it is very plausible that the Institute "fixed" him by giving him a superior synth body. On death, he drops the implant rather than a synth component. This is because unlike other synths who were programmed by the institute, Kellogg was allowed to keep his original memories free from programming by the institute. With all this in mind, why didn't the Institute director Father opt for such a program? The answer is somewhat simple, he always planned for the Sole Survivor to be his successor at the Institute. On top of that, Father personally disapproved of the augmentations to Kellogg stating that the purpose of the Institute is to save humanity not turn them into cyborgs. If the player does not choose to side the Institute, then Father still does not opt into the program. In the end, the Institute was capable of transferring human consciousness into synths as they have first dabbled with Nick Valentine and preformed with Kellogg. Through the institute, people could achieve near-immortality by implanting memories on blank slate synths. It was only because of Father's interference that the project did not expand beyond the purposes of creating synth infiltrators. [link] [comments] |

Why does the Brotherhood in Fallout 4 think synths are such a threat to humanity? Posted: 02 Jul 2020 07:43 PM PDT In Maxson's speech when you first meet him he claims that the synths are "a weapon that transcends the destructive nature of the atom bomb." He goes on to say that all synths should be destroyed. The institute is dangerous because they've caused all sorts of problems for the Commonwealth but I don't see how synths on their own are a big enough threat to wipe out humanity. With the exception of coursers synths are basically just normal people. Escaped synths either have had their memories wiped or want nothing to do with the institute. The only synths I could see being a threat are the ones sent to replace people but as far as I know there aren't very many of those. After the institute is destroyed no new synths can be made and the remaining ones don't seem to pose much of a threat so why does the Brotherhood think every synth has to be destroyed? Posted: 03 Jul 2020 12:18 AM PDT I mean, since they are basically human aside from that chip, do they become older, or do they stay the same for their entire Life? [link] [comments] |
