Some interesting math on the population of post-war Massachusetts, and America

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 03:41 PM PST

    • According to the Fallout Bible 0, the U.S. population was around 400 million in 2077.
    • The U.S. population in 2018 was around 327 million.
    • If we go by the 400 million number for 2077, that means the U.S. pop multiplied by 1.22 between 2018 and 2077.
    • This would mean California's population, which was 39,557,045 in 2018, would be around 48,358,245 in 2077.
    • From what we are told about the NCR's population in Fo2, the Fallout bible, and expected growth between Fo2 and NV, they can honestly have no more then 2-3 million people in the NCR.
    • This means that, even 200+ years after the war, the NCR's population is only 1/24th - 1/16h what is was pre-war.
    • The state of Massachusetts has a population of 6,969,420 in 2018.
    • By this same measure it should have a population of around 8,502,692 in 2077.
    • Even if we assume it had the same population increase after the great war, there should only be about 354,278 - 531,418 people in the state by the time of Fallout 4.
    • However, since the NCR's population is only due to the security, development, and medical care, that stems from a somewhat organized nation, the population increase outside of the NCR should only be about half, since those areas lack such safety/medical care.
    • This means there should really only be around 177,139 - 265,709 people in the whole state by the time of Fallout 4.
    • Around 48% of that would be in the Commonwealth in-game area proper, so around 88,569 - 132,854 people in the in-game Commonwealth area
    • For the entirety of post-war America, minus California, there is likely around 7.3 - 11 million people.

If cars are nuclear powered, why are there still gas stations?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 01:42 AM PST

Never really thought about this until it was mentioned in the intro for fallout 4 but if cars in the fallout universe were nuclear powered why would they need to be refuelled? Nuclear powered vehicles that exist in our own world don't need to be refuelled for years.

The only thing I thought it could be was that the "gas stations" actually just pumped water, since the little reactor would still need to be cooled constantly.

Started Playing FO3 (XB1) My Thoughts So Far

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 04:53 PM PST

I am actually terrified of raiders now because I never know if one of them is wielding a rocket launcher like the lunatics they are!

I may of blown myself up a time or two with frags.

    Ammo is scarce as well.

All in all fun so far! Would totes recommend this to other folks.

I never realized how great Fallout 4 is. Just hear me out

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 12:01 AM PST

The immersion into the world is great. Coupled with mods, I'm going to sink days into this game. The NPC's interacting with others (Nick Valentine running into a person he saved a few years ago, saying hi before we left Diamond City) or how companions will take a seat or relax if I'm doing shopping in a building. Everything feels so alive in the world. What do you think?

Was told fallout 4 is the worst fallout but I’m really enjoying it so far

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 10:21 AM PST

I played new Vegas before this and yeah I can agree the main story line isn't as good but holy fuck it's WAY more fun to explore. Side quests like the USS constitution, silver shroud, and fort strong are some of my favorites. The best part about a vocal protagonist is that being a sarcastic asshole makes this game 3x as fun. the line that always gets me is "I'm here to pick up an order. Two large pepperoni and a calzone. Name is, fuck you". Which is made even better if you run in guns blazing and accidentally bump into the guy, entering his dialogue. Settlements are strangely addictive to build. Using vertibirds while playing fortunate son has probably been done to hell but it never gets old for me. There's a ridiculous amount of songs that can go with your character walking backwards in power armor. You can cosplay agent 47 viably with the deliverer and armored along with the right face sliders.

My only complaint is not being able to do something about kids blocking doors. Idk why but it happens to me way too much. It sucks that I can't just kick the fucker.

Favorite New Feature in Fallout 4?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 04:50 PM PST

Not a bash thread or critique of Fallout 4 or Bethesda. For those who played earlier Fallout games before 4, what's one new feature you really loved?

I love what F4 did to feral ghouls. Sprinting, leaping, crawling and all the different kinds of ghouls was a huge upgrade from New Vegas.

What are some new tribes and small factions you would introduce?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 02:06 AM PST

What are some unique small tribes and factions you would like to see introduced; factions such as Powder Gangers, Boomers, Vipers, Khans or Rust Devils ect all hae such a unique style andd history to them.

I'd like to see a Tribe focused on Ice Hockey introduced that would be based in Canada, they could wield hockey sticks/ pucks and wear salvaged hockey gear, they could use the various frozen lakes as hunting/ raiding grounds.

    Would this be considered cheating?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 02:05 AM PST

So recently i decided to make a new save on fo4 and play it from the start, after not playing it for a few months. I only have 3 mods on, the p99 pistol (40 damage), which is just found by vault 111, a mk14 EBR (marksman/assault rifle) erich deals 99 damage, which is found at certain locations and an anti tank rifle that does 150 that spawns on enemies. Would these be considered overpowered? they're useful when coming up against powerful enemies but you're probably supposed to struggle etc. also would it also be considered cheating if i used a cheat holotape but only for ammo, not guns or caps.

I know it doesn't really matter i just wondered what more devoted fans would think.

    Sniper Weapons in Fallout 4

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 12:53 AM PST

I made a sneak Sniper and am addicted. But I am having trouble figuring out what to look for.

In my general "please help me make a sniper" thread a few days ago, people suggested skills to raise and it works. But it kinda feels weaponry is a whole other ballgame.

I am currently sporting the Overseer's Guardian modified into a sniper rifle. The gentleman who helped me the other day suggested buying the Legendary Gauss from Ronnie Shaw at the Castle, it does 50% more damage to limbs, but I am not to the Castle yet.

What should I look for in rifles as endgame gear, in general? Am I looking strictly for Gauss to replace the Overseer's? VATS enhanced? Two shot? I got a Rapid Hardened Sniper rifle today, I don't know if that's any good.

I know one would think raw damage would suggest what's best, but I've read there's weird mechanics behind some of the Legendary prefixes such as Two Shot one bullet gets affected by your stuff but the second bullet doesn't. I am having a blast at Snipering, but the gear is getting funky.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

cant get into fo3 cause im scared.

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 04:07 AM PST

call me a pussy but i hate horror games and any horror related things in other games, i dont like when you're sent under ground for a quest and a ghoul comes screeching from pitch black or you get jumpscared by mutants.

i just wanted to relax cause i assumed this game was basically skyrim since it was made by the same people, thought it would be just exploring and questing, skyrim dungeons arent as scary as fallout (fuck oblivion tho, i cant play that one also cause im scared) , which is the reason im playing fnv now, mostly no creepy underground atmosphere and jumpscare bullshit.

    Fallout 3 on Steam

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 09:46 PM PST

I just bought Fallout 3 during autumn sale recently, and I've recently found the time to start playing. However, there is an issue with the game where a screen would pop up, I would press play, and then the game closes and nothing happens. How do I fix this? I know people have grown used to Bethesda's shortcomings but this is a first for me.

Is there any hope for the Fallout franchise? (Rant.. will probably delete)

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 03:24 AM PST

Rant because i dont know what else to do with this information at this time of day.

So I'm lying in bed reading about Fawkes, for reasons that will stay my own, and I learned that Fawkes might have been born a woman, according to some terminal entries (which seems like it could have been interesting but of lore, and like, why not?) It seemed like a tidbit that fit in line with either the theme of horrible science scarring innocent people, and one person's way to move on from that... or it could have been an allusion to the themes of identity and self-image that Fawkes' character already has going for him.

But then I saw (from a referenced dead link) that writer Emil Pagliarulo, lead writer of Fallout 3, refuted this detail with some harshness. With some form on insistency that this was not true. The link to what he said exactly was dead, but it got me thinking about who this man was to be so callous about such a detail as a character's gender. After all it's not like its important to the writing if Fawkes was a woman at some point or not. That doesn't change the plot, or the story beats pr what have you. But if it matters to the lead writer of the game, then I wondered, what else matters to him?

So I looked into and hoo boy if there was anyone to blame for the writing quality of Fallout 4 and 76, this guy right here fits the bill. The Fawkes bit really just lead me down this rabbit hole for this sea of information about this guy who holds lead writing credentials on this game, Skyrim, Fallout 4, and the tragedy that is 76. I don't know what happened to this guy since Fallout 3 but suffice to say his head is so far up his own ass that he could circle back around to the mouth. If you want to become depressed instantly (like I have) about the man who holds the position of "Lead Writer" on your favorite franchise, then read some of his musings about his writing or listen to his GDC ramblings. Looking for a friend to share my pain... with this man in charge I don't know if I have any hope for good writing choices in a Fallout game ever again. Send tweet.

    Fallout 5 Ideas for Plot/Gameplay/Setting

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 12:54 PM PST

These thread are nothing new but I like to hear ideas from the community.

    I'll start:

    New York

The protagonist (the Voyager) is a sailor on leave in NYC. You are introduced to the pre-war society that is both wealthy and struggling to meet its needs. You walk around a street and see the city learning the controls and how to interact with the environment, then the Armed Forces send out an alert that all personnel are to report to their posts immediately. Next a cinematic plays narrated by Ron Perlman about the Great War and the Voyager's time at sea when the nuclear sub you are stationed on sails to the Pacific and unleashes its payload on China. You get to see the reactions of the crew as they unleash nukes and take catastrophic damage from enemy ships. The sub sails to a Naval base in the Arctic where you get an introduction to combat mechanics against a band of deserters calling themselves the Yetis. The crew repairs the sub after many months of scrounging to return to their post in NYC. They find that in the 11 months that have passed the city has become irradiated and chaotic with no central government. There are very few settlements and most people who live outside of those settlements. Even good people turn into-pseudo raiders to survive while the The Naval base is still operational and all of the members of the crew are sent out to do reconnaissance; however, the commanding officer makes the mistake of sending them out individually so when you come back to the base most of your friends have perished. The Voyager learns that the city has safeguards designed to eliminate radiation and provide water after the blast. The CO orders that the remaining sailors work to make jumpstart the safeguards using the sub's nuclear engine, but this attempt fails. It is realized that the entire city cannot be saved and that they must focus their efforts on helping the few that they can. The CO falls ill and promotes the Voyager to lead the effort. The Voyager chooses a settlement to give the power to and becomes the hero of said settlement, leading them in solving their major issues such as eradicating raiders or building themselves up. Morality is less of a theme and necessity is more emphasized. Different factions have little ideology, just different needs and suggested solutions as opposed to FNV and Fallout 4. Locations includes the Hamptons where lush lawns have been turned into farms that are impeded by occasional radioactive snow storms and the Bronx which is an irradiated hellhole full of Ghouls.

    Texas

The protagonist (the Lone Star) is a slave owned by the Legion about 20 years post the events of New Vegas. Edward Sallow's passing and loss at Hoover Dam confused the Legion. Tunnelers ruin the West coast, inhibiting further expansion. They retreat and hold on to what they own, adopting a new republican structure and modifying their ideology. The game begins with an intro explaining the events and you learning the game by carrying out tasks on an estate. A figure like a cross between Spartcaus and Harriet Tubman liberates the Lone Star and trains them in combat. You can choose between betraying the leader and earning a spot in the Legion or fighting against the slavers. The society under the Legion is simple and brutal with people living safely, but oppressed. Legion-controlled areas are safe while raider gangs do still exist in the desolate areas, making occasional attacks. Both factions provide functional governments, but the integrity of the leaders is up to question.

Just a FYI for those thinking about buying the Fallout 4 "Virtual Workshops" in the Creation Club, or for those the bought it, but have not tried it yet.

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 01:24 PM PST

    https://fallout.bethesda.net/en/article/5TeFmYz4iScthRatXCOD3J/fallout-4-virtual-workshops-guide

    • Crafting does not require any resources. As such, scrapping objects will not return any resources either.
    • Perk-dependent workshop items still require the necessary perk(s) to be crafted
    • You and your companions will be invulnerable to damage while in VR Workshops
    • Settlers are not summoned using radio beacons but are "generated" instantly using the VR Workshop Terminal located at the entry of each VR Workshop. Simply select Generate Settler to have one materialize nearby. A maximum of 20 can be generated per VR Settlement.
    • Virtual Settlers can be assigned to tasks, but they cannot be traded with or looted
    • Settlement ownership cannot be lost due to low happiness
    • Food and Water will count toward settlement resources but cannot be harvested
    • No excess production of food or water will be stored in the Workshop
    • Normal "real-world" settlers or companions cannot be dismissed to VR Workshops
    • VR Settlers cannot be sent outside of VR Workshops
    • Supply lines cannot be connected to VR Workshops
    • Settler bells and alarms have special variations for VR, located in Creation Club > VR Workshops > Misc
    • Stores and some other miscellaneous items cannot be crafted while inside VR Workshops
    • VR Settlements will not display in the Pip-Boy list of Workshops
    • VR Settlements will not be utilized by the Minutemen Radiant Quests
    • VR Settlements will not be attacked like normal settlements
    • While an unlimited number of Attack Markers can be placed, only 30 will be functional at a given time. These 30 are chosen at random when Attack Mode is initiated.
    • Enemies spawned in Attack Mode cannot be pickpocketed or looted after killed

This will be about 10 minutes of fun, then quickly forgotten in the annals of piss-poor-mods.

I made F4 into Escape from tarkov

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 01:06 PM PST

Does anyone else do this? I've modded fallout 4 to basically be escape from tarkov using these mods:

    • Modern firearms

    • Deadly commonwealth (Overhauls all enemy factions with huge variety/numbers and difficulty)

    • Combat Stalkers (Enemy factions will randomly spawn a distance away and will track you, even indoors)

    • Courser crusher (Coursers are now teleporting, invisible stalking terminators they should have been)

    • Militarized minutemen

    • Private military company (for gear missing from militarized minutemen)

    • Darker nights

    • Pip boy flashlight

    • West tek NVG's

    • Audio mod replacing ambient and combat music with metal and other video game music.

    • Better shooting sound

    • Realistic explosion audio (for dat tinnitus)

The high damage from modern firearms on survival mode makes nearly everyone (Including you) die in 1-3 shots, save for exotic enemies like juggernauts or commandos.

Gunfights are heartpounding, require real use of planning and you'll always be outnumbered and overwhelmed. Gun customization rivals tarkov, and the pitch black nights paired with the deadly monsters that roam them make the wasteland a real nightmare.

My thoughts about why the aliens were interested in the nuclear launch codes.

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 10:03 PM PST

We all know that aliens exist in Fallout. Mothership Zeta really expanded upon them by having it known they have observed the planet Earth for years in orbit. They are clearly doing some type of research.

In Mothership Zeta, it is revealed that the aliens extracted the launch codes from a government official. Many assumed that it means the aliens caused the Great War. Instead, I propose they didn't but likely thought of it.

Imagine you see a planet on the brink of all out nuclear war. You studied a planet for years and maybe the Great Filter is common on many worlds. Self-destruction is expected but maybe the aliens wanted to be prepared in case humanity didn't go forward with destroying themselves. Humanity would likely survive long enough for interstellar travel and the aliens likely don't want that. Maybe they see the exploration of the Universe their privilege that no other world should have.

Also, the aliens could be curious for how humanity and the other lifeforms present on Earth would fair in a more hostile world ravaged by radiation.

Overall, I don't think the aliens caused the Great War but were likely interested in causing it for research purposes.

Melee character builds, what are your thoughts and tips

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 05:20 PM PST

I am all about melee gameplay when it comes to Fallout. I've played 3, FNV, 4, & 76 primarily (1&2 not nearly as much as much)

I'm interested in how much folks are into melee gameplay, what their weapon of choice is, and what sorts of perks they have picked for these characters.
